You may win your bet. This being April 25th, the '08 LS3 Corvette could be announced anyday. Since the GTO and 'Vette shared the LS2, it makes sense that the LS3 be shipped to Oz.
However the GXP comes out, I am hoping for something like 430 hp.
I even prayed for it last nite before hitting the pillow!! lol!!

TheIncredibleBulk 09-29-2007, 01:38 AM Did anyone else see the new-ish 0-60 mag? I say newish because I bought it a month or two ago. Anyway, if I remember correctly they had Lou Giolatti (sp is way off I know) tear an LS3 down, he was building one for his race car anyways, and give some feedback and he was mightily impressed. I'll try to upload the article when I find the mag. I seem to have misplaced it. D'OH!
TheIncredibleBulk 09-29-2007, 01:56 PM Ok, found the article. They start out by talking about how in 1961 Giotto Bizzarrini, the engineer responsible for the 250 GTO, left Ferrari to build the Prototipi Bizzarrini 5300 GT. Lambo consulted on it, Giugiaro designed it. It was all-Italian except for one thing. A 5.3 liter ( 327, i think) small block Chevy V-8 under the hood. Then they start into the LS3.
"It's just amazing power," says Lou Giglotti, owner of LG Motorsports, who builds and races 'Vettes in the Speed World Challenge GT class. "It's just good crisp clean horses with good rpms 'cause its just a small block, not a 427. And it's got cylinder heads that basically come from the 427 (LS7). It's the same basic design, and it's a really good package."
It goes on to say that Giglotti was one of the first to get their hands on the LS3, which he's developing for racing next season. But even without wholesale race mods, Giglotti likes what he sees.
"I mean, we're already up at 506hp with just a cam and a set of headers," he (Giglotti) says. "We haven't touched the cylinder heads yet."
The LS3 is, in effect, "a small-scale, economical version of the LS7," adds Caleb Newman, the vice president and director of aftermarket operations at Katech Engine Development, which builds the engines for Corvette Racing's Le-Mans winning cars. Newman says that the cylinder heads, intake manifold, rocker arms and high-flow fuel injectors have been taken from the 505 hp 7.0 liter LS7. And the intake and exhaust ports have been increased to LS7 proportions for better flow.
"The bottom end is just 200 cc larger [than the LS2], but the cylinder heads, the manifold, and the engine management system-that's where they got their improvements," says Giglotti.
Like its predecessor, the LS3 will see duty in other vehicles, including the new Camaro and the upcoming RWD Impala SS. Esentially every car based on the Zeta platform- the Pontiac G8, the Caddilac CTS, the Holden Commodore and a reborn Pontiac GTO- will be powered by some form of the LS3. And should the rumors of a 2011 El Camino be true, it will also pack an LS3.
But perhaps the best example of the LS3's potential is car that supposedly doesn't exist, the 700hp force-fed Blue Devil, which General Motors denies its developing.
"If you look at the new manifold in the LS3," says Gigilotti, "the MAP sensor is bolted down. Normally it's just pushed in because there's always vacuum on it. Now [in the LS3] it's bolted down, 'cause I believe it's the same manifold they're gonna use for forced induction." Another clue for Giglotti is the manifold itself.
"It's beefed up and got ribs on it," he says, "and it's much stronger. That's gonna be a turbocharged, supercharged, forced-induction manifold."
They end the article by talking about how GM has taken flak about sticking with pushrod engines and some of the drawbacks inherent with them, but have overcome that with better engineering, materials and manufacturing processess.
So, thoughts anyone?
mmciau 09-29-2007, 04:14 PM "Simple" OHV with good engineering and electronic management of engines can return great horepwer and torque.
You don't need all the extra rotating bits to get good returns.

pinski 10-02-2007, 07:56 AM I agree - everything I know points to the LS3 in the top-of-the-line G8. Now, to reduce competition, I wonder what *else* they'll do to the LS3 when it is placed in the Caddy CTS-V???

S/C maybe? I would guess not as powerful as the Blue Devil, if it materializes, but no more than 500 horsies, considering the old V had 400, the new Z06 has 505, and the new M3 will have 414. Also since rumors of the GXP having 425, I'd say 450, but that is the good old college pull it out your ass guess. lol.

They'll reserve the DI version for the CTS-V. Granted, if you can afford a CTS-V a little gas guzzler tax added on is nothing, except it ought to be GM's goal to produce no cars that require the tax (yet keeping hp and performance up)

Agreed, I think either DI or FI is in the cards for what we'll see in the CTS-V. Many seem to think it will get a slightly detuned version of the powerplant found in the ZR1/Blue Devil.
chiefpontiac 10-05-2007, 08:06 AM Don't forget whatever appears in the C7 will also appear in the XLR.
