: Oil Life Monitor
Zaphod B 05-13-2008, 02:48 PM I just invoked Engineering Mode for the first time today when I went out for lunch. Major cool, distracting as hell. :)
I've got 1850 miles on the clock and 79% oil life remaining. I should be abusing the thing a bit more, dontcha think? :driving:

For those who haven't purchased yet, what is engineering mode?

It's a set of detailed operational data that can be viewed on the DIC (driver information center), which is located on the dash between the tach and the speedo.
You can view parameters such as remaining oil life, throttle position, fuel quantity remaining, cooolant temp, transmission sump temp, rpm, battery charge, real-time fuel usage in gal/min, current transmission gear, AFM active/inactive and a couple of other things like software version numbers.
IXLR8 05-13-2008, 07:23 PM I don't suppose I could talk somone into telling how to put it into Engineering mode? I guess I could go look it up but this is easier....
Thanks!

Hold down "enter" key i.e. press left steering wheel roll control and turn the key on.:wink2:

Flog it 'til the pistons dent the hood!
jsalbre 05-14-2008, 08:14 AM Don't play with your DIC while you're driving. ;)

Haha, this from the guy with the $66 exhaust mod! :p
l3gofr3ak 05-14-2008, 05:06 PM i had 82% oil life when i got my first oil change.. i had 3337 miles on the car (i drive ALOT!) but i figured i was over 3k so why not.. of course it could be that i have a 3.6lt with 7.6qts of oil. but if it was telling me i was at 82% would that mean that when i hit 15% and it tells me to change the oil i would have over 14k before i hear anything from it?... by dealer terms THATS OVER A YEAR!!! 12k a year is "standard"... i drive more than that but this seems to good to be true.. so i dont trust my oil life indicator.

With LOTS of oil (which these cars have), you really don't have to change it often. Honestly, people change their oil TOO often, but its relatively cheap (not with these cars), so why not?
G8 Lover 05-15-2008, 08:12 AM My OLM in the Trailblazer and the GP GXP would go 10 k or more before it indicated I needed a change. With all the oil in the case, I would think 14k may be about right. I didn't feel bad going 10k with the premium oil and filter I was using.
14k? Don't know with less oil, there was someone on the GP GXP forum who went at least that long with Amsoil. When he sent it in for UOA (used oil analysis), it indicated that it was time to change. Again with all the oil in the pan, it almost seems reasonable. But, I would only do it with good oil and filter.

Absolutely. Its all about the type of oil and the filter. Just to give you an idea. Porsche specs their oil changes out at 15,000 intervals ($350 oil changes). Corky Bell (turbo expert) did a large writeup on oil changes and stated that 6000-7000 intervals on normal dino oil and 10,000 on synthetic was what it SHOULD be. HOWEVER, normal dino oil will break down over time, while synthetic won't (orders of magnitude time intervals, so I say "won't"). Waiting a year to change the oil, is just too long for normal oil.
One more quick quip. DO NOT use K&N oil filters. From personal experience, they have the tendancy to collapse internally during "heavy duty" usage. We cut a few open and saw this first hand. I don't trust them anymore, as they caused oil starvation on a $20,000 race motor. Switched to a delco filter, never saw the problem again.
