: Battery Charge Levels - what is normal?

Just wondering what everyone is seeing on the D.I.C. when in Engineering mode for the battery charge level?

I have never seen higher than 90%, most times it is in the 80% range and sometimes as low as 70%.

Even after driving 100 miles it is never over 90.

Just wondering what everyone else is seeing to get a baseline.

Thanks in advance!

I still cannot figure out how to navigate when u enter an engineering more can someone tell me what to press to see all the options in the mode. I know how to get in but then i don’t what to do.
Please let me know what i need to press to see all the options.

Please let me know what i need to press to see all the options. You use the scroll wheel on the left side of the steering wheel to highlight the different line items, such as battery voltage, battery charge, oil life, etc. If you push the rectangular button, it takes you out of the engineering mode. You can not make any changes in engineering mode, it is just informational.

to enter engineering mode u hold the bottom when starting the car then u see on the screen it says resetting and then i cannot go anywhere else

Mines in the 90 plus area.

I wonder how accurate the info is on charge level, it all depends on how they measure it, as voltage is not a good indicator of % of charge....

Is this with the car running or with it off?

I don't know what's considered normal, but I did look at it the other day and it said 98%.

Hmmmm. Mine has been at < 10%. Evidently that isn't normal. :c

Is this with the car running or with it off? This is with the car running, thanks for asking.

I don't know what's considered normal, but I did look at it the other day and it said 98%.Wow, that is pretty high compared to what I got max.

Hmmmm. Mine has been at < 10%. Evidently that isn't normal. :cAt 50% mine barely started, but that was only the first day it was that low, sounds like the sense circuit on your car is not working properly.

BTW - after an ECM update by the dealer, it dropped to 7%, but that was not correct and by the next day it read 90% without more than a few miles of driving, so I am not really sure how it judges the charge level, as it would not go that low if it measured the open circuit volts, or the float voltage of the charging circuit then go high the next day.

Mine typically reads in the mid-80% range with the engine running.

Bumping an old thread ... it's been cold here lately, and around -10ºC today, and my charge started out the morning at 40.3%. During my 10 minute drive to work it only got up to 40.7%. Seems low, but maybe that's normal in cold weather. It still starts just as good as it did in the summer, although I've always thought it cranked kinda slow, even when the battery was 85%.

The regional told me not to pay too much attention to the % battery charge level as it does not always work.

Not sure if I believe him though.

hey what is all your alts charging at?MINE STAYS ABOUT 15.3 VOLTS FOR EVER IT SEEMS .SOME INPUTS PLEASE.

I think 85% -90% is normal for me... but i'm not paying too much attention on the percentage of charging my battery. the important their is the battery is still good and strong....

hey what is all your alts charging at?MINE STAYS ABOUT 15.3 VOLTS FOR EVER IT SEEMS .SOME INPUTS PLEASE.Mine sits around 15.3 Volts also. My current charge level shown is about 63%, and outside temp is 24F

Note, battery voltage changes based on load and also charging current.

The more load on it, the lower the voltage, the higher the charge level, the higher the voltage, and also the higher the charge current, the higher the battery voltage.

For example, if it has a 2 Amp charge going to the battery vs a trickle charge of 0.25 Amps, the battery voltage (given the same charge level) can vary by 0.5 Volts or more.

Also, some charging systems are temperature compensated and the charge voltage can vary based on outside temperatures.

Unfortunately Battery voltage alone does not tell you anything, as long as it is above 12V and not dropping you know the alternator is working.

The old amp meters are much better in telling you what is going on than a volt meter, but they cost more.......

even if that indecator is right, which i doubt it really is that close. the car probably wants to keep the battery at about 90% so there is no risk of overcharging. also that way the alternator does not have to completly stop charging, yet it modulates between charging just under what the car needs and when it goes down lower it will charge more then the car needs to get it back up to 90%. this keeps the alternators life span higher so it never had to run full time. but then again if it does dip down really low its going to have to run full time, or if you are runnning amps.
