: High Performance Thermostat
G8GT594 05-24-2008, 09:42 PM Honestly how much horsepower can it add? How does it do it? Or does it just make the motor run better because it keeps temps down?
Im kind of new to performance upgrades so dont be to harsh on me please. :judge:
VENOM 05-24-2008, 10:54 PM i had one in my WS6 and it made a big difference, especially at the track. It turns the fans on at 160 to keep your engine cooler instead of letting them kick on later on. cooler engine = better times. Thats basically all it does. Not going to add any HP, just make your car run cooler which is always a good thing
racerx 05-25-2008, 09:16 AM the thermostat (160 degree) does not turn the fans on at 160, you will need to swap out the temp sensor to do that, or maybe re-program the ECU. Installing the 160 stat does nothing without modifing the temp sensor or ECU.
Just my 2.5 cents worth. I maybe wrong, (i was wrong once)
wreckwriter 05-25-2008, 11:54 AM Thermostats (at least the ones I'm familiar with) aren't supposed to turn fans on; they just open the water flow access "pipe" between the engine block and the radiator. Its a mechanical part, no electric involved. Fan will still come on at same temp but extra flow between block and rad will keep it from reaching that temp as fast or as often.
Atlas 05-25-2008, 12:04 PM ^bingo... and the cars prob wont be running at 160, more like 180-195, which is the sweet spot for LSx engines...
racerx 05-25-2008, 01:39 PM There are many suppliers who do not understand the relationship between the thermostat and electric fan in the newer vehicles. These people are living in the '60's with mechanical fans. Merely installing a thermostat will not lower engine temperature on a hot day. Why? The computer has programmed the fan on-off settings far beyond 160°. Example: "On" 215° and "Off" 190°. The fan won't even activate and try to cool the engine until the coolant temp is 215° so the 160° thermostat setting is useless. Answer? The engine computer must be re-programmed for lower temperature on-off settings. Example: "On" 166° and "Off" 162°. Now the fan and thermostat work in harmony to keep the engine cool. How? There's only one way - the Kenne Bell "Switch Chip" (Ford), Kenne Bell "OPTIMIZER" (Chrysler) - or a similar product - that can re-calibrate the fan.
gbcop 05-25-2008, 01:59 PM And with regular gas approaching $4/gallon, do you really want to sacrifice mileage for a few extra HP that you can't even tell you gained??
racerx 05-25-2008, 02:07 PM Well, in theory, any hp gains can equate to gas savings gain....as long as you keep your foot of the go-go pedal
racerx 05-25-2008, 02:09 PM oh and i forgot, why purchase a beast of an engine, 6 liters, v-8 and worry about gas??
could have gotten a 3.7L infinity/or 350 Z with the same Hp and better gas milage...no?
Cloudwraith 05-28-2008, 12:06 PM The stock T-stat is 187 degree and while you should have the PCM electronic fan points changed to match a cooler thermostat such as the 160's that are available you can see some cooling benefits using a 160 t-stat and stock programming at highway (and higher) speeds because you have a higher velocity of air flowing over the radiator. At idle or slow speeds your ECT won't change much from stock without the fan points changed to match.

Lets not get started on this again. Myself and others have voiced their opinion on statements like these.:judge:

No.

What are you talking about? The 3.7 is only available in the coupes. The smaller 3.5 is in the sedans, it requires premium, it gets the same mileage hwy mpg as the G8GT and has 55 less horsepower.
