Unlikely this will affect anything, especially seeing as he's working 'outside the automotive industry'. Doesn't sound like he's jumping ship, but rather exploring other options, or opportunities.
Change is good regardless, GM needs it.

I agree. To move outside the entire industry at 44 sounds like he never really found his niche in autos. And surely GM has to be topheavy with management anyway.

I'm sure that's the case. Especially with all the baby-boomers now right around that 'management' age

And with guys like Bob Lutz hanging around well past normal retirement age, it probably restricts to some extent vertical movement. Now I am all in favor of the best and brightest continuing as long as they have that fire and passion as Bob does, but how does a guy at 44 see himself moving to the top when many of the team 20 years his senior have no plans of stepping aside anytime soon.
