Most likely you need to tighten down your gas cap. Push it in good and click it like 6-7 times. Happened to me a few times....if that doesnt work head on over to your dealership.

Yep, almost definitely the gas cap. Somehow, over time they tend to loosen on their own. A very well know problem. Some have gotten replacement caps. After you re-tighten it it will take maybe 7 or 8 trips before the check engine light will go off. I'm trying to get into a regular habit of checking the gas cap to avoid the dreaded check engine light. Unfortunately I forgot and it came back on yesterday for the third or fourth time. :(

Push the blue OnStar button, they can read the code remotely and tell you what it is....

Also, if it is the cap. Don't tighten it so the light will go off.
Instead go to the dealer with it on. Tell them what onstar said.
Get a new cap. Say goodbye to the problem for good.

Gas cap is a common issue with these cars.

BTW I have you beat, CEL at 461 miles (mine was the gas cap).

Is there really that big of a problem with the gas cap? Or are people just not putting them on tight enough?

Over 20K miles and no problems with the gas cap.

Just wondering. I mean this cap screws in for a bit before it clicks. My '04 Chevy truck clicks just after you make a 1/4 turn. In the old days, you screw it in till it stopped.

Don't use the little hook on the door to hang the gas cap. That will wedge the vent spring assembly inside the cap into an open position and cause a leak. Instead use the hook to hang the plastic wire that attaches the cap to the car.

You can also reseat the valve with a pen or something.

Im guessing it has something to do with the temperature. Metal can expand and contract in extremes. The couple times it has happened to me was when the temp was cold for several days and then we rapidly warmed up. Typical for TX weather of course.

Could be. WE're pretty even out here with our temps.

As they say in Texas, if you don't like the weather, wait a minute, it will change. Yep, spent 19 years there in Fort Worth.

Yes there is, I haven't had any problem with mine either, but many others have. If you get out of the V6 area you will find that there are many other things about the G8.

I had this very strange issue. Out of all my years using gas caps, this was a first.
The cap would actually back itself out and indeed be loose.
I was aware of the problem by reading up on the forums.
Needles to say I was conscious at every fill up to make sure I wasn't cross-threading or undertightening.
Low and behold the code kept popping up on me.

Yeah I screw mine until it clicks 9 times just to be sure.

12k miles thus far, hot and cold... no issues yet. I twist it on and keep going untill I hear the first click. Then I put pressure against it and try again. Normally it turns a bit more before the click happens again, but this time I turn it about a quarter turn while its clicking to make sure. Stays put thats for sure.

The new-style replacement gas cap fixes the self-loosening-gas-cap problem permanently. Dealer replaced mine under warranty a long time ago. No check engine lights since then.

I've had that damn code 4 times now with only 7000 miles on the car.
When you call Onstar they tell you to only click the cap 2 times.
Other then this it's been a good car.

Everyone I need help. I am mechanically illiterate so I need advice. My CEL came on at 4682 miles and the dealer told me I have a cracked cylinder or cylinder head (not really sure what the difference is). He said it probably has been that way from day one (we had a one time issue of white smoke with horrible burning smell coming from exhaust the day we drove it home from the dealer but they never found anything wrong) and he said it is most likely a manufacturer defect in the part. Currently the dealer is taking the engine apart to replace the parts and then will put the engine back together. My question is - will this most likely mean I will have mechanical issues with this car going forward? If so, does anyone know if asking them for a new engine would be a good idea (co-worker suggested this). Like I said, I am mechanically inept so I need an engine that works!
Thanks
Alisa

Sometimes weird things happen, but I doubt this means you have a lemon. You have a lot of warranty left so enjoy the car and dont worry.

Thanks I would be really bummed if something happened to the car that I have been in love with ever since they unveiled it at the auto show in 2007. I put myself in the poor house buying it last year (planned to wait until 2011 to buy one but GM chose to ditch Pontiac but kept Buick - makes no sense!).

If the dealer does the job right = you shouldn't have any further problems with the engine.
If you do = pester GM for a new motor and an extended warranty.
If you have continual problems - then go for lemon law or buyback (had to go the latter route for my first '04 GTO, so I know how you feel at this point in time...)

Thanks All. I got my baby back yesterday and so far so good. One of these days I will make my father proud and actually learn how the engine works instead of simply knowing it has the power to do what I need it to!

I had my alternator go out at 8k miles. No worries since it was covered under warranty. These random things happen and thats why we get a great warranty to cover them - I wouldn't sweat it.

my light has come on 3 times since I have it new 1/23/10 (now just over 5k on it). First time, gas cap and it was replaced by the dealer. Second time, OnStar said it was the same code. Dealer said it was me not tightening it properly they cleared the code, this time I took it in said keep it until you figure it out. They are now replacing the gas tank, which had a small hair line crack in it and the fuel tube which was not seated when built. (they say) so, I hope after another week in the shop Ill have it back soon. I miss my G8. never take what a dealer says as gospel always do your own research and tell them to do a complete check on it.

I had the same thing happen to my car within the first week of ownership.

http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13496

When all was said and done, I had the car for a week, then it was in the shop getting the gas tank replaced the entire following week. I was able to escalate the claim up the chain in GM Customer Service 1-800 number and work a deal on a 2 year maintenance package, free of charge, for my inconvenience.

It takes so long to replace the tank because they need to drop the exhaust, heat shields, and entire rear suspension (differential, springs, 4-link, etc) to get to it.

It's been over a year with my replacement tank, no problems whatsoever. Good luck.
