: HELP ! Gas Gage Issues

I picked up my G8 V6 on Tues 5/13. On Sun 5/18 as my gas gage hit 1/4 full, the bells went off, the message of "X Contact Service" appeared on my Driver Information Center, and my gas gage went to empty. :(

I put $20 of gas in it at a nearby (1/2 mile away) gas station. The error message went away, and the gas gage acknowledged the gas that I had put in.

Again last evening 5/21 as my gage got down to 1/4, it did the same thing . I drove approximately 15 miles, put $30 in it and the error message subsequently went away (And yes my gas filler cap was on tight both times with several clicks.)

Has anybody else had this problem? If so, then I'd hope to be able to lead the dealer in the right direction and get my car back as soon as possible.

Thanks!

I have a service appointment with my local dealer for Tuesday, 5/27, but, of course, they are telling me they could find the problem in an hour, four hours, or I might have to leave it overnight. :whine:

Oh yeah, I forgot, one more thing. I "pressed my onstar button". They were more interested in selling me more phone minutes and turn-by-turn navagation, and could not help me on my error message.

Ok, sounds like you have a legitimite serivce issue. Probably a bad fuel sender unit. A trip to the dealer is warranted here, I believe.

As far as OnStar, since you just picked up your car, had you, at the point you contacted them, set up your OnStar service? If you had not set up your subscription yet (and I know it's free, but you still have to get your account set up) vehicle diagnostics will not be available.

Hope this is helpful

yea i would go to dealership. i just got mine on Saturday and filled it up today. I drove yesterday for about 25 miles with "low fuel" message on and the needle below the first red gas line. Prob could have gone another 25 on the highway. Cost $62 to fill up. Ouch.

As stated above, probably a bad sending unit...had something similar happen on my TBSS.

Thanks for your help.......Hope the dealership takes this suggestion. You know us MWF don't know nothing about cars.:driving:

Though it could be something else, it sounds like the sending unit. That's part of the fuel pump assembly, which will have to be replaced. Since this is in the fuel tank, they have drain and pull the tank. It's going to be at the dealership for a while.

Had car at dealer yesterday (Tues, 5/27) There had already been a TSB issued for potential problems. They need to look at both fuel pumps/sensors. Yes there are two because gas tank has a hump in it. There is a fuel pump/sensor on each side of the hump.

Have to bring it back Monday when I have more time to leave it for a longer period of time (most likely oveernight - and when they could have a free loaner available for me).

Final Diagnosis - The terminal connection on the right side of fuel tank (male to female) was loose. Error code reading was P02636. They did not have to drop the gas tank and replace the fuel sensors.

Thanks.

Apparently the fixing the loose connection did not correct the problem.

After going some time without letting the fuel tank get down below one-half full, It eventually did get to one-quarter full last week......and the X Contact Service message again came up on the screen.

It happened this past Friday evening. I drove it (not too many miles) over the weekend and contacted my dealer for an appointment today (Monday). While the message was on this morning during my first errand, at noon when I started the car to bring it to the dealer, the error message disappeared.

It is there now......they could have it a couple of days and hopefully FIX IT RIGHT.

The prez of our club is a service tech at the Pontiac dealer where I bought my G8. He said they had one in last week with a screwy fuel gauge error. Turned out to be a pinched wire above the fuel tank. They had to drop the tank to get to it. Not completely out of the car, but had to drop it. Took them a while to find it, but they did.

Those sensors run two weeks to three weeks to get.

Mines been at the dealer for 26 days waiting.

Are you sure there is a TSB?

There's only one I know of and thats for the suspension.

My wife and I are driving to Florida and had this happen twice - fuel tank gauge drops to 0, DIC shows contact dealer, and range goes to 0miles.

What did the dealership do to fix your issue? It sounds like the exact same thing as is going on with my G8.

Thanks!
