: GT vs SRT
I am looking to purchase a rear wheel drive, v8 sedan, so I went test driving today. I went by the local Dodge house where they had a 2007 300c SRT8. Then I went by Pontiac and test drove a G8 GT.
Honest impressions...
SRT8. Huge big car. Drives like a huge big car. Overboosted steering, litle bit of body roll... but punch it and it just tears those rear tires loose. Breaks were awsome.
Interior... very nice really. Not quite luxuary car but close. I love an analogue clock. Leather was excellent, seats were extremely supportive.
Exhaust note was great, wheels were nice, exterior looked classic. A really nice car.
G8 GT. Large car, drives like a smaller one. The shorter wheelbase was immediately obvious with the tighter turn in. There was a little more body roll than I like. The engine is nowhere near as brutal as the hemi. Breaks were very good.
Interior... ummm yeah... not as nice as the 300... dash felt better in the gm, switchgear was a wash... and I hate orange/red instrument lighting. Seats were not quite as good. Ride quality is markedly better.
Exhaust note... not there... wheels were terrible... exerior is... muscular whilst still classy.
Conclusions... Everything else being equal I would probably get the 300... before you flay me remember two things... one I am a long long long term GM fan (I currently own two 2007 fullsize trucks, a'lance and silverado) and two, all things are NOT equal.
See the used 300 cost as much as the G8. The G8 has a better warranty. I have no idea ow to fix overboosted steering but I know tons about how to "overclock" an LS series motor. The 300 uses premium, the G8 doesn't. The rims and tires are an easy fix. Body roll is an easy fix. The G8 gets better gas mileage...
The G8 has a bunch of flaws... but they are ones I can fix. They are the kind of thing that will keep me interested in the car. I look forward to trying new wheels and suspension... and relacing the oil and battery gauges.
So... order me up one in black with leather, hold the sunroof, hold the sports package. And when I am done, I will have a car that kicks as hard as that 300 and is uniquely mine.

888GT#31 05-18-2008, 12:52 AM Good choice! Now go out there and help start up the aftermarket! Enjoy it.
Ryan M 05-18-2008, 01:56 AM You really cant compare a G8 GT to a SRT8 300C or Charger
Now if it were the G8 GXP and SRT8 that is more equal but either way the G8 is well worth the price tag.

Apparently you can. :wink2:
I don't think the interior, build quality, features, etc is going to be significantly different between GT and GXP, at least to the extent that the GT is out of the same category. Suspension, brakes, and power should be better on the GXP, but again, the GT surpasses the R/T in these categories and the magazines found it useful to compare at least some aspects of the GT to the SRT8.

Nice write-up. If you are looking for a daily driver, the G8 cannot be beat for value. I doubt many SRT8's are daily drivers. But, if you are looking for a unique garage car, the GXP or SRT8 Charger are worth a look. BTW, suspension is much stiffer on the ChargerSRT than the 300SRT, pushing the Charger to .89 on the skidpad (C5 territory). Also, only a few thousand made per year, so uniqueness comes with the territory, along with 425 pavement shredding horsepower. Good searching.

You just described my car. :)
Welcome brother.:gears:
LongDriving 05-20-2008, 12:08 PM I was really interested in an SRT8 but I couldn't get over the poor gas mileage. The G8's 24MPG highway looked much nicer.
IXLR8 05-20-2008, 12:20 PM I traded in a Charger Daytona for the G8 GT. I have driven every one of the Dodge SRT Vehicles including the Viper on a variety of tracks. You can too for $500, it's called the SRT Track Experience, and you get to go for free if you buy an SRT. I was very impressed with all of them, even the Jeep Cherokee SRT-8 0-60 in 5 sec, wet or dry pavement (4-wheel drive). The SRT's get crappy mileage, and you get stuck with the Gas Guzzler Tax when you buy it. But all of them are darn fine vehicles. The G8 GT is much better value. I won't comment on the GXP, since it has not been released yet.
L8RG8R 05-20-2008, 04:30 PM This thread should really compare the GT to the R/T. Same price point, same league. Advantage: G8 GT. Of course Dodge is scrambling to improve their R/T now (a nice effect of competition).
The big SRT-8 Vehicles are very nice. They are also very expensive, or at least too expensive for my budget. The G8 GT stock is a very respectable car with good power, looks, handling and braking- All for under $30k (Pontiac loves saying that... $29,995). Add some performance mods, you are starting to nip at the heels of a stock SRT-8. It won't have the same status per se as the SRT though. For that, enter the GXP. The GXP and SRT-8s will be in the same league with the edge likely going to the GXP.
JAWDRPNG8 05-20-2008, 04:57 PM Ive raced 2 Srt8s so far....ONe i was neck and neck with on the freeway. up to about 95mph than HE let off - his looked stock..and didnt really pull from me at all....
The other car was pretty modded and walked away from me....probally 6 cars from a 60 to `130 mph run up 80 in sactown area...
Mines all stock ..The Srt8s are alot more in cost....I think for less than $1000 in mods...I will be able to pull on an SRT8
OH at the Roseville CA automall
Dodge had a Daytona with the regular Hemi..not the SRT8 for $46K plus...I was like WTF!!
it looks pretty cool..but $46K for a NON SRT8.....I laughed so hard at the kid trying to sell it to my buddy....( just showing a newbie his options for a new car)
Blackdevil77 05-20-2008, 07:50 PM How would the G8 GT with the Vector tune(Roto-Fab intake and ECM tune) compare to a stock SRT8?
GeorgeInNePa 05-20-2008, 07:51 PM How would the G8 GT with the Vector tune(Roto-Fab intake and ECM tune) compare to a stock SRT8?
It would come down to the driver. I'd put money on it.
Blackdevil77 05-20-2008, 08:08 PM It would come down to the driver. I'd put money on it.
So basically your saying they would both be about the same? If so, thats awsome!

Yep
The GXP and SRT-8s will be in the same league
The SRT8 vs. GXP challenge will be interesting. Here are the facts:
1: The G8GT edges out the R/T by 3/10's in the qtr mile.
2: The GXP has 11% more horsepower than the G8GT.
3: The SRT has 25% more horsepower than the R/T.
Not a done deal either way, aye?
GeorgeInNePa 05-20-2008, 08:38 PM So basically your saying they would both be about the same? If so, thats awsome!
Yes.
Look at it this way.
SRT 425/425 stock at the >flywheel<
G8 361/385 stock at the flywheel, PLUS an extra 40+HP AT THE WHEELS with the VMS tune and Roto CAI.
SRT is heavier. G8 has the better transmission.
ToneyTone 05-20-2008, 10:10 PM I think this is the right comparison because the real world numbers put the performance of both cars at just about even.
G8 Ray 05-21-2008, 06:10 AM Saturday while I coming up to a stop sign in town, I noticed a R/T coming from the other direction. We came to a complete stop, and it seemed like our cars were just sitting there checking each other out. I'm sure we will see each other in town going in the same direction soon. :)
theun4gven 05-21-2008, 08:55 AM It was kind of pointed out in the original post, but it's important to note that the SRTs lose the spectacular unlimited drivetrain warranty and only get covered by the 3/36. Not to mention that new they start $14k over the G8.
kewlv8 05-21-2008, 09:31 AM Not to mention that new they start $14k over the G8.
Actually, the Charger-SRT8 base price, including GG Tax, is $37,800 . The fact that most owners option them out to the max is just a function of them having too much change rolling around in their pockets...:drink:

Whoops, probably should have mentioned somewhere that I was talking about the 300. :slap:
But you are entirely correct.

There is no comparison. The G8GT whips the R/T hands down.
Drove a 300C Hemi...the car has incredibly slow steering response, have to crank it an extra half turn to cut the same line as a G8 Feels huge as a tractor trailer. Slower than a G8 as well. Interior looked fundamentally cheaper than the G8, especially the dash which looks like it is from a K car. Mercedes made sure that the car would not compete in any way with a M-B. chrysler has tried to fix this with a wood package...which was v nice but looked like an aftermaket add-on. I like the textures of the G8 interior better... more cutting edge. Also like the doors better...more normal height.
Of course the exterior is a matter of taste...but I am with Lutz on the quasi BMW look with Jag stance vs. the 300s faux M-B that looks a little chunky...and is getting a little long in the tooth.
So you have to compare the G8 to an SRT 8 IMHO to give the Chrysler some points. But I bet a tuned G8 would take a stock SRT8 and save you a pile in the process.
kmag53 05-27-2008, 02:06 PM Having previously owned a 300 SRT8 and now of course owning a brand new G8..I can say with no hesitation what so ever that I would take the G8 everytime. Don't get me wrong the 300 was a nice car but it is a very bulky large car and frankly feels like it. The G8 is much more athletic in the way it feels and handles. Interior wise the G8 is also nicer and at least for me much more comfortable. As far as quickness the SRT was quicker but didnt really feel it because of that bulk issue again. All in all the G8 is a winner for me.
