: Aftermarket Bluetooth installed
SparcV 05-21-2008, 09:08 PM So today I installed the Parrot 3200LS kit in my G8. I bought an ISO adapter cable for a BMW that used the same connectors that our head unit uses. I did not need to modify the harness and just needed to tap into two wires. The integration is perfect. I wired the mute cable to the same wire the onstar module uses, so when I use or get a call the radio mutes and says voice in, just like onstar, and the onstar works like normal, just not at the same time the bluetooth is in use. I didn't take any pictures during the install, I was too consumed trying to figure out how to take the dash apart. The hardest part was running the mic wire up to the driver side sun visor. I'll post pictures tomorrow of the completed setup. I have a second harness if anyone is interested.
Stingpac 05-21-2008, 09:17 PM That's pretty impressive .. what was the cost of the kit plus installation ???
SparcV 05-21-2008, 09:22 PM I spend $180 for the Parrot kit, $60 for the harness and installation was free. I installed it myself in about 3 hours cause I had to figure things out as I went along.
Attorneyguy 05-21-2008, 09:52 PM Why couldn't they do this at the factory to make it standard? Ya know?
banditelvis721 05-21-2008, 10:08 PM does it also tell you what number is calling? and does it sync your contacts??
thanks
Mr. Sandog 05-22-2008, 12:14 AM Check out <link to NSV edited>, they have the Parrot Car Kits and the Harnesses in bundle pricing, cheaper than anywhere else with a 2 year warranty.
Check out the "car kit demos" on their home page, it's a nice flash animation of the car kits...good stuff!
Let me guess, you're just being nice, and you have nothing to do with the company, right?
:drink:
SparcV 05-22-2008, 06:08 AM Well, I got my stuff from <non-supporting vendor>. There are several different parrot units with different abilities. The one I have is the 3200LS Color, which has a color screen that shows callers pictures when they call in, if your phone supports that. I'm using it with my iPhone and all the features work, its syncs the contacts I have, but I have not figured out how to get the caller id picts to work just yet.
Attorneyguy 05-22-2008, 07:52 AM Please post pics when you get a chance!

YES! I am VERY interested in this. Also, where did you get the connector? Same vendor as the parrot?
SparcV 05-22-2008, 10:23 AM The harness I used is one for a 3-series BMW, if you goto the parrot site and lookup their car adapters, select BMW and then a 3 Series (E46) 2001-2005, its that cable (ac000006aa). The harness I got from installer.com which is actually from <non supporting vendor> is slightly different, the switched 12V source needs to be tapped into a switched source, I used the 12V accessory power under the radio, and for mute I tapped into the onstar mute line. I didnt have to cut any of wires so its fully reversible.
I'm also suspecting that using line out of the Parrot I could splice into the audio in from the OnStar module instead and then you wouldn't even need a harness, just a couple of wiretaps from Radio Shack.
h3llphyre 05-22-2008, 10:39 AM Thanks for the info. makes sense that the same connector is for a BMW, as they love to use Blaupunkt.
SparcV 05-22-2008, 12:50 PM I've attached three pictures. When in use the radio says voice in just like it does when you use onstar.
Attorneyguy 05-22-2008, 01:43 PM By installing this, I assume you have disabled the OnStar Nav function that is offered?

When you use the Parrot BT kit it overrides all the audio from the head unit, so you wont hear the voice prompts. When not in use aka on a call, onstar works normally. For me its not an issue, I wont ever use the onstar nav, I found it to be very poor at getting to my destination. I tried it during the trial period and I was getting lost all the time. For nav I use a tomtom one, that fits perfectly under the radio.
Attorneyguy 05-22-2008, 03:24 PM Where can I get this installed at? (since I do not want to do it myself).
Also, are there competing products I should be looking at?
What are about warranty issues if I do this?
h3llphyre 05-22-2008, 03:36 PM Screw that, how do I tap into the OnStar microphone. I want to hide that stuff.

I think parrot website has a list of authorized installers or any good car audio shop could handle it. I haven't looked at competing products, although the Parrot BT kits have good reviews on cnet.com. I believe that since installing it does not require cutting into the factory wiring it could be removed with no signs of it ever being installed. So I there shouldn't be any warranty issues.

If you splice into the stock wiring and the radio blows up because of it, you're on your own.

At that point, I would seek remedies against the commercial installer, not GM.

Bingo. Just saying, if you put it in yourself. HOWEVER. If the Parrot malfunctions (not the fault of the installer), you'd have to go after Parrot, which... good luck.
Best bet is a hot plug setup, remove it if it blows the radio, return to stock very easy, and get it fixed for free.
banditelvis721 05-22-2008, 10:08 PM nice idea but dont like the idea of having that parrot showing in the car at all times, invitation for a thief.

The one I have is mounted to a plate thats Velcroed to the dash, I can easily slide it off and hide it under the dash. It would be a huge hassle to remove the parrot from my car, you need to rip the entire center console to get it out.
Last night I noticed that my unit was having a problem keeping the radio in mute when I make a call when its ringing, I come to find out by testing it, that the parrot only puts out 0.5v on the mute line, and the onstar puts out 5v. I unpluged the mute line and now it seems to be working fine, just that the radio doen't say 'Voice In' when I'm using it. I'm going to need to work out a to make it work the way I want it to. Guess I'll be making a trip to Radio Shack.

Does the parrot only put out 0.5V when its plugged in? Try unplugging it and see what the voltage is. The OnStar setup could be sinking current (when its at 0 volts), holding the line low. The parrot probably can't supply enough current to overcome what the onstar is doing. There are a few options here... The CORRECT thing to do, is put some logic between the parrot, OnStar, and the radio. Or, the other option is, use an Op-amp, boost the Parrots output voltage, and clamp it at 5V. This will make anything above 0.3v out of the parrot, trigger the "Voice In" of the radio. just an idea.

When I tested the parrot mute line I unplugged it first. I actually tested a second unit I have for my fiancee's car and both put out 0.5v. I was thinking exactly what you suggested by boosting parrot voltage.

Just make sure that the rails on the op-amp are at 5V, so you don't pop anything. I don't think there are any available 5V taps under the dash, so you'll probably need a simple linear regulator to get 5V from 12V. Pretty simple circuit, but just making sure we're on the same page, for safety sake. :)
A simple 10x gain should be sufficient though. Anything above 0.5V will still top out at 5V and anything below 0.3V won't trigger the line (it shouldn't).
G8Benny 05-28-2008, 09:01 PM I had CC do the install. The young man was nice enough and the price was right (if it worked). When completed he gave me a song and dance as he said "most of the speakers mute" as a call comes in.
I would like to buy the cable from you and will try to rewire this myself. You know what they say, if you want it done right! Just working 6 days and wanting to drive the 7th, I decided to give CC a chance and save some time.
Now here I sit on that 7th day, asking you for help. Last time I bring a new car to CC for anything.....
Please e-mail me with your price....
MLozano 02-04-2009, 11:30 PM Bump, ever solve that mute problem?
so has anyone tried to use the stock microphone thats already installed from factory for OnStar?
redhot8 02-07-2009, 02:22 PM I also installed the 3200LS in my 09. I used an aftermarket harness adapter for an Opel (same as BMW)and only had to tap into an accessory power source. The center speaker remains active during phone use but I can use the radio mute button to shut it off. I did not hook up any of the mute wires. I used the Parrot mic and just ran the wire behind the weather stripping along the pillar and along the front edge of the headliner.
When the phone is in use all but the center speakers switch to output the phone audio. Very easy install and very good results.
The Parrot main screen tucks nicely in the cubby at the bottom of the center console but may need a little reinforcement.
As for previous posts for BMW wiring being different, the only wires used by Parrot are for power and ground, all the other wires in the power harness are a straight pass through to the main radio harness.

To get the mute working I used the following diagram for the proper pin to use on the x4 connector, the smaller connector that plugs into the larger harness.
http://www.vhdesigns.com/x4Connector.sm.jpg
You just take the mute line out off the parrot harness (I think its a yellow wire) and tap into the wire that is on pine 5 for the "Telephone Audio Signal Mute". This will mute the radio completely including the center speaker. The only issue I have is sometimes when I dial out with my iPhone it will unmute between ring tones. This happens maybe once out of ten times. This only happens on my iPhone, not my wife's Blackberry.
LSPowered65 02-24-2009, 05:51 PM has anybody tried out this website: http://jhp.com.au/pontiac_g8_bluetooth_car_kit.php
sykotek-g8 03-02-2009, 12:39 PM Using the diagram posted above, can I just tap my GPS's phone mute into the harness above, as well as send the audio output to the 'telephone audio signal (+) (-)'?

jerluv2 03-08-2009, 10:27 AM Wow, you guys are smart. As soon as I pull the trigger on my g8 (the one I'm looking at doesn't have BT), I'm going to install one of these. Pardon me if I steal your ideas.
Question: Parrot also sells a Steering wheel control kit for CAN-BUS vehicles that works with the parrot 3xxx systems; any info on this? any chance I can get the system to work while hiding it altogether? I'm considering the Parrot ck3000, because I'd rather not have an lcd screen, but want A2DP functionality.
You guys really have you junk together with these electronic add-ons.
redhot8 03-08-2009, 03:30 PM I really have no need for the steering wheel control as most of the functions on the LS3200 are voice activated. After programming voice commands you say "phone" then "contact name" then "work, cellular or general" and it dials automatically. You just need to answer by touching the green button and hang up by pushing the red (most of the time call disconnects automatically after the other end hangs up). The LCD screen fits nicely in the lower cubby and is easy to get to once you get used to it. The unit also announces the caller when the call comes in once the contact has been given a voice command. Install was super simple with the ISO harness and so far works very good.
jerluv2 03-08-2009, 08:02 PM I understand, but I'd still like to locate the unit to a hidden place like the glove box, and be able to initiate/end calls and bt music with the steering wheel.
Night Owl 04-24-2009, 02:38 AM They now have a G8 harness. Go to Parrot's homepage, go to their online shop, click on the Car Adapters, and it will direct you to their partner. That site will allow you to select the G8. It is the same photo as the one for the 2005 BMW 3 series that SparcV mentioned earlier. But it says you need to find a switched 12V source. Probably the 12V power socket would do nicely. I'm going to e-mail them and ask if a mute wire has to be wired in separately.
Night Owl 04-25-2009, 03:01 PM Just got an e-mail back.
"Hi. The new G8 harness is more advanced than our BMW harness and makes the proper mute connection. It is compatible with all Parrot models including the MKi models."
Locally our City Council just passed a ordinance banning drivers from holding any electronic devices (phones, games, etc) while operating a car. So even if a driver has a headset, holding the phone in their hands to initiate the call is enough for a ticket.
So as soon as the dealer replaces my radio and I decide which Parrot to get, I'm going to install one.

If you don't want to keep OnCRAP, you can get BlueSTAR. It works with the steering wheel controls now.

Thanks! I went to Parrot's homepage and clicked on Support and Downloads and then installation diagrams in order to find the vendor you mentioned. Nice harness from www.quickconnectproducts.com (http://www.quickconnectproducts.com) . I'minstalling the new MKi9200 music/bluetooth kit http://www.parrot.com/catalogue/catalog/products/parrot-mki9200/

That is the exact one I have been considering. I have been following all the discussion about the BlueStar device, but my phone does not support voice tag dialing. So with BlueStar, I would have to use the keypad on my phone to dial out.
Where are you thinking of mounting the remote and the screen? I was considering the storage area near the 12V plug in the lower part of the center console for the screen. Might be too hard to see though. I don't really want to install the remote on the steering wheel but I don't know where else to put it.
