: More Beef on the 19" factory rim?

Once I get broken in, and the tires start melting away, can we put a larger series on the factory rim?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Why would you want to?

Depends on the tire. Go to a tire manufacturer's web site and you will see tables like this, that show max and min wheel width (Rim Width Range) for a particular tire: Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 @ Tire Rack. (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Michelin&model=Pilot+Sport+PS2&tirePageLocQty=)

I'm thinking to save money by not having to purchase new rims.

What width are the stock 19s? staggered?

What width are the stock 19s? staggered?unfortunately they are 8" all around, so not much of an option to add more tire than there as they are too narrow a rim already.

Oh, wow, I thought someone was talking about putting a 285 on them, maybe another thread. I didnt think the stockers would be wide enough for a 285, haha.

Okay, let's clear this up a lil bit.

A larger "series" is a taller tire.

Are you talking about a WIDER tire, or a TALLER tire?

^^ good question, I missed that. I just assumed he meant wider, not sure WHY he would want a taller tire?!?!

255's will be as wide as you can go on an 8" rim. I was looking at 265's but they require a 9" rim. I was hoping for some aftermarket 8.5" rims and being able to put 265's on the back.

Go 9.5 or 10. I am sure the fenderwell will handle it!

I think the only way to do it and not look goofy is to have the wheels widened. I plan on widening my 19's over the winter when I've got snow tires (and wheels) on. I haven't measured yet though to see how wide I can go. I think 285's would look good, but to keep the same relation between the sidewall and the rim (so the tire doesn't bulge) the factory wheel would need an additional 1.5".

I agree on not spending huge $$ on wheels. My personal opinion is that the factory 19's look as good as any aftermarket wheel out there.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this possibility. :)

Yes, go for wider rims. If you up the HP, the 245's and 255's will not keep traction. To move up to 275's and 285's, the smallest rim you would want is 9, more if you want the staggar. Good plan to evaluate this as you replace rubber.

Threads a little old but the wheel widening is somethinng I'm interested in doing. Looked at a couple of sites that offer this service and a copuple mentuion that they typically widen to the inside of the wheel. I haven't looked but I'm sure that the clearance is there for an extra 1.5" of rim. My question is would the backspacing be fine left alone , I know the actual backspacing is going to be different due to the added width but would the actual mounting surface have to be moved or is it as straight forward as just adding the extra 1.5" to the inside?

Usually you need to run a spacer if you have a factory rim widened because it adds 1.5" of back spacing to the rim.

I've heard of people doing this but it was a few years ago and I can't remember where they had it done. I'll look and see with I find out.

Yeah, that's one of the sites I was lookin at. I guess I'm lookin at it to simply in thinking that the additional 1.5" added to the wheel would only effect inside clearance.

Does anyone have a handle on what this would cost?

Weldcraft narrowed a set of WS6 wheels for me years ago on my GTO. They held up & I drive like a maniac. I'd trust them to do another set if I found a design that I liked.

About 2 years ago they charged about $100 to narrow my wheels. Since they didn't have to add any of their metal, that seems like a good deal. I've seen other people post on LS1GTO that widening wheels was in the neighborhood of $250/ea. depending on how much widening you want done. Don't forget, if you live far away, you also have to pay to ship them to & from Weldcraft.
