: In Search of 3" Exhaust System
Chipless 05-19-2008, 09:26 AM Seems my factory 2-1/4" exhaust has become quite the restriction, but I haven't been able to source a 3" exhaust sytem for this car yet. Everyone is 'working on it', but no one seems to actually have a system I can purchase.
Does anyone have any good ideas or contacts for a guy without a lot of patience in this area? :p
HANNlBAL KING 05-19-2008, 10:31 AM You could find a speed shop that will custom fabricate you one if you don't want to wait.
Mr. Sandog 05-19-2008, 10:59 AM Magnaflow built a prototype 3" system that performed no better than the 2.5" system, and as a result, they are not building a 3" system.
Richard (oxidzer) is a top-rate engineer and if he said the 3" produced nothing more than the 2.5" did (except for unpleasant noise) I would take his word for it.

I completely agree with him for naturally aspirated applications. But for those of us with power adders, 3" will be the way to go. :)
racerns 05-19-2008, 02:49 PM What is your ultimate horsepower goal for the car? I would guess a good 2.5" system would support 500 - 600 rwhp. You must be shooting for something a little more.

Yes. ;)

You plan on swapping out the transmission? She can't take much abuse IMO

I don't plan to drag race the car, so I'm hoping that extends the tranny life. If and when it croaks anyways, I'll do whatever I need to do. ;)

Then I would talk with him directly to discuss your needs. :)

PM sent. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
h3llphyre 05-19-2008, 04:44 PM Any custom exhaust shop worth a damn should have the means of mandrel bending 3" and doing a custom setup.

I was just quoted 300 to 400 for a 3" down at my local Midas.
I'm not going with that, but just a FYI
Chipless 05-23-2008, 01:19 PM I've had almost no luck on this so far. :whine:
Corsa has put the G8 development on hold until the third quarter. :(
Magnaflow has a test system only, and no current plans to build a 3".
SLP is developing a system, but it will most likely be 2-1/2" as well.
I can only find one shop in Ohio who can build a custom 3" setup with mandrel bending. They want $2,200 and the wait is more than a month. :slap:
I'm now starting to contact the Australians. :aus_flag:
If anyone has any good suggestions please let me know.
Mr. Sandog 05-23-2008, 01:25 PM I seem to remember reading that the only time you need a dual 3" system is if your HP is north of 1200HP. Since that falls way out of the specs of what most people are after, I am having trouble understanding why you are expecting vendors that cater to 70-80% of the market to be interested in building a 3" system. You should be thinking custom from the get go.

I never said that I EXPECTED anyone to cater to my needs. I was just HOPING there would be a simple solution. I'm sure if I knew the right person, this could get done in a day for a reasonable amount of cash. :)

Understood. There are only a handful of shops in CA with mandrel-bending machinery and capability, so it is expensive to go custom. I would imagine it is much the same elsewhere. Good Luck!!!
justoneofmyhoes 05-27-2008, 03:40 PM With a twin turbo set up a 2.5" system would not be adequate. Garrett engineers have shown that any power level above 250 HP on a twin turbo system it is harmed by smaller exhausts. Turbos crave high velocity prior to the turbo but free flow past the turbo. On a 6.0 with twins a 3.5" exhaust would be more accurate of the flow needs.
I too will be looking for a 3" system next year when I start planning an APS twin turbo G8 build.

The 3" Magnaflow prototype should serve a TT G8 well. The exhaust demands of a turbocharger system are different than an N/A system of equivilant HP output. Supercharged applications will exhibit near N/A demands from exhaust while the manifold and inlet pipes of a turbocharged system are very unique in that velocity and thermal properties have a good deal of consideration over just flow volume.
Let us all know how it does when you get it.
