I've used SCT tuners in the past but I'm not familiar with Superchips. If I got one - where would I get the tune?

I'm not experienced enough to change the parameters myself.

It comes ready to go with performance tunes in 87,91, and 93 octane. You get free updates downloading with their "downloader", which is how you get the CAI tunes.

do you need a laptop to get the updates ?

SC tuners need an internet connection to download updates. A laptop and/or desktop will work.

You install a "Downloader" icon onto your desktop, double click, and the tuner automatically updates. Unplug once finished, and then off to tune your car :)

It's money well spent. It wakes up the L76 quite nicely, plus you get all sorts of options to customize things to your liking. For most of us who don't do major mods (just CAI, exhaust, etc.) its a good thing to have. Your mods you already have are more of a warranty issue than the Cortex IMO as you can set it back to stock whenever you need to take it to the dealer. In fact, you must do this, because if they happen to re flash the ECM it won't match what you have stored in the Cortex as stock.

Thanks guys! My head is slowing being removed!! I always assume the wrost, i.e. im going to be stuck with a 4000 lbs paper weight that I pay for every month when the motor blows up and GM wont fix it!

Mier
12-15-2009, 04:58 PM
I was the same way. I was reluctant especially after buying the extended warranty but I think as long as I don't render it so screwed that the computer won't come up then I can at least flash it back to stock.

It's currently sitting in my trunk updated and waiting for the rotofab to get here on Thursday. After that's installed I'll install the tune and see how well it does. I'm trying to temper my expectations by keeping them low but, I'm hoping to be blown away.

Your right, Im thinking that if I just keep the tunner in my car at all times, I can flash it back to stock if need by, i.e. something goes wrong while on the road and it needs to be towed to a dealership.

Yes. I started with the Cortex and it made definite improvements without anything else having been done to the car. They also have CAI specific tunes now that squeeze out some additional HP when combined with the CAI, as opposed to just their normal tune with a CAI.

I would absolutely purchase this as a first mod. The transmission files alone make this worth the price. The Roto will give you close to the same HP/TQ numbers, but it won't help with the crappy torque management.

Someone asked what kind of power gains you will get with the SC. I'm thinking maybe 20HP? Whatever the number is, the REAL benefit to the tuner is being able to reduce the amount of torque management the factory tune has. That, and if you use the higher octane tune you will feel much better throttle response. IMHO, the 93 tune is a little too touchy off the line for me. I run the 91 octane tune. Kinda like the 3 bears LOL, the one in the middle is just right for me!

I also like the other features the Cortex has such as the diagnostics and the timers. I don't know how accurate they are, but if you lay down some base numbers before you tune they will show your gains pretty clearly. I especially like the 0-60 timer and the ability to read any engine codes that could pop up on my car. I need to get out on the interstate late at night and try the 1/4 mile timer out :driving:

We price match based on the situatation. Basically, we have a great reputation, and great customer service. If there is a legitamate place that had a better price we will often match it. However if it some place known for cutting corners, playing games, or providing poor customer service we may not be to. It really boils down to the fact that is costs money to provide good service.

FYI, Superchips is supposed to be reinstating their MVP pricing policy soon, which will result in all authorized dealers having to sell for a set price. This will likely cost everyone more, so you might not want to sit on the fence if your looking to buy.

When does the Cortex 2 year powertrain warranty date start from? Is it when the Cortex is purchased or when it is registered with Superchips? I was thinking about getting one now to beat the price increase but may not want to tune the car for a few months. I do not want to lose months of the 2 year warranty if i can help it

The Cortex does indeed put everything back to stock. I flashed my car back to stock after I got my VMS tune. I asked Kirk to look at my stock files to ensure the Cortex put everything back correctly and he said it was perfect.

I have reflashed my car a couple times for stealership work and they have never said anything. My service writer told met that they are required by GM to take snapshots of the computer to make sure that the warranty work is not something being caused by a tune. I have never had them complain and have always done the work.

Quick question, I know when you get the SC cortex, you take a snapshot of your stock tune and save it, then you can flash with a custom/SC tune, but what happens when you flash it befor ethe dealership then and they may flash it for whatever reason will your stock snapshopt still work if you nee dto restore later on?

I know a couple guys in my local G8 club have a good relationship with the Service Manager where they have taken their G8's a few times. They were told that every time you flash the ECU to tune it or to put it back to stock, it appends to a file in your car's black box that cannot be deleted. He said that the dealership is able to access this file and see how many times you flashed the computer to tune it. I don't personally have my G8 tuned so I have no firsthand knowledge, but this is what I was told.

All I can say is that I never had a problem flashing back to stock. If the dealer picked up on it they never said anything. I feel the Cortex has been doing its job very well.

Just remember to flash it back when you bring it in. They are not going to specifically look for proof of a tune unless you have major failure like motor or tranny.
