As I am not a dyed in the wool GTO o phile, I just learned of the tire shredding situation with GTOs where some cars have had all 4 tires explode at once. Apparently the tires are too close to the struts and can rub, leading to premature wear of the sidewalls. http://www.newsnet5.com/investigations/11003693/detail.html How many of you GTO owners are on other tires and if we get tires on the G8 that are larger than on teh Commodore will we have a problem also?

The GTO was not design to come to the US. When it was shipped to the US it was decided to give us a wider tire than what was available in Australia (245 vs. 235). Only the some of the GTOs with the 17 inch 245 width tires suffer from the dreaded strut rub (18 inch came with 235s). The G8 was designed to come to the US and the tires should not be an issue.

I don't think a single GTO has had a sidewall/strut rub problem with all 4 tires at once....especially since it only has struts in the front.

Never had strut rub issue on my car but it is an issue on some GTO's which some dealers made it worse by not covering it under warranty. But something like blowouts by strut rub shouldn't really happen if the owner of the car paid some attention to their tires once in awhile. The tires just don't shred in an instant, it takes several thousand miles to occur. I'm sure if caught early the dealer might be willing to work with owners on trying to get the issue resolved.

True. After the GTO import deal, Holden expected to get the call to export the Commodore. So, most of the important technical decisions had the U.S. consumer in mind.

The only way all 4 blew out at once would be a rolling burnout with the fronts rubbing the struts & the rears building up too much air pressure. Like nixapatfan said, if owners would take a little initiative to check up on their car, they would catch this problem before it stranded anyone.
