: Burning oil?
drglock 05-08-2008, 08:55 AM Hey all,
I picked up my GT last night and of course, had to have a little fun on my drive back home. I was getting into some FOT a couple of times and when I got to a stoplight, i noticed a significant amount of smoke coming from the exhaust. I didnt do any more hard core driving after that and I didnt really notice it again. Thjis morning omw 2 work i was giving it some more WOT and did not notice anything. Of course I am totally paranoid about my new car and I am wondering why I had all that smoke yesterday. Anyone have any ideas? Car seems to be running great, no funny noises, no issues with anything else.
h3llphyre 05-08-2008, 08:56 AM When I first got my car, I had all sorts of funny smells/smoke (barely noticable) when I was driving spirited. It stopped happening pretty quickly. I figured the "prep" buys went crazy with their cleaning supplies and I was just burning it off.
HardEight 05-08-2008, 09:00 AM How many miles are on this car you are performing WOT's on?
Ive been to the tahoe/yukon/escalade plant and you wouldnt believe the burnoff that happens on *some* vehicles when they first are started up and put through the ringer. It usually dissipates after about 10-20 miles though.

Thats kinda what i was thinking. **HardEight - Last night when it happened i had just rolled off the lot and the car had about 10 milles on it. Today it has 40.
HardEight 05-08-2008, 10:06 AM You might want to read the manual before you beat on the car like that. I know there is a big discussion with how to break in a new car, if it should be driven hard or eased in, with good points in both fields. But I had heard that the computer can log your WOT's and if something were to happen, and the dealer checked your log, he might not cover something wrong based on the fact that you ignored the recommended break in procedure in the manual. It could be a long shot, but my warranty is worth a lot to me. So just a heads up.
Even though those WOT accelerations are so much fun :)

They sure are. I would not say i am beating on, just had to give it some juice once or twice. I gave it solid acceleration thru 1 1/2 gears. I asked the guy at the dealership just before I pulled away what I had to do fgor the break in period and he said, nothing. I said "even hard acceleration?" he said "no problem, drive the car the way you want and it will be fine." Anyways, ive been cruising around today with normal driving and the occasional hard acceleration and it seems just fine. No noises, no burnt fluid smell. I am willing to bet that I just got it a little hot and burned off some residual chemical from the cleaning, prep, or whatever was in the exhaust. Trust me, it will be babied, but still driven like it should be ;)
NVR2FST 05-08-2008, 08:38 PM It's the coating on the exhaust burning off...the name of it escapes me right now.
Also, I've never worried about running a car hard right out of the gate. My race car engines look brand new when they come apart after hundreds of passes - so unless you're going for 300k miles I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy!

Musta been whoever they let test drive the car. ;)
