Thought I would post some pics of a car I did this week. Owner was kind enough to let me take some pics.
This is a Maserati Quattroporte in deep mettalic flake black. The colour is called 'Nero Carbonio' and its beautiful.... funnily enough its very similar, although far stronger, to our panther black.
The paint was very badly scrathced and had multiple areas that needed heavy correction.
Here is a basic run down of what I did.
-washed and citrus gel on lower half to remove all road grime and tar. SOAP: Zymol paint cleansing soap.
- Clay: Griot's Garage Clay.
- Measured all panels for thickness test. lows=9 mils, Highs=13. Which is very good. I did not do that much levelling other than on the bonnet. Most panels were pretty even. the varying thickness' were due to angle of panel. (door compared to roof and bonnet/boot etc..)
- Semi-Heavy cut: I use 3M Perfect II rubbing compound with my rotary at mid-low speed with a 6.5 foam med cutt pad for the major scratches and spider webbing. I use a halogen or led light to check my results as I go so I know I have removed all the webbing.
- Swirl cut stage. You can do this with a DA (Which ensures no swirls) but i use a rotary with a mix of TC-8 and 3M at low speed and concentrated pathes. I never get swirls. But again, it can take years really to get good at using a Rotary. If you dont know how to use one you WILL get Halogens. "swirl marks"
- Final polish with 3M Ultrafina SE. This is a very user friendly product and is workable for a long time. You only use one pad with this and thats the blue waffle pad that reduces heat and is so soft it will remove all the final tiny hairlines that to be honest most people wont even see.
- wash again to remove residue. Very careful wash. litterally no touch on the paint just light window clean and blast the cracks.
I use rev osmo water so it will not leave water spots. Also everything I wipe down with is microfiber.
HD CLeanse folllows the wash then a layer of thick Carnauba. Ths time I chose TC's new paste wax. Its a great Ivory carny which leaves a great depth on black cars. and... unbeatable for the money!!! thanks Steve:)
Quick clarification.: This car had a lot of SPIDER WEBBS. Most people call the webbing affect swirl marks which is not correct. Swrirl marks are wavy lines that look like (and called) halogens. This is the micro marring effect from an inexperienced buffer!! This car had both but the halogens were not that bad.
Quick tip: You wont be able to see all the Marring halogens under interior light. You must check under the sun to find them. move the refelction of the sun along the panels and you will see them.
So enjoy the pics. Also note that this car has a much stronger Clear coat than ours and results should not be compared. Our clear is much easier to scratch and therefore easier to correct.
Total time: 10 hours. (over 2 days)
Cost: $525.

This next one is after 2 stages. If you look closely you can see some minor hairlines around the sun
