I notice the first time that I washed my car that the paint does not feel smooth. It almost feels like there is overspray all over the car. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas as to how to remove this?

That's there so you don't slip off when walking on a wet roof or hood. :p

Thanks for your feedback. Looks like I have another project on my list for this weekend. Just hope the weather holds out, I am so sick off all this rain!

Might be rail dust?

My car also has what feels like overspray. It's actually quite common on new cars. I am going to the store to purchase a clay bar. It is the best line of "offense" on this offensive debris.

it is rail dust. grab some sullofane (sp?) its what ciggarrett packages are wrapped in. anyways, grab some of that, clay bar, and a good polish. clay your vehicle, then polish it. put your fingers in the sullofane and slide it across the vehicle and you will feel all the impurities before you clay and polish, then do it after and notice the difference. the sullofane helps you detect what you couldnt with just touching it yourself. hope that helps.

when you clay bar your car, first put some final detailer or something on it. Other people say as long as soap is on the car, but dont use the clay bar when the car is dry. That feeling will come right off

Another stupid question asked by me...what the hell is clay bar?

clay bar looks like a bar of soap but what it really is, is clay! Trust me, go to pep boys or NAPA and pick one up along with detailer spray. I prefer Meguiars final detail spray cause its perfect. You know the day after you wash it and you get a little dust or crap on your car, go over it wit that spray looks perfect...anyways...

what the clay bar does is pick up any impurities sitting on the paint such a sap or that gritty feeling like sand paper on the hood. If you run your hand over your paint, you can feel little bumps but also can hear it as well. You spray the detailer spray on an area, then take your clay bar and go in small circles. Wipe the area, and then feel it. It should be completly smooth. Clay bar is the BEST purchase anyone can make when detailing there car. My dad ran his own detailing business for 35 years and it rubbed off on me. Best thing is, when the clay bar gets dirty on one side, flip it over. When both sides get nasty, just wash it off OR start playing with it like clay, moving it inside and out to get a brand new side. It's really a great investiment and is not expensive at all. I encourage ANYONE to buy it. I spray some detailer inside a zip lock baggy and then put the clay bar in it to keep it clean.

Def invest in one because simply washing and waxing your car will NEVER get rid of that gritty, bumpy feeling your paint can get. Hope that helps! :)

:iagree: Just remember to keep folding the clay over...or you'll be scratching the paint with the rough stuff your taking off!

By the way, there is an EXCELLENT "How to use a clay bar on your car" demonstration by Pinnacle on YouTube. Just Google the sentence in the quotes above.

Chill is correct, cellophane or even your finger tips will tell you where the culprits are.

The clay bar is my new best friend! Man what a difference. Could not believe all the rail dust that was on the car. I am surprised however that when the car was detailed at the dealer that the rail dust was not removed when they buffed it out. Thanks for all your help. Found that link for the video to be really helpful.

if you apply wax over rail dust you get ..... waxed rail dust:)

a good wax should not have any cleaning agents at all! Thats all done in your paint prep. Which is why you still had some grit... dealer detailers wont ever take the time to clay a car.

I polished then HD Cleansed my car before I applied TC-3 sealer then Ivory Carnauba. Water still beeds and im happy with wax performance thus far.

Happy to advise, ive tested so many waxes.... real ones that is!!

How often should I use the clay bar?

if you wax often enough and wash the right way then you wont need to do it more thand once every 4-6 months. sometimes more.

lets say you detail and wax every 6-8 weeks. (recommended) the \n you should clay the third time.

Clay can sometimes remove the wax. I would "clay" only when I feel small bumps in the paint.
