Boomer 05-12-2008, 12:44 PM Post three things from your computer to compare everyone's gas mileage (V6 guys too).
Post your Trip (or miles driven since your Avg. MPG has been reset), Avg. Speed and Avg. MPG
i will edit my post with my stats when i get home (I'm at work and don't remember right this minute).
I'll start

I know. I don't know how some of you are getting these number above 15 mpg. I drive with the lightest foot I can and the most I have seen is 12 mpg. Filled up the gas tank on friday ($70), by saturday, half a tank, gone.

My gas milage is getting worse.
When I first got the car it was at 16mpg avg now its at 13mpg avg.
Im not driving any different.

I just live in an area with constant stop and go stop and go every few feet. The worst the DIC has shown me was 2.4 mpg
Atlas 05-12-2008, 02:06 PM that explains it, try using manual mode in that kind of driving... manual mode netted me the 25.5, while normal resulted in the 21.5...

Hold on manual mode gets better mpgs than normal drive? I thought manual was worse because of the higher revs?:driving:
please tell me I'm rong. I love driving in manul mode but since my mpg was already bad i figured I shouldn drive in manual
Boomer 05-12-2008, 03:09 PM well you can shift earlier in manual mode too. so i'm sure in certain situations manual mode could be a benefit to your MPG. the only thing is that manual mode disables AFM....
_G8GT_ 05-12-2008, 03:23 PM oh ok. remind me what afm is again
macgto 05-12-2008, 03:23 PM Trip: 271

Atlas 05-12-2008, 03:28 PM AFM is active fuel management, it shuts off 4 cylinders when cruising at high speeds and low loads (ie highway driving)... i think it is worthless, and have seen better fuel economy in manual mode...
_G8GT_ 05-12-2008, 03:53 PM OK well i'm gonna try manual mode for this week. As im going to florida for a holiday this saturday and want my car to be empty so my stepmom cant drive it lol. As some of you remember she totalled my last car which was an 08 Audi A4 while i was away in the UK.

Ryan M 05-12-2008, 04:03 PM Eeehhh... these numbers are not looking so great like some of the other mpg threads had at first.
As the gas gets more expensive it becomes lower quality? Its $4.30/gal for 92 octane premium w/ 10% ethanol here now.
But I guess you cant expect too much from a 4,000+ pound car with a 6.0L V8 that can easily push 400hp in stop and go driving...

Not kidding. Emergency situation. I landed at the airport after being gone all week on business. I filled the car up after getting out of the airport, realized I had a voicemail, that stated that the wifey was in the ER, needed emergency surgery, get there ASAP. ASAP means ASAP to me. Found the speed governer REAL quick. Hence why I know how well the car handles at that speed.

buzzard31581 05-12-2008, 05:34 PM I haven't got my G8 yet. I'm going to the dealer this week to make a deal on one though. All I have to say is that you guys are starting to scare me with these REALLY low MPG's. I expected to see more in between 18-20 MPG. Then again, I also look at your average speeds and I think to myself that my average speed has got to be higher than those. My daily commute is about 25 miles and about 20 of that is on a highway that's 50-55 MPH (which I usually do 60-65 on :driving:). I'd imagine at a higher average speed my MPG's would be a little bit better as 20-25 MPH is not very good for your MPG's, which is what most of you seem to have.
Would you think that's a fair assesment?

The average is counting when you're not moving, aka, at a red light. When you average ZERO in, it tends to bring that number down. Think about it. You spend MORE time driving slower, because you're covering less ground per unit time. 30mph average is actually really high.

True, but I've only got three lights between me and work. They're fairly close and if I can make it through the first one, I can usually make it through the others no problem.
I don't live in a big city so I have VERY little stop and go driving.

From personal experience, I've never seen a cop pull out when you pass them going that fast. No chance in hell of catching you with so many exits on the highway.
I was lucky too. I didn't care, had a purpose, wasn't letting anything else change that.
GETGONE 05-12-2008, 08:15 PM First tank of gas 17.5mpg and topped off after burning just over 1/4 tank of gas and got 18.5. I did manual calculations against the DIC and found it's right on for me. My wife drives it one day so far and it's showing like 14.5mpg! She's a leadfoot! I'm hoping it improves after about 3K miles like my Camaro SS did. Sad part is the WORST I ever got in my SS is 19mpg and that was drag racing at the track and doing 5K RPM clutch dumps! Gotta love a 6 speed manual!

True. Not that anyone should just go out there and try it! You had a reason and the know how so it's cool. How did the car feel at those speeds?

edfiero 05-13-2008, 06:56 AM I'll second the point about the AVG Speed. The guys with crappy MPG numbers also have very low AVG speed numbers. I'm still on my first tank of gas but my AVG speed is in the 30's and the mileage is reading in the low 20's. I expect to see the mileage increase as I build up the AVG speed with more highway trips.
glugo1001 05-13-2008, 07:53 AM I just filled up yesterday, but didn't note the average speed. It was above 30 mph, though:
Trip: 353
Avg. MPG: 20.6
brad02ss 05-14-2008, 01:45 PM I've been averaging just under 20 mpg (18-20) over my first 1000 miles with lots of mixed driving, and flooring it when I feel the urge (which is quite often).
I noticed a steady speed of 30-50mph will give about 30mpg, 77mph is about 22mpg, its the acceleration of course that will really kill the mileage.
I checked the computer a few times by manual diving the miles driven by the gallons and it seems very accurate.
G8>550i 05-14-2008, 01:54 PM A slightly different comparison...my 2004 CTS with 3.6L VVT engine (same as base G8) got about 19 mpg in my mix of city and highway driving. Absolute max was 28 mpg.
So far my G8 GT is getting 15 mpg...was hoping for 17. Maybe after it is broken in.
Haven't had a chance to run the Absolute route yet.
SRG963 05-14-2008, 08:01 PM Since I drove it off the lot I've been getting average of 20 MPG, average speed 40. 150 miles on the clock

KaiserM715 05-19-2008, 08:20 AM Trip: 139.1
Avg. Speed: 49.1 mph
Avg. MPG: 24.5
We were getting 27.0 mpg with the cruise set at 66 mph (I haven't hit 3000 miles yet) coming back from Austin (from fill-up outside of Austin to our driveway). My wife has done some in town driving on that tank, bringing down the avg mpg. I am pretty pleased. We were running 89 octane. I will try some different octanes on my next trip.
macgto 05-19-2008, 09:44 AM Currently, I have about 650 miles on the car. My mpg right now stands at 18.8 of 75/25 local/hwy.
Truth be told, I took the car to a local club event this weekend, and was driving it (showing off) a little more than I usually do! :gears:
mac
Shaffe 05-19-2008, 02:39 PM well in my 2007 Mustang GT
last tank this morning i netted 20.6MPG. thats mixed driving, probably 65% stop and go and 35% highway
best ive ever seen the computer tell me was 28.7 driving to the race track, worst was 4.0 at the track!
so id say you guys with your 6.0L and heavy cars are doing pretty good.

I kept it in manual mode - 6th gear (to lock out AFM vibration), not bad MPG without AFM...also no real big hills, so I was able to keep it there without lugging the engine.
blkout 05-19-2008, 11:12 PM I specifically got the v6 because of gas prices unfortunately. My wife drives the gas guzzling ford explorer about $80.00 a week and the way things are going in Maryland at 3.89 for regular I had no plans on GT. It is really a shame that we have to base what we want now a days on the MPG we are headed for a serious depression. Consumer reports state gas will be at and average of $10.00!!!! per gallon by 2011. That is for regular!!!!Insane I told my wife if no GT than im taking the extra 2 grand and getting some black rims with red bezels. Thats just what I did got Giovanna Double G 505 Flat Black 20x8.5 with Red Bezel can't wait to put on will post pic's once on. Here they are on a Bentley.

VENOM 05-20-2008, 07:30 AM well, i currently have albout 250 miles on my first tank of gas and I am right at half on the gas tank. when i get on the highway, it just up over 200 in range. the way I have been driving this car and the little city I do drive, I can eaily get 26mpg. If you read your window sticker, below the rated highway it reads "most people averaged between 22 and 29." That right there tells you this car CAN get very good gas mileage if you drive it between 65-70mph on the highway. I set my cruise to 65, 66, 67 mph and am getting fantastic gas mileage. i will let you know the final mileage numbers once I fill up prob on Thursday
Mr.Detroit 05-21-2008, 01:23 AM Interesting. My car now seems settled at 14 mpg, my speed is normally in the 26-28 range so I guess it is to be expected. But 14 is a huge improvement considering how I was getting 12.4-13.6 when I first got the car, I wonder if it has something to do with the fact I keep putting premium in the car?
G8 Ray 05-21-2008, 06:03 AM You'll be able to do better once you stop stomping on the loud pedal. :)

edfiero 06-23-2008, 07:22 AM For those people getting above 22 MPG, I'd like to know if you are in area of the country where you have 10% ethanol in your gas. We have 10% in all of our gas here in SE Pennsylvania, and I can't get over 21 (with a very light foot), unless I'm doing cruise control on the interstate for an extended period of time.

Same here in York. I have seen my mileage top out at about 25.5 on the highway. But once I'm in commuter mode, it will drop off pretty quick and settle somewhere in the 15.5-16.5 range.

TexasG8 06-23-2008, 09:25 AM Took my first trip in the G8. 70% highway and 30% city.
The drive up there was 270 miles and I was driving 70mph and was getting 23.5 mpg. Drove around in the city for a week and drove back home at 80mph without resetting the trip and I was getting 20.5mpg with a total of 800 miles. This was all done with the trunk full of cloths and 5 people in the car. My wife, 3 kids, and me.

I went on a bike ride around Cape Ann, Mass on friday and averaged 17.2mph. 23.7 miles. Drank a 20 oz gatorade. so pretty good mpg. Maybe you should buy a bike for the suburbs...

(And FWIIW the TrailblazerSS got 15.7 on the 251 mile ride home.)It is just a result of the area I am in, top speed (no highway on that tank) was maybe about 45mph. Too many stop signs and traffic lights, simmilar to driving only in NYC and never on the highway, my last car with a 6cyl got 11mpg in those conditions, not much better.
_G8GT_ 06-23-2008, 02:26 PM I drive mostly suburb driving and at first I was getting avg: 15.9 and then I realised that the reason wasnt driving fast or stop + start traffic but I accelerate faster than most. So I started crawling from a stop and its now 18.6. I drive the same roads, same distance but less acceleration from a stop. (unless of corse there is a need for showing off ;) then I shall rise to the occasion!)

thanks for posting that! when do you usually fill up? right when it hits "low fuel"? or try to run it a little more dry?

Usually right about when it hits the low fuel light, but for the record, here's how many gallons I put in each time:
5/20 - 17.069 gal
5/27 - 17.812 gal

Man I've been there! Your right foot just can't be heavy enough during those times (not that its a good or right thing to do but fear has a way of motivating).
What did you top out at? I heard its governed around 150mph? Did you bounce off of that?

LSxcellent 06-23-2008, 05:25 PM Just an interesting sidenote for folks on here... I am also an avid MINI fanatic and I listen in on many forums and I find it interesting that the G8 is average ~20mpg for most highway/continuous type driving.
Just for reference, the MINI Cooper S weighs ~ 2700lbs and is averaging about 33mpg for the same type of driving.
Given the proportions, the G8 is getting pretty good mileage for its size!
4000lbs/2700lbs = 1.48
33/20 = 1.65
If you figure in the advantages of a turbo motor, I'd say the G8 is doing pretty well. You can't really expect a 4000lb/6.0L car to get GREAT mileage, but for what it is its doing pretty well!
~LSx
P.S. - I'm waiting on a G8 GXP, so I'll be lucky to get 20mpg!

139mph. With DBW, it just stops accelerating and sits at that speed, no matter how planted my foot was.

LSxcellent 06-24-2008, 07:44 AM 139mph. With DBW, it just stops accelerating and sits at that speed, no matter how planted my foot was.
Hmmm, I'm gonna have to get THAT fixed ;-) That car should NOT be restricted to such a low speed.. hell, my MINI can to 139!
I hear that the GXP, unrestricted, would top 175mph! Now THAT's movin'!

sonnyg08 06-26-2008, 02:06 PM Well i drive the base g8 with the v6 and im driving only in city and i'm getting 15 to 17 mpg and thats that the fastest i go is prolly about 40mph
buzzard31581 06-30-2008, 04:29 PM I've had a few tanks through so far and don't remember all the numbers. First tank was 18.9 MPG, second was 19.6. And here's the numbers from my most recent fill-up.
Trip: 301.91
Avg. Speed: 40.6
Avg. MPG: 20.2
Fuel: 14.828 Gal
Usual commute is 23 miles one way with about 4-5 miles at or below 35 MPH. The rest is 50-55 where I drive 55-65 like everyone else on that road. I could have gone longer without filling up, but I don't usually like letting it get below 1/4 of a tank.
EDIT: That was all 87 fuel too.
Ebein 07-01-2008, 04:18 PM I recently took my IOM GT from detroit to Atlanta for a wedding.
And after that went to Orlando and took my boys to SeaWorld.

Mileage like that isn't hard. Hell my buddy was getting 19 MPG in his 3/4 ton truck while mine was getting 13 MPG in mine, the difference....I reset my economy readings at fill up, he reset his once he reached his preferred cruising speed on the interstate.

Don't really think that would qualify as AVERAGE MILES PER GALLON. More like selected miles per gallon!?!:wink2:
timbrie 07-03-2008, 07:53 AM Trip: 260
Avg Speed: 67.8
MPG: 26.3
I recently drove from Pittsburgh to New York and back, and took various measurements out on the interstates. Upon reaching cruising speed (65-70), I would re-set the MPG calculator, set cruise control, and enjoy the ride for a couple of hours. I couldn't "feel" the AFM kick in, but it apparently works pretty well. I think you have to rack up 40-50 miles in order to get an accurate MPG reading. During one stretch, I kept it steady at 62 mph and registered a 28.6 mpg. I know that seems hard to believe, but I did it again and got the same result. I also did a manual MPG calculation (the old fashioned way) and it was consistent with what the car's system was telling me.
Around the city, I'm getting 14 to 15 MPG.
For a 6.0L V8, this is pretty decent mileage, in my opinion.
glugo1001 07-03-2008, 09:50 AM It is not that I don't believe ebein, but "Women lie about there age and men lie about there mileage."
I recently took a trip and fueled up right before getting on the interstate. I watched the MPG indicator the entire time, and I was consistently at 25.0 mpg the whole trip and even touched 25.3 for a while. If his whole tank was nothing but interstate driving, 25 mpg is easily attainable in this car.
Ebein 07-03-2008, 03:50 PM I reset my trip meter at the pump with each fill up ( which also resets
the speed/mpg ). I would typically burn 1/2 to 3/4 tank
between fill ups/pee breaks/food stops/etc/etc. Worst case would
be 3/4 to 1 mile non-highway driving per reading.
Since Ive been back in detroit driving back and forth to work
( surface streets ). Im averaging 28mph and about 14.8mpg... Yeah
I have a heavy foot when not traveling, and there are a couple nice
twists on my drive home that I like to sling the car through.
G8 dude 07-12-2008, 10:43 AM ya know what guys....we all knew that a 6.0 would not get great mileage but are you happy with your car...i am i drive 50 to 55 miles aday for work,,,when i leave work an press that pedal i feel good....my lowest was 12 my highest was 24 who cares just go out and have fun...i do
08G8GT 07-12-2008, 01:40 PM You can get any reading from your DIC that you want it depends on the road and when you reset it. I reset mine when I was going slightly down hill and got a reading of 80 avg. mph. and 50 avg. mpg. of course it went down from there. But finally ended up about 78 avg. mph. and 26 avg. mpg. distance about 15 miles. Most of the time I get ??? avg. mpg. at ??? avg. mph. don't really know and really don't care. I bought it for what it is a HIGH PERFORMANCE SEDAN with a big block V-8 and not a grocery getter with a inline 4 to get from point A to point B and back sometimes as fast and as expensive as I want and sometimes as slow and as cheap as I want. But hey if you are that concerned about mileage sell it and get a MOPED otherwise enjoy and drive it like you own it because hey you do own it.
RockyTop08 07-12-2008, 02:35 PM going 60 and 70 mph i get between 25 and 28 miles to the gallon

My commute is short and mostly city with lots of lights. Even still, my avg speed is between 26 and 28. I go fast where I can. :)
rayainsw 12-04-2008, 06:49 AM Two more data points, for those playing along at home:
Point 1:
I filled the tank early this AM.
Traveled 296 miles since filled.
Gage showed just under a quarter tank remaining.
“RANGE” showed 87 miles.
Fill took 14.0 gallons of premium – at $1.86.9/gal.
That is 21.1 MPG.
DIC showed 21.7 MPG.
Approx two thirds of this tank was a portion of the Interstate leg driving home from my Florida trip = 65 to 73 MPH.
The other third was my usual commute, in & out of MidTown Atlanta.
Point 2:
As soon as I filled the tank, I drove my typical inbound commute.
Warm engine, A/C off.
This is approx 18+ miles of Interstate, starting at approx 5:45AM – so reasonable traffic – no cruise control – speeds generally 60 to 75 MPH.
When I left the Interstate, for the final 3 miles or so of surface street driving, the DIC showed 22.4 MPG.
Driven identically, under the same conditions, my Corvette’s DIC would show 28 to 29 MPG.
Car: 2009 G8 GT – just passed 1,000 miles.

Snowbird 03-03-2009, 03:10 AM 14-17 around town, with the worst in heavy traffic or any frequent stop & go; 25+ mpg highway if the road is flat and I put it on cc for low 70s. Sometimes do even better if cruising nonstop at lower speeds. All this with AC & heat off. I use outside ventilation when weather is moderate. Just turn off the HVAC and fresh outside air comes through the dash vents, stronger if you crack or open the sunroof or a window.
Earlier I wrote about a 130 mi drive on I-75 with a couple of wot's & cruising at 80-85 most of the time. That came out to 21.9 mpg -- pretty good for a big hot rod sedan!
:offtheair:
IU GT 03-03-2009, 05:55 PM Trip: 984 miles
Avg speed: 29.4
MPG: 13.9
Average speed has been the same since I got my GT, but MPG used to be 15 - 15.2. It dropped once I started putting premium gas only in the tank. My lead foot has also since been lightened.
I blame it on the premium gas, but I don't care. I knew what I was getting into when I bought the car, it's more than worth it!
rayainsw 03-04-2009, 05:35 AM Update to my post above, #85:
I think there is some hope that the Highway MPG may
improve somewhat after “break-in”.
I noticed in my most recent fill, that I saw an improvement
in driving from a fill at a station just off the Highway to
where I must exit the Interstate & hit surface streets
for the final 2+ miles to work.
I fill the tank, with a warm engine, and drive less than
a half mile to the on-ramp.
Then drive almost exactly 20 miles – typically at 65 – 75
MPH, in light to moderate traffic [ too much to safely
engage the cruise control ] and fairly level roadways.
This I see as fairly close to ‘ideal conditions’.
When I exit, I typically check the DIC calculated MPG -
proven to be reasonably accurate, so far.
When I first noted the MPG, it was 22 – 23.
[ See above post ]
This last fill, it was 25.3.
Also, in a fairly typical [ so far ] tank
of commuting and a weekend, at approx 265 miles,
my DIC shows 20.1 MPG. Will fill tomorrow AM.
Where I would typically see somewhat lower.
Break-in effect?
In all my driving = 4,297 miles, including a fairly
long weekend drive out of state, my average [ Excel ]
is 19.25. Typical weekly commuting & weekend running
around, I average approx. 18.5.
Happy sMiles Per Gallon!

NC4stroker 03-05-2009, 07:15 PM I know. I don't know how some of you are getting these number above 15 mpg. I drive with the lightest foot I can and the most I have seen is 12 mpg. Filled up the gas tank on friday ($70), by saturday, half a tank, gone.
Black devil.....sounds like you may have gotten the 6.2L by mistake!
BTW, I got 15.4, but I'm sure my right foot cost me at least 2-3 mpg!!! (This was all in town driving)
RatherBeInCabo 03-08-2009, 05:32 PM Just completed a 322 mile weekend trip which was comprised of about 70% freeway and 30% windy mountainous roads.
Trip: 322.1
Average Speed: 50.5 mph
MPG: 21.8
The car was really fun on the twisty roads and the power came in very handy when it was necessary to pass a slower moving vehicle.
Bishop73 03-09-2009, 07:22 AM With just over 1k miles on her, this last tank got me 21.5 with an avg speed of 45.2. There were more highway miles on that tank than I've had on previous tanks.
DollarBill 03-09-2009, 02:46 PM Does anyone know how to convert the unit that Instantaneous MPG is measured in to MPG?
I've only had the car a week. But we went to Atlanta for the NASCAR race yesterday and I averaged 22.1 doing around 80 down the interstate most of the way.
dengel 03-09-2009, 03:19 PM Most of my daily driving is local roads only, with speed limits 25 mph to 45 mph, and I tend to average between 15 and 16 mpg.
So this weekend I had some plans that took me on a road trip of mostly highway driving, and I wanted to see what my highway performance numbers are. Ran the trip on a single tank of gas, had the low fuel light on for the last few miles. Numbers are cumulative for the trip.
First stop, after almost all expressway miles:
Trip: 127.97 mi
Avg. Speed: 61 mph
Avg. MPG: 23.7 mpg (would fluctuate between 23.7 and 24.0 - must be something weird in the algorithm that it wouldn't show an avg of 23.8 or 23.9 between?)
Second stop, also mostly expressway miles:
Trip: 230.33 mi
Avg. Speed: 61.1 mph
Avg. MPG: 22.6 mpg
Third stop, mostly expressway miles, but then the last 50 miles or so were local highways with occasional stoplights or stop signs.
Trip: 353.91 mi
Avg. Speed: 58 mph
Avg. MPG: 22.4 mpg
Terrain was mostly flat, which I think is a factor in when AFM kicks in.
z51l9889 04-06-2009, 07:27 PM Trip: Approx. 950 miles (3 tanks full)
Avg. Speed: 35.9
Avg. MPG: 18.2
The car was at approximately 1500 miles when I decided to let the average speed and MPG accumulate for a few fill-ups. The car is now at 2400 miles. City/highway mix is about 50/50. I drive on the highway with the cruise set at 70, but my in town driving has quite a bit of "high percentage throttle opening" operation. LOL.
Prior to this test, I had one 30 mile stretch on the highway where I had reset the average MPG readout and I was seeing 25.9 mpg and still rising when I had to exit.
JPEGXP 04-06-2009, 07:45 PM I just live in an area with constant stop and go stop and go every few feet. The worst the DIC has shown me was 2.4 mpg
Long Island driving is the worst, my prior G6 GTP was getting me on average 12-18MPG's
As for the GXP I just checked my DIC before coming inside and I was actually surprised
100 mile'ish trip
AVG Speed - 23.1
MPG - 12.4
My car now only has about 347 miles on it total, but I have not been driving it everyday to avoid breaking it in with long island's stop & go traffic.
lwh0032 04-06-2009, 09:05 PM I've got about 400 miles on the odometer. Have been driving over 80% "city" on this tank. By city driving I mean stop sign or light every couple hundred feet. My DIC says I'm averaging 14.8. I'm suprised that its actually close to the EPA rating for city.
barbeau82 04-07-2009, 01:58 PM Just did a road trip from Georgia to San Antonio, 4 people, trunk full, a/c set to 75, 93octane
Avg speed: 70mph (though cruise was set to 75, there was gas station idling as I got the kids dvd started and made sure all was done to keep peace until they fell asleep)
Trip Miles: 360 (low fuel warning went off)
Mileage: 23mpg
Started trip with a little over 5000miles on the car, one way was 1200 miles.
On the way back I experimented using 87 Octane, got 3mpg worse on one tank. Did some "bored at 5am with 8 of 16 hour drive completed," came to the conclusion that paying more upfront for premium was the only downside compared to regular. After loss of mileage and such, money saved upfront filling up with regular was made up with shorter range compared to premium.
Aaron407 04-12-2009, 11:28 PM I tested the mileage yesterday for a 15 minute drive at 61MPH, flat land, essentially no wind, 59 degrees F, 1600' elevation, no A/C, normal drive mode, 91 octane with no ethanol.
The DIC said I was getting 7.2L/100km's, which equates to 33MPG :). Funny thing is that the DIC always says I've used more fuel than I have, which tells me that the actual mileage is probably even a little better. All I have done is a VMS TCM tune, K&N drop-in filter, and homemade replacement intake tubing. Just shy of 3000 miles on her.
EDIT: just read through some of the other posts, seems mine must be a factory freak since the stuff I have done shouldn't account for that much difference. Note that this is indeed miles per American gallon, not Canadian gallons.
bjrbm13 04-17-2009, 08:23 PM Mine was 72.8 avg speed and the MPG was 99.9.
Then again I got 14.3 MPG on the other side of the Mountian going up hill.:driving:
shane 04-18-2009, 08:00 PM well so far with mine i Avg 17-19 city..
on the highway ive gotten a worst of 23 and best of 29...both 20-25 mile trips.

rayainsw 04-20-2009, 06:59 AM I filled the tank last Thursday PM.
I drove my typical Friday commute, with typical [ terrible ] Friday PM traffic, a lunch run, and Saturday AM grocery shopping trip.
The DIC showed MPG = just over 18.
I drive from Duluth, GA to [ and through ] Helen, GA – on my way to Anna Ruby Falls.
Excellent weather, excellent drive – and a beautiful day for a walk in the woods.
[ Pictures here, if anyone cares:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rayainsw/Anna%20Ruby%20Falls%20apr%2009/?albumview=slideshow ]
So – driving up & back, with 50 to 60 miles of so of Interstate [ 85 & 985 ] and another 60 – 70 miles of mostly 2 lane country roads, with much lower speed limits & several miles of low speed switchbacks approaching & leaving the parking area for the Falls, the DIC MPG [ not reset ] had risen to 21.9.
Given the elevation rise on the trip north of 800’ or so, the fact that I was not driving for maximum MPG, and much of the trip is under conditions that are not favorable for max MPG, I was impressed that it rose to that figure.
Given the first 60 miles average of 18 MPG, the trip MPG must have been 24 – 25 MPG – and I think that is very impressive.
2009 G8 GT – just short of 6,000 miles.
YMMV.

If you're going to measure it manually, you have to do it from fill-up to fill-up.
Using the DIC, you can reset it at any point to find out what you are getting on your latest drive. I have measured the mileage manually and compared it against the DIC and the DIC has been right on consistantly.
Suburban driving gets me about 13-15 mpg. Highway gets me about 25-27 mpg. I haven't really done much city driving, but based on my experience with the car, I'd expect nothing over 13 driving in a large city.
Top Speed 04-23-2009, 02:02 PM Just drove a 1000 mi trip all interstate. Had 4 adults, luggage, and full size spare on board. 87 octane in tank. DIC said 23.5 MPG. This is running 80-85 mph on interstate.
ZO6TrailblazerSS 04-23-2009, 02:36 PM These numbers are pretty solid! Some a little low, some where I like seeing them. I have a 2007 Trailblazer SS I use as my DD. I just looked and saw 4921 gallons of gas used in 51,276 miles= I NEED A NEW DD!!! I am really leaning again towards the G8 GT again, once I saw the epa on the GXP's. Good info guys!
jaxredg8 04-23-2009, 03:39 PM I get about 08 runs per tank. Oh wait, you meant mpg? I was talking about trips down the quarter per bottle re-fill!! MUSCLEG8 04-27-2009, 08:40 PM To All,
I am pround to say driving conservatively I got 28 miles to the gallon going to work from home and 27.3 miles to the gallon coming back. When I drive it hard I get about 19 miles to the gallon. This engine and car is amazing, I can't believe I get this out of a V8 that runs 87 octane fuel. This weekend I will be installing a K&N drop in air filter and I will see what kind of gas mileage I get then. I am curious to see if it improves any. :)
~ MUSCLEG8
s5traut 04-27-2009, 08:53 PM Are you guys with CAI's, and catbacks seeing any increase in mileage?
I'm installing my Borla catback and RF-CAI Wednesday. Haven't settled on a tune yet. I have also heard that increase in mileage is offset by the "heavy footedness" in light of the new found power...
VRUNNER 05-24-2009, 02:44 PM Bringing this thread back from the dead!! My 06 GP GXP got 19 miles per gallon mixed driving, 60 percent highway and 40 percent traffic/city. It was my DD and had 88k on her. She was totaled:(. Plus I was not light on the throttle. I am picking up GT/GXP Monday. I am leaning towards the GT right now however the GXP's don't look likr they are getting bad MPG or at least not as bad as I thought it would be.
nadir 05-24-2009, 06:22 PM Three and half weeks in after buying my GT, I am averaging between 16 to 17 mpg in my mixed driving. I am still in the "break-in" period, but I am trying to baby it some what. Not going to romp on it every chance I get.

flyusmc 07-20-2009, 03:34 PM I feel my (stock) motor is running pretty good. I checked the computer display and it was spot on with the miles / fillup calculation I did. I average well over 28 MPG between Colorado Springs and Denver. On a couple of occasions I almost hit 30 MPG. BTW I go from 75-45 on that commute (lots of road construction). Keep in mind this is at almost a mile high in the middle of 90 degree summer weather. I am sure I can get into the low 30's at sea level and a little cooler temperatures.

Here is my latest screen shot today. It reads average speed around 63 mph and average MPG @ 28. This was rather early on in my trip and it got to almost 29 MPG today.

G8addict 07-20-2009, 03:41 PM I typically get 20.x mpg
VRUNNER 07-21-2009, 10:18 AM Well got the GXP and happy I did!! Mileage is about 18 mpg mixed 40% highway and 60% stop and go. Not bad at all. On the highway I get 24 to 26 driving 70 mph. I am not sure where Pontiac got the mileage figures they posted on the window sticker...
Snowbird 07-21-2009, 09:18 PM The G8 GT's EPA ratings seem pretty close to me: 15 city, 24 highway. I get both, sometimes better than the hwy figure if it's flat with no AC on & sunroof tilted. My city/hwy combo is around 18-19.
It's not slower speeds that hurt city mpg; it's the stop and go. I covered 15 miles city recently, speed limits 35 to 45, only one or two stops and averaged over 27 mpg. HWY: On a recent 90 mi stretch of I-75 in Ohio, the speed limit was 65 so I set CC at 68 & drove nonstop, no passing. Averaged 27.3 on premium with CAI and VMS tune added.
On the same drip, leaving Detroit, computer jumped between 29-30 mpg for a 10 mile stretch where I was cruising at 58-62. Killing the AC helps; just run it briefly to bring through cool outside air, then tilt the roof ... let fresh air flow thru the vents ... & use CC. Comfortable for me when outside temps are 65 to about 78-80.
cmgww 07-21-2009, 09:28 PM Just got back from a trip to our lake place....
mostly highway, some stop and go (Kokomo, stoplight city) but mainly nice cruising at 65 or so. overall trip was 135 miles, 23.8 MPG! Not too shabby....averaging around 18 in the city...and car only has 1,200 miles on it. I am hoping for even better MPG as it fully breaks in....
glugo1001 07-23-2009, 09:20 PM Well, I just hit 34,000 miles and my average MPG over a tank just keeps getting better and better! If I get on the highway just after filling up, I regularly show 28.0-28.3 AVG MPG. Today, I hit 29.0 AVG MPG! This is after 45 miles of driving! With the 6.0 V8!
Of course, once I hit the surface streets, the MPG drops, but over the course of a tank, I used to be 20.x, and now I'm regularly high 22's to low 24's. I use cruise control a lot and I try to keep it at 69 mph on the interstate. Not bad for a V8! :):driving:
Severn 07-27-2009, 02:58 PM I'm still in the break in period of about 280 miles. But my driving has been mostly in-town and I've been averaging only 11.8 MPG. I'm going very easy on the gas too. Hopefully it will increase drastically after 1000 miles or so. If not, I will have to trade it in on something else. I didn't get the G8 GT for the MPG, but I also didn't expect to be driving a Hummer either lol.

My gas mileage wasn't that great to start either. Once you break it in, you should get about 20 mpg. Also, the difference in gas will not make up for the bath you would take in a trade in that quickly.

Yea, I don't want to make any judgements before 1000 miles. As far as trade in value, I was lucky enough to take advantage of one of Nino's deals. $7200 off sticker. So that helps a lot. But I think a lot of the problem is being able to see that dang MPG right in your face on the computer readout! If it weren't there I wouldn't be thinking about it so much lol.
cmgww 07-28-2009, 08:08 AM Here's mine after some easy country road driving about 15 miles after a fill up...so yeah it's a bit inflated but still cool to see 27 MPG!

johnh 07-28-2009, 01:32 PM I don't see how you can get 11.8....the worse I've ever seen was 16-17mpg from stop and go and nailing it WOT (tune testing). Heck that's in Suburban territory.
RobertHammen 07-28-2009, 02:14 PM 11.8? You have a GT or a GXP?
Wife was getting 17 on her GXP (her commute is .6 miles - yes, .6 - not a typo - so a lot of city driving during the week, highway driving on the weekends).
I've been getting 20-24 mpg on my G8, depending if I'm driving it city or highway... just have a 93 octane tune, but haven't installed my Roto-Fab yet...
2StepsAhead 07-28-2009, 02:24 PM 16.4 all day, everyday...mixed. A little highway, mostly city...stock G8 GT. If I reset on the highway I usually see 24, but the highway only lasts so long until I hit Brooklyn and then I drop significantly lol.

lol, it's the GT.
Driving back from Houston I reset it and it surprisingly started at about 26 MPG, but by the time I got home, it was 23. No problem on that. But it's been declining a lot even on my avg. in town driving. I'm babying the living daylights out of this thing too to see if I can get the numbers up.
I haven't been on the highway the last couple of days and its still around 11.6 now. Earlier today it actually dropped to 10.8. No lead foot driving at all.
brad02ss 07-28-2009, 04:27 PM I gained 1mpg (from 19.8 to 20.8) after adding a K&N filter and ditching the middle resonator for an X-pipe. Not big but thought some of you might be interested. I do lots of city driving and have a heavy foot.:driving:
angus60 07-29-2009, 01:04 PM have driven 1884miles. mpg is 18.67 in mostly rural driving
macgto 07-29-2009, 01:20 PM Took a trip to Ocean City Maryland last week. All highway, and relatively flat terrain. Averaged 26.6 mpg on the way down, cruising at 65-75 the entire way. Throw in the around town driving while there, and the mileage dropped to 18.9. Filled up and reset for the journey home, averaged 25.5 at a 70-80 pace (more 80 though. was itching to get home)
Avg for commuting and local driving, 17.6

Imalabil 07-29-2009, 01:57 PM Best I've seen w/ my BPM G8GT is 26.1 on steady streach of road @ 68mph in central Indiana. Stopping for lights drags it down a bunch.

Paddle562 07-30-2009, 03:23 AM Trip: 3812.2 (not a typo)

I drove my new GT from my folks' house in MD all the way to San Fran and finally to my place in SD with my pops. I love this car.
mongosG8 07-30-2009, 04:32 AM Sucks ass mpg.. That baiscally sums it up.
On the hwy I will be lucky to get 17 mpg?? Thats at 65mph.
Dont even ask about city. I dont know how everyone is getting these high numbers.
Im not even driving it hard.
RobertHammen 07-30-2009, 06:52 AM Use the cruise, keep it at 70 or less, reset the MPG, you should see 22-24 easy. If not, try a different brand of fuel or else something is awry...
RobA300 07-30-2009, 07:18 AM Been a while since I reset the average mpg because I wanted to see what I get overall for a few months. My DIC says Avg. Speed 37.8, Avg MPG 22.2, but my last tank was 299 miles and I put in 13 gallons so that is 23 MPG.
buzzard31581 07-30-2009, 08:56 AM I was consistently getting in the mid-high 19's with an average speed of around 40MPH. Every once in a while it would get up to 20. That was over the course of a year I was getting very similar numbers.
I dropped in a Volant CAI about two months ago and have run a few tanks of gas through it. Now I'm consistently getting high 20's to low 21's again with an average speed around 40 MPH.
If I do anything other than my typical daily/weekly commute (driving to the store, visiting my sister and nephews, etc) it can throw the numbers off a bit. But I've definitely seen an improvement of about 1-1.5 MPG with the CAI.
MidlifeG8 07-30-2009, 09:18 AM Trip 488

Rob,
I have been putting Mobil 93 Super in it. I applied the cruise coming home from work this morning. I would like to know when the AFM kicks on and off. I cannot tell at all if it goes on or not. Also I noticed at 65-70 mph and people are blowing by me like Im in reverse so Im wondering if I need a calibration on my speed o and all? hmmm? I just received my Volant CAI and hopefully my Borla next week. I pray this helps me out some. When I had my 96 Camaro SS gas was only 1.35 a gallon so I didnt care so much but I was still averaging between 22-24 mpg.
gearhead65 07-30-2009, 11:57 AM 17.0 mpg at last fillup for combined city/hwy mileage. It only had about 450ish miles when I filled it up. Hopefully it will improve as mileage increases.
DJConan 07-30-2009, 03:39 PM There's a few of us from here over at mgptune.com keeping our mileage records. There were 11 G8s up there the last time I logged in. Besides mpg, I think it's a good place to track all maintenance work and see what your spend a year on your car.
I'm averaging 19 overall. Up to 29 highway and down to 13 in suburbia.
mongosG8 07-31-2009, 10:00 AM Today on the hwy the car averaged 20 with the cruise set at 69. lol! 70 is pushing it with the State Troopers. As long as I wasn't seeing 15-17 like it was. I would be satisfied if I can average 18-20. Thats fine with me.
MUSCLEG8 07-31-2009, 12:24 PM Here is my MPG this morning on the way to work after filling up with 93 octane:

Something's screwy here. The only way that's possible is if you had at least a 23.5 gallon tank. 488/20.8=23.46

I've seen mine get up to 32. I filled up right before getting on the interstate and I had a run of about 90 miles almost all downhill.
Then it flattened out and started going up and down hill a little more and it dropped slowly to an average of 25 for the rest of the trip.
RobertHammen 08-03-2009, 04:14 PM Rob,

Hold down the leftmost (return) button when starting the car, will put it into engineering mode and you can see when AFM is active. For me it seemed to go off at 71-72mph, so as long as I kept it under there (yeah right)...
Heck, driving 400 miles in the GXP (to Madison, to Chicago, all around downtown (in traffic) and then home, I averaged 20.8... on the GXP! (average speed was 55 mph)...

That's pretty darn good, Robert. The best I saw was 27.2 in mine crusing around 70 from Chicago to Madison. That was with a couple WOT onramp runs. :driving:
Sunfighter 08-03-2009, 10:34 PM I got as high as 28.2 on my trip from NWA to New Jersey. Its nice filling up a car and seeing the Range at 540ish miles.
RobertHammen 08-04-2009, 12:07 AM Haven't seen higher than 26 on my GT, and that was 60 mph cruise control on... so I thought the 20.8 on the GXP wasn't too shabby...
Severn 08-06-2009, 01:44 PM 2nd full tank I'm getting 14.5 mpg. 50/50 town and city driving. Computer showed 14.8. Hopefully it will pick up drastically. I need at least 18 mpg combined to justify keeping this baby. I will go another 5 fillups and that should give me a good indication on where it will settle out at.
ak01q 08-08-2009, 04:30 PM Best I've had so far is 29 mpg on a trip up north. All miles on US23, speed was 60 mph, no slowdowns, no stops except for gas.
Normally I get between 23.5 to 24.5 mpg. Almost al of my driving is expressway.
Quietpro 08-08-2009, 10:08 PM There's a few of us from here over at mgptune.com keeping our mileage records. There were 11 G8s up there the last time I logged in. Besides mpg, I think it's a good place to track all maintenance work and see what your spend a year on your car.

I set up a profile on mpgtune.com too. I'm the second best fuel mileage there so far. The leader does all mixed driving, it appears. Mine is mixed with some highway trips...but it's still really early in this car's life.
Trip: 197
Avg Speed: 32.4
Avg MPG: 18.8
Best: 27.07 MPG @ 67.2 MPH (321 miles/11.857 gal)
Imalabil 08-14-2009, 07:48 PM New personal best: reset the MPG meter when driving 50-55 mph through a construction zone with no traffic to slow me down. Saw 36.2, which decreased over about 10 minutes to 33.4.
At that point construction was over and it was back to real highway speeds--and real highway mpg.

cmgww 08-16-2009, 07:44 PM The all time RECORD!!! Averaged this at 100 mph over 2000 miles....or I just reset it after a fill up and was coasting....

GETGONE 08-16-2009, 07:53 PM What is the point of these retarded "special conditions" MPG figures? You need to figure it over the entire tank or it's worthless. Better yet, several tanks average over a month or more.

wannabebad 08-18-2009, 11:34 AM I get 23-25 depending on where I'm headed. Living in the hills here there are times it drops some more but usually for an entire trip I usually take 125 miles I'll be right at 23-25 mpg thats mixed with some "city" driving here in Rural Eastern Kentucky! haha

HAHA i do love this i can relate. Mine prolly isnt verry good i have been racing mine around since i got it to fun of a car to care about milage just yet maybe in spring i will.
RMcoolX 10-06-2009, 12:10 PM Best I've seen is 18 around town, 27 highway. Car is stock with less than 4k miles.

I agree, the entire tank or tanks plus avg MPH + avg MPG or this info is useless. :wink2: All my tanks are about the same, 20 MPH @ 14MPG
bostonf4$ 10-08-2009, 10:38 AM My car just got a custom tune for 93 octane/TM plus vararam intake and magnaflow exhaust....so, waiting to see what those mods will do for my MPG.
I have 27,000 miles on my 2008 GT and I would say around the 15,000 mile point it started getting noticeably better gas mileage.
I leave my trip computer on up to 1,500 miles at a whack, and w/ about 70% hwy 30% city, averaging 70-80 on the highway and 0-30 in the city I AVERAGE 18.5-21....and that's over 1,000 miles so its pretty representative
those were the stock numbers I'll let you guys know what I see now once I get some miles under my belt w/ the new mods.
When I think back I had a 2005 accord 5 spd, 4 cyl vtec and it got 25-27 mixed mpg over 35,000 miles...I have the same driving style then as now, but felt the need to flog the accord more because of the lower power, higher revs, and great shifter.
SO...I'll take 5-6 less mpg from a car with double the HP @ THE WHEELS the accord has @ the crank & weighing probably 800 more lbs
wraleighkat919 10-09-2009, 02:04 PM Avg. Speed: 35.5
Avg. MPG: 20.6
CaliWagon31 10-12-2009, 10:36 AM Best ive seen has been 29 mpg at 71 mph during a 600 mile trip. Typically at 75 with decent amount of traffic I will see around 21-24 mpg. Ive averaged ~16.9 mpg in the city.
skuzbuket 10-12-2009, 01:00 PM So far, my average when I'm driving sensibly during my commute (which is about 75% highway and 25% city) I'm averaging about 20.2 to 21.2. Around town, my mileage is terrible, something like 11 or 12 mpg. I have not yet done a road trip in the car, so I do not have any pure highway measures. The highest mileage I've ever seen for a portion of a tank was somewhere around 25.
