: No Mufflers. for now... (vid)
hazer396 03-22-2010, 10:09 PM well im getting a X-Pipe (replacing resonators and mid muffler, yes i know Chief lol) and im getting straight pipe axle backs (cutting off the muffler) so i had this for a day and thought id record it for yall :)
enjoy!

wow it actually doesnt sound that bad, with that X merge i think ittl sound like a ferrari, that exotic exhaust note
TechKnow 03-22-2010, 11:08 PM Yea at WOT it doesn't sound too bad, kinda half rice half Ferrari sounding lol can't wait to see what the headers and exhaust will sound like on the V6.
hazer396 03-23-2010, 08:51 AM yeah sounds liek a VQ35DE (350z, G35, FX35) idk about ferrari.. but yeah thanks i guess...
mikeshk 03-23-2010, 09:44 AM sound good
i think the x will really wake it up and increase the pitch, ittl sound great
hfxG8 03-23-2010, 08:46 PM I like it.
jafrank12 03-23-2010, 09:19 PM Haha I took mine off about a week after I bought my car, just because it looked easy (takes about 5 minutes if you take your time), and I was curious about what it might sound like! It was much to loud for my liking thou so I put them back on right away. It actually made me half excited for someone to come out with an exhaust setup for it, to bad everythings kinda been a let down.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 03-23-2010, 09:53 PM If you could get it to sound like a Grand Prix with headers and a catback that would be sweet, but it sounds more like an import with a fart can to me. I think you need to try some glass packs or some Borla mufflers to get rid of the hollow sound.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 03-23-2010, 10:33 PM Here's a V6 Camaro with Flowmaster mufflers and it sounds really good.

so like the cherry bombs? and im thinkin about headers.. but no one makes them for the V6.. they have em for the commodore SV6 but the steering rack gets in the way.. and the camaro set up wont bolt up to the G8 set up right? or can i cut them to fit?
i might just go X-Pipe and straight pipe axle backs for now.. but if you think the cherry bomb will sound nice i might add those in too somewhere
DRCUSTOMPARTS 03-24-2010, 10:27 AM I think the Flowmasters that are on that Camaro are just universal mufflers so they should fit on your G8. I also heard a Camaro on You Tube with SLP loudmouth axlebacks and it sounded pretty good, but the video was kind of crappy so I didn't post it. The setup for the GT should bolt right on to your car. And yes glasspacks are also called Cherry Bombs.
RamJet 03-24-2010, 10:31 AM The camaro has the direct injection V6. That's a different animal, isn't it? Hopefully you can find some headers or have them made.
Your car looks great, by the way! Great job with the wheels too.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 03-24-2010, 10:40 AM It's still a V6 and will have a similar exhaust sound, even though it has direct injection.
hazer396 03-24-2010, 11:03 AM but the GT has a 2.5" Pipe system compared to the V6 2.25"
and i was reading on the commodore forums that on the V6 those sizes make a pretty big difference.
and the SLP Loudmouths are prettymuch straight axle backs
and if i put cherry bombs + mufflers.. thats gonna be pretty quiet
idk correct me if im wrong!
ok so heres my list
X-Pipe
Cherry Bombs
Straight Axle-Backs
DRCUSTOMPARTS 03-24-2010, 11:10 AM You might want to try the Flowmasters instead of the Cherry Bombs, those videos I posted of the Camaro above sound good. If you can't make them fit then go with the Cherry Bombs.
hazer396 03-24-2010, 11:26 AM yeah ill check it out
66cat389 03-24-2010, 10:49 PM ...
TechKnow 03-24-2010, 11:06 PM I agree with DR here, with the right exhaust setup, that V6 would sound reasonably like a V8, and good!. Go for it! Why say why, say WHY NOT! And great looking ride BTW, love the white with the black/white lip rims, dope!
:driving:
kalveerbhullar 03-24-2010, 11:22 PM sounding good you pan di lun...
hazer396 03-25-2010, 08:19 AM sounding good you pan di lun...
thank you ma chod :)
and so i ordered a X-Pipe, and 2 Cherry Bomb Glasspacks!
i feel bad cuz that was my money to lower the car but idk WTF happend

hazer396 04-13-2010, 12:08 PM ?????????
Saginaw748 04-13-2010, 03:07 PM I did an experiment last weekend...actually three, but only one applies here.
I obtained a set of magnaflow axle backs from a member and have them on my V6. I installed them at a friends house and drove home on the highway with my buddies following me in their cars.
The drone at a cruising speed around 70-78 mph on the highway was HORRID. I must say that I had the stock resonators and mid-muffler removed and a custom x-pipe fabbed up (check my profile pics on here).
My friends stated that at speed they sounded awesome and when I 'got on it' (shifted to manual and accelerated to about 90) it sounded mean. At normal around town speeds it's really not a bother (except when accelerating), but crusing in the 1800-2400 RPM range really sends vibrations through the vehicle.
I did have a chance to stick a blanket in the spare tire well as well as use some left over insulation my friend put under the carpet on the floor of his durango before a road trip to bike week. Together, that seemed to have a small impact on the sound.
At the current time I am researching how to get rid if the drone, as it is at highway cruising speeds. Some ideas are CC Inserts, adding aftermarket resonators, and just lining the trunk with MLV/Sound insulation/DynaMat.
I have ordered some insulation like what my friend had off the web (summit) to try to line the floor of the trunk, spare tire well, and the back of the seats. I'll let you know how that goes.
If I could do it again I would replace the resonators with aftermarket ones, do an X (or H) pipe and do aftermarket axlebacks...just to see if the resonators would cancel out the frequency of the drone.
I'll be interested to see what your experiences are with the X-Pipe and Cherry bombs.
BTW...The other two experiments were the 'shark fin' antenna, and Plasti-dip my front grill surrounds.
hazer396 04-14-2010, 12:16 AM nice did you get any sound clips?
and i actually have 2 12" Cherry Bombs waiting to be installed, a X-Pipe which is coming in this week, also im gonna get my axle-backs straight piped
and do you have any pics of your car with H&R Springs? b/c im ordering mine soon!
Saginaw748 04-14-2010, 08:52 PM I have a couple pics of the car after H&R installs. I must say that yours will most likely be lower in the front due to mine having the GXP struts. I found collapsed strut mounts on mine recently so I will be trading those out soon. I might experiment and see what the FE2 feels like with the H&R's as the GXP's are stiffffffff.
Here's one from rear...

And from front angle:
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/3576/g8contrast.jpg
My X-Pipe:http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3239/xpipe.jpg
I kind of wish I kept the stock resonators, maybe they would have helped the drone...no I am possibly looking at getting some aftermarket ones to put in before my X-Pipe or redo the whole cat to axle.
I spent this evening adding some 1/2" insulation to the trunk and spare tire well to try to cut down on the Magna-drone. At 62 MPH (my cruising speed to work) it is very tolerable/tame. It's just getting at to that speed that sucks.
I'll try to get a video of it tomorrow...but it sounds pretty cool when you open the door and rev it. I can really hear the CAI I have installed sucking air.
machvvv 04-14-2010, 10:19 PM Wonder if this set can cancel the drone?

DRCUSTOMPARTS 04-14-2010, 10:45 PM For $1200 it better reduce the drone AND increase the power output. That system looks similar to the GMPP system for the Grand Prix that costs about $500, so I can't see why the price is so high.

Just my opinion, but there were a **** ton of Grand Prix cars built. Thus more units sold, the more sold the higher the probability that someone will want one of the exhausts.
Not many CTS's / G8's built, plus the probability that a lot of the owners won't be looking for a full exhaust would equal less units made and more in cost.
Now, I don't have a finance or marketing degree from a big fancy university...just my opinion.
On the other hand $1200 isn't that bad IMO, I paid almost $1000 for a 1/2 system for my Ducati like 5 years ago...but that's like comparing Kiwi's to Wine grapes.
hazer396 04-15-2010, 11:29 PM just got my xpipe in going to install everything sometime next week or on saturday :)
and i might go with dynamat in the trunk
GoneUpInFlames 04-16-2010, 08:11 AM just got my xpipe in going to install everything sometime next week or on saturday :)
and i might go with dynamat in the trunk
Off topic slightly, but a word of advice - don't go with the actual 'Dynamat' brand. There are far better products, most of which are a lot cheaper. Second Skin: Damplifier Pro/Spectrum if money isn't much of an issue, and B-Quiet Extreme: half the price of Dynamat, and both are better products. Do a little bit of research, you'll be glad you did.
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 06:34 AM maryland speed has told me that the loudmouth will not fit the v6...has anyone tried anything else? does the stock gt's fit the v6?
BiggBerger 04-26-2010, 07:28 AM The stock GT mufflers do bolt right up to our V6's
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 07:41 AM then why wouldnt anything else fit , i dont understand, im not asking these exhaust techs about results, i just want to know it it mounts up....
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 07:42 AM ive heard people say they put MF axlebacks on v6, gt on v6, i dont get what the the prob is...how come everyone says it wont fit
BiggBerger 04-26-2010, 12:22 PM I dont know whay they say that but I know they fit cause I have GT axlebacks on my V6 right now. The flange for the V6 and the GT is the same but the tubing are different sizes.
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 05:05 PM so would the tubing really effect the loudmouth? i mite just go with the pypes set up
BiggBerger 04-26-2010, 07:13 PM any aftermarket axleback made for the V8 wont sound good on the V6
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 08:38 PM apparently the pypes is made for the v6 as well, its advertised on their page, i spoke to the tech guy and he said it will match up
BiggBerger 04-26-2010, 09:49 PM if you get them post up a sound clip
bvitaG8 04-26-2010, 10:07 PM ordered them, should be a few days
hazer396 04-27-2010, 10:54 AM post sound clips im getting my stuff installed soon! i might go with after market axle backs if i find some!
Saginaw748 04-28-2010, 11:39 AM I apologize, I had Magnaflow axle backs on and recorded a video of idle and rev but I had to take them (axle backs) off due to the drone from 1700-2400 rpm's being way out of hand. I had a custom x-pipe installed (removed the resonators and factory x-muffler) so I am not sure if that is causing it or what. It was just way to bad in the cabin for my daily drive. The start from a stop sign was horrible and unavoidable. The only time it sounded good was hard acceleration (heck, even the G/F liked that).
For the time being I will run with the stock exhaust and custom x-pipe to please the girlfriend on the way to work. However I am thinking of getting a combination of a magnaflow x-pipe (part #10790) and some bullet type magnaflow mufflers (part #10415) or just a dynamax ultraflo xpipe muffler (part #17552) to quiet it down or re-distribute the bad resonate drone.
Unfortunately the combination above is all speculation as to if it will work. I have been surfing various internet boards due to drone and that is what I have come up with (theories).
Anyone with exhaust experience feel free to chime in...
I may just wait for the Solo guys to do what they do and save myself the hassle of doing the above and having it sound the same.
bvitaG8 04-30-2010, 11:55 PM no sound clips being i just put them on tonite... i have to say, this is a nice aggressive deep tone...from inside the car, i feel its a lil loud, maybe thats the dreaded drone everyone complains about, but this being my first exhaust on any vehicle , i like it....gonna turn heads and it fits flush on the v6, i recommend others looking into pypes... sorry for the terrible audio, its just to aggressive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bclOAlCWcE8
bvitaG8 05-04-2010, 09:52 AM updated photos, and one bad sound clip...sorry in advance
trp3383 05-04-2010, 11:06 AM I have DT's on my v6. Nice sound but also DRONE. Atleast we have figured out any gt axle-BACKS will fit on the v6.
bvitaG8 05-05-2010, 07:42 AM im pretty sure anything will bolt up, its just the sound and performance that varies, but after installing the pypes, im almost positive most will fit both models
Chief 05-05-2010, 08:50 AM The dreaded drone comes in at around 1500 RPM's in 5th gear. Beleive me, you'll know it when you hear it as you can't hear anything else in the car.
One thing I noticed with the magnaflow system I had was after doing a little testing with me both inside and outside the car, the inside was louder than the outside. Outside has a nice low rumble and sounded great as the car pulled away. Inside was about twice as loud with the same situation.
bvitaG8 05-05-2010, 08:53 AM i didnt disagree chief, lol, the inside is 5x louder, but it is what it is....
Chief 05-05-2010, 11:59 AM Understand. Was just clarifying. ;)
