I was at the local auto store today getting some floor matts and I saw the K&N filters that also mention they add a bit more horsepower, anyone try them with good results?? (a bit more horsepower)

Depends who you ask.

This usually ends in about a 50/50 argument.

Some swear by the performance.
Some say swear it did absolutely nothing.

Both sides will give track experience, and seat-of-the-pants stories.
Both sides will use dyno results to try to prove their arguement.

If you buy into the idea that a drop in airfilter is worth 40-50 bucks, then buy one. If not don't.

jrc1122 did a good job of summing them up.

I thought about buying one, but I'm worried about over-oiling it and screwing up the MAF sensor.

Yes seems like one extra thing to worry about, without any gauranteed improvement, and since my G8 is Panther Black, its enough work just to keep it as clean and shiny as I like. :wink2:

Put the money towards a cold air intake, you'll see a better improvement with that.

Been wanting to try these myself.

I bought a K&N drop in about a month ago and it works fine for me. I don't drag race, street race or road race this thing so it does what it needs to do. The MPG stayed about the same, the power felt about the same, if it gave me 5hp I couldn't tell. If it gave me more power woopty doo. What it seem to do is gave it better throttle response, that intial acceleration before had some hesitation to it, now it seems alittle better with the drop in. With this dusy enviroment that I live in all I need to do is wash it out and re-oil it.

Be careful when you oil it, they will clog up your mass airflow sensor. I had a K and N drop in panel filter for my Solstice before I got a GMPP CAI. When the Mass Airflow sensor clogged with oil it would act like it was slamming on the brakes when coasting to a stop. So I had to take the MAF out and blast it with MAF cleaner, after that it worked just fine for awhile. Which is one of the reasons I got the GM CAI with a dry filter.

I just picked up an Amsoil dry filter for my CAI on the G8, I have a true flow foam filter that uses a tackier oil on there now. But I just don't want to take any chances with the MAF again.

Best bet is to stick with dry filters, plus I've seen independent tests with the K and N and they don't seem to filter well at all. Just do a search, quite a few sites have tested them.

Here are a few articles for your viewing pleasure:

Here (http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/)

and

Here (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.htm)

I've owned K&N filters on all my cars without any problems, with MAFs, or engine damage. I also pulled apart one of my engines that had a K&N filter it ran just fine, and looked like it was freshly built.

The second artical you posted was pretty good. I like that type of info, but it won't make me stop buying "performance filter" to each their own. It just goes to show paper or not it still alows dirt to flow through some alittle more than others. Any filter will not flow 100% of the dirt and there is a tradeoff for more flow.
Leads me into another thing about filters. Most people who buy these filters have more flow in mind over filtration and I admit I'm one of those people. Until someone comes out that a "performace filter" damaged their engine/reduces engine longevity with viable information. Then the tables would turn to filtration over flow.

I put the K&N filter in at around 2k miles...I thought it improved the idle and ran a bit smoother. Taking the OE filter out, I was amazed that the engine could ever breathe with that cheap paper filter.

Is it worth $50? Can't answer that but then again, I don't have to buy another filter for a long time. Just going to clean and re-oil at 30k miles or so.
