Dylan,

PaycheckG8 and I were polishing our exhaust tips this evening with Adam's Metal Polish and came up with a question based in my experience so far. The polish does a great job but I have to polish them pretty frequently to bring back the shine. Is it appropriate to use a wax or something else to protect the finish longer or is this just the nature of the beast?

Thanks!

Until Dylan sees this, I'll step in. I use Rejex on both my wheels and exhaust tips. It helps the durability a good bit, but remember that unless you never turn on your car, there will be carbon build-up and there is nothing you can do about that. You'll just have to clean them off and polish them every so often. The Rejex though does help make this necessary less often in my experience.

Thanks; I went to the website and they have several different products. Which particular product do you recommend?

I ordered the regular Rejex from their site. When you click on "Buy Online Now" they have a 2 bottle Rejex combo, that's what I ordered.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...

Yeah... its just the nature of the beast, exhaust tips need constant attention to keep them looking decent. No sealant or product on the market (rejex included) is able to withstand the temps seen at the exhaust. Don't get me wrong, I think Rejex is great stuff, but its tolerance for heat is way exceeded by the temps of the exhaust gas after a short drive.

Personally I have a dedicated "exhaust towel" that I have hanging on a hook in the garage that I do a wipe down with every day or 2 just to keep the carbon build up under control. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain kind of approach... or in this case 2 minutes of cleaning is worth a weekend of polishing :D

Keep in mind that the less you let the carbon settle on it the less it will require polishing. If you allow it to sit for long periods of time unchecked then the build up will etch, fade, and discolor the tip.

Damn, that's a great idea about the towel. Particularly because of the last part. Thanks again for passing along another bit of detailing genius, Dylan! ;)

No problem. I just have a crummy old cheap MF, one shot of DS on it and give the tips a quick wipe down... less than a minute of my day and its been a long time since I've had to polish.

How would a dedicated Power Stick work for the exhaust tips?
