: Royal Purple/Mobil 1/Castrol/Quaker State
VENOM 05-16-2008, 04:03 PM Just wondering what everyone plans on using when they change their oil. I have always used Mobil 1, but my dad uses Royal Purple in his showcar. I have seen the claims of Royal Purple on increases horsepower but I dont know if they are true or not. Then there is Q horsepower, but who knows. So what do you use and why?
h3llphyre 05-16-2008, 04:33 PM Rotella
VENOM 05-16-2008, 05:16 PM Im surprised Royal Purple is not a fan favorite

Question is... Do you want real syn or the fake stuff?
Rotella 5W40 is a GREAT choice but it too is a fake syn. I use it in my bikes with GREAT success.
racerns 05-16-2008, 05:20 PM God no, not an oil thread.
Neil
Rob Moser 05-16-2008, 06:00 PM Mobil 1 in car as we speak. Took mortgage to afford!!! Even...with my local Pontiac dealer charge of $7.48 (I provided the oil and Mobil 1 filter).
RRM
granatelli 05-16-2008, 06:47 PM I just took the car in to the dealership and had the oil changes at 600 miles. I brought my own K&N oil filter with me and they charged me $29 for 8.8 quarts. Not bad. At the next oil change, I am going with Mobil 1 and will continue to use the K&N oil filter.
VENOM 05-16-2008, 07:02 PM thats not bad for almost 9 quarts of oil

ROI. Better then Mobil1/Castrol, but cheaper. Even if its marginally better, its still a better option.
G8 Ray 05-17-2008, 06:30 AM ROI. Better then Mobil1/Castrol, but cheaper. Even if its marginally better, its still a better option.
Can you give some more information on why it's a better option?

I'll try and find the actual data, showing how all the different oils match up...
VENOM 05-19-2008, 09:46 PM Sucks that this thing takes 9 quarts and Mobil 1 5W30 is like $7 a quart
Atlas 05-19-2008, 10:23 PM royal purple all the way...
G8GT594 05-19-2008, 10:36 PM First choice is Royal purple
Second choice would be Mobil 1
VENOM 05-20-2008, 07:19 AM I was lookin on ebay and Amazon trying to find a good deal on oil. You can order like 12 quarts of royal purple or mobil 1, and its actually cheaper because its free shipping and you dont pay tax
GXPaycheck 05-20-2008, 08:51 AM Anybody use Amsoil?
VENOM 05-20-2008, 08:58 AM never heard of it
lonewolfz28 05-20-2008, 09:02 AM Anybody use Amsoil?
Haven't been able to find it locally.:dunno: I wasn't going to shop online for oil when Pepboys had Royal Purple available.:wink2:
If they'd had Amsoil I would've snagged that instead.
4gasem 05-20-2008, 09:25 AM Amsoil is a pretty popular oil for bikes and is readily available here. They'll setup just about anyone to sell it. It's a bit like Amway... lol It's not bad stuff but Redline or RP gets my nod.
Rue_G8GT 05-20-2008, 10:28 AM When I get mine I will be using Mobil 1. I use it on my Stang and I'm satisfied with it. I would give Amsoil a try but it's not available here and Shell is crazy expensive over here. I got connections to where I can get Mobil 1 for cheap so I'll just stick with that.
VENOM 05-20-2008, 11:03 AM hook me up wit some lol
Atlas 05-20-2008, 11:14 AM amsoil is decent stuff but is very hard to find...
Shaffe 05-20-2008, 01:37 PM mobil 1 here, great oil, and readily available. best price ive gotten on it is at Sam's Club.
Rue_G8GT 05-20-2008, 01:45 PM hook me up wit some lol
I'd be glad to but the shipping costs are going to be painful. :drink: Lol! Besides I'm not sure if it's legal to ship oil overseas.
Like you've mentioned though Ebay is a great place to look for some oil for cheap. I used Ebay to compare the price from what I will get from my connection. I still get it cheaper but Ebay is still cheaper than anywhere else.

They ship it from Iraq and Saudi Arabia all the time... :wink2:

Find a distributer: http://www.amsoil.com/dealerlocatorresults/ I have 3 in a 25 mile radius!I've been reading a lot about Amsoil lately and it is an interesting oil but I'm going to stick with what I can get right off of the shelf. All I have to do is go to my local autoparts store, order Mobil 1 and get my special :quoties: discount :quoties: for it. If Amsoil was available locally I would definitely jump on it but as of now it'll be too much of a hassle. Should be interesting for you guys though. :wink2: In fact I'm going to ask the store if they have access to Amsoil. They seem to have access to everything else I've asked for in the past.

sccaGTO 05-22-2008, 07:44 PM Like my GTO, I would plan to use Mobil 1. If it's good enough for factory fill-ups on all of Detroit's high powered cars, then it's good enough for my ride.
Red-Rocket 05-22-2008, 08:42 PM I wonder if the dealer will honor the 9.99 oil change coupon they sent me?
I have 800 miles on my G8 and will be changing the oil this weekend. I will put dino oil in it for the first change.
Torqued 05-23-2008, 11:24 AM Royal Purple for me. I ran the racing RP21 in my 98 LS1 for over 90,000 miles. I switched to the "regular" Royal Purple at that time and put another 70,000 miles on the engine before selling it. My oil change intervals were between 8000 and 10000 miles with a filter change in the middle. Buy it in the 5 gallon containers to save a few bucks.
JLockhart 05-23-2008, 02:34 PM Mobile1 is plenty good enough for me, although I believe Royal Purple is better. Personally, I go 20k on a new vehicle before switching to synthetic. I've heard the new engines basically break in within the first few miles. But I want the engine to get nice and loose before switching to synthetic. I've noticed that on long-term testing, most of the new cars run quicker in the 1/4 mile at 40k miles than when they were new.
wreckwriter 06-08-2008, 08:30 AM Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have a question that isn't resolved. I'm a firm believer that Royal Purple is the top of the oil food chain but everything I read says its not actually GM approved for use in our engines. Any possibility of warranty issues? I tend to be extremely distrustful of car dealers so I can just see them trying something like that to weasel out of a repair.
This probably doesn't hold any merit without proof but I've "heard" that GM has neglected warranties on vehicles if you do not take it to the dealer for service. Meaning it has to go through there system of checks and balances in order for it to be covered under warranty if something was to happen.
The true way to know if Royal Purple is acceptable is to check which standards does it meet. The owner manual states what oil the engine should have. Does not state it by name but by requirements of the oil.
Gfrom8 06-08-2008, 03:13 PM Mobil 1 synth 5w30=$75.00 diy oil change.
DragoonRaven 06-08-2008, 04:27 PM What, no mention of Valvoline? It's my fave...
At least nobody said Pennzoil/Quaker State. That stuff is garbage.
My dealer gave me 6 free oil changes of Mobil One

It happened to me... 37000 miles and my timing belt went out on my Honda powered Vue Redline. They said they would have covered it, if I had brought it to them for oil changes.:slap:
I have run synthetic since 6000 miles on it.:whine: I DO beat it pretty hard but still... 37000 miles?:judge:

Not true for any of the GM vehicles I've owned. It seems I've had at least one in my garage since about '92.
SD had posted the GM list of approved oils in another thread. He also indicated the test requirement was a better flow at low temps. than what is typical.
I'm too lazy to search for the thread though. Have fun searching.:wink2:
_GTO_ 06-09-2008, 09:57 PM GM always recommend mobile 1 for LS engines
lonewolfz28 06-09-2008, 10:43 PM The only oil spec I've seen listed for the G8 is a non-synthetic spec. Royal Purple and Mobil 1 both have a synthetic spec that meets and exceeds the G8 spec requirements. They'd have hell to pay to try to use that as a reason to deny a warrantee claim.
4gasem 06-17-2008, 03:51 PM A tidbit of info... http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/autos_content_landing_pages/586/the-3000-mile-oil-change-myth/;_ylc=X3oDMTE0cnVqb3Q4BF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEc2VjA2ZwLXRv ZGF5BHNsawMzMDAwLW9pbA--
lonewolfz28 06-17-2008, 08:12 PM I got my free oil change from the dealer just before 3000 miles. After flogging it from AZ to NY and back I changed the oil and filter with RP and a Purolator filter just short of 12,000 miles. According to the oil life monitor I still had 22% oil life left before I reset it.
I still don't feel comfortable changing the oil at more than 10,000 mile intervals. But I doubt I'll be following the standard 3000 mile window either. Especially at 9 qts per change.

Im with you on that! My 96 z28 I always changed at 3k, but it only had a capacity of 4.5 quarts with the stock filter and 5.0 with a Napa Gold unit. Now that it is upped to 9.0 quarts with a Napa Gold its getting changed a 5k intervals.
