: Smokers kit installation?

Just bought my liquid red GT last week:). I am loving her!! I called Pontiac this morning and ordered an ashtray for $70.00. That's fine, but they want an arm, leg and part of my foot to install it, even though he said it only takes .02 of an hour. Anybody know how hard it is to install it? Or does anybody know where I can get installation instructions online? I have a sinking feeling that tomorrow morning I will be at the dealership waiting forever behind all the oil changes everyone is getting holding my breathe on final cost. Any ideas would be appreciated:)

Use the window and a lighter...

-100. Litter caused by cigarette butts is one of my pet peeves. Not to mention that folks in Florida, California and West Texas do not appreciate the ignition source for grass and / or forest fires.

Do you have some pics? As far as what it will take to install it, we might be able to give you a better idea if we know what it looks like. Does it install in the cubby in front of the shifter? Does that cubby need to be removed?

Um, new formulated cigarettes extinguish themselves in about 5 seconds. Its federal law now, so that's not really an issue.

I always snub out a cigarette (cherry goes out the window, its biodegradable), and the filter goes in the cup holder, until I get to my destination, where it is throw away.

Not worth $70+installation for the "smokers kit". I've NEVER used an ashtray in a car.

Here's the deal, I don't flick my smoke out the window or throw any part of it out the window. It's my responsibility to make sure I do not cause a fire here in sunny California and to be really honest here, I don't like the idea of littering or bugging the heck out of the driver behind or to the side of me by flicking MY junk at them. With that being said I am trying to do the responsibe thing here and just get the ashtray because thanks to the cup holders being so far back I can't put a smokers cup there and reach it.
To the very nice person that asked about where the ashtray goes, it goes underneath my audio system next to my power outlet. I am thinking that piece might just pop out to be able to get the new peice with ashtray in. You are right, after looking again all above still applies but yep, it's in front of the shifter. That black cubby peice. Thanks

Interesting. I did not know that.

Unfortunately, most smokers are not that responsible. I appreciate those who make the effort. Thanks :)

I generally notice that it's usually former military members that tend to keep their butts and dispose of them properly.

I suppose most of that is due to "Area Beautification" that tends to be detailed out so often in the military. :wink2:

Interesting. I did not know that.

Its annoying. You stop to talk to someone and the cigarette goes out. You have to relight it. Any pack of cigs with an FSC next to the barcode on the pack, is "Fire Safe Cigarettes". The taste changed as well.

Personally, I am Not a member of the military nor have I ever been. I just feel like if it's my cigarette it's my problem:) I have been a smoker for a long time and I just find an ashtray to be my friend, not my window. It bugs me because I came on to ask about how to install or any ideas on how to install the ashtray, instead I get use your window comments. Are you kidding me? No wonder people hate smokers! It's bad enough that I blow the smoke in the air, but to throw it out the window? Any part of the cigarette, is not too cool with me. Okay, I'm done venting now:). LOL.

+1. I hate riding in smokers' cars. AND if you really love your G8 GT then you wouldn't subject its interior to your habit. I do give you major kudos for not flicking them out the window though, thanks for actually caring. On my commute it seems that almost daily an inconsiderate smoker flicks a cig out their window and it glances off my hood, bumper or windshield before making its way to the ground.

Quit smoking - the money you'll save from kicking the habit will make you as loaded as Spyral. Then you'll be swimming in dough and wouldn't even ask the labor rate before getting something installed by the dealer ;)

fat people dont get lung cancer as easily as smokers
fat people dont get emphezema like smokers (spelt wrong I know)
fat people dont get gum disease as easily like smokers
fat people dont have to have a little box help them talk
fat people dont have tooth decay as quickly

yes they have high colestrol, blood pressure and higher risk of diabetes and heart disease, but smoking is much worse for you then eating fast food. and if you smoke around others, second hand smoke is even worse. eating a burger in front of your friend wont hurt him. Smoking should be banned since it is a poison. Lol I am done since this will turn into a war!!!!!!!!!1:pir_flag:

http://www.gmaccessorieszone.com/typo3temp/pics/fdf659a1c3.jpg

From the looks of things, you might have to remove part of the trim on the center console. There appear to be two screw tabs on the bottom. I haven't looked at my center console to confirm my best guess as to how it installs.

BTW, she didn't ask for advice on her vice.

This should not take more that 5 to 10min to install if it is like the GTO you have to remove the bezel around the radio remove the cubby plug in the new lighter and install the ash tray where the cubby came out from but if you have no tools or don't know how to use them it does not matter how easy it is to do. If you try to do it be very careful and don't break the trim.

Some info on what you asked for not comments on what you like to do

Its very easy to install, I know because I took my dash apart installing a bluetooth kit. Basically you pull up the center console, and then there are two screws holding down the storage tray/power outlet. Remove it by lifting it up and pulling back, unplug the 12V outlet, then plug in the new ash tray and screw it down, and just reinstall the center console. It should take about 1-3 minutes to do.

Actually if you look the in manual there is a section about unlocking the shifter, and it describes how access a switch which is just in front of the storage tray under the cover.

BTW smoking is bad for you. I bought my last car 10 years ago, it was used by a smoker for 3 years and even after 10 years of cleaning the inside there was still a layer of cigarette smoke all over the dash. Do the next owner a favor and don't smoke in your car, it will never come out.

There is a matching three pronged plug the kit plugs into. I found it when working on installing a BT kit. The connector for the lighter 3 pin is attached to the right side of the radio. When you have the old accessory plug/tray out, you can feel it on the right side just under the radio , its securely attached to the frame. I think the 2 pin accessory plug wires are not thick enough to safely power a lighter. It might be worth looking into, you dont want to risk burning down the car when the wires melt.

Most interesting! Thanks much. It is attached to the radio itself or just below it? I assume it is accessible by removing the lower trim panel on the passenger side?

Just stick your hand on the right side and feel for it when you have the old tray out, or take off the lower trim on the passenger side of the console. The 2 pin plug for the accessory plug also attaches to the 3 pin connector. just follow the wires for about 2".

+1 it seems that every non smoker has to give their opinion based on former bad experiences they've encountered. some of us "smokers" actually do realize the consequences of our actions and do realize how others around us don't appreciate the second hand smoke, so we do what we can to accommidate. I myself don't smoke in my G8, but if someone wants to, STFU and let them. I also can't stand when someone flicks their butt out the windows and it glances off my car, but I don't assume all smokers do it. it's just madening to see all the ignorant condescending comments in here directed towards smokers, save them for the people you catch being rude, don't assume that we all are.
