: Finished Painting My Brakes **Pictures** (56K = Death)
VENOM 05-25-2008, 05:19 PM So I just finished paintin my brakes today with my dad and they came out awesome. The red matches my paint perfectly and the black PONTIAC decals came just in time. I personally like the PONTIAC lettering, my dad doesnt, but its my car so there stayin on lol. Just getting the car off the ground was a hard time. First off, I am Polish, so my father and I were trying to take off the black lug nut covers. About 45 min later we realized you just pop them off :( Lol so after a trip to Pep Boys we figured it out, but oh well. Then we started jacking the car up in the stupid ass spot GM manuel says to...guess what...DONT! After a couple rotations I noticed the plastic starting to bend in a little because the stupid spot where they tell you to jack it up is right next to the plastic bumper. So we lowered it down and put the jack really deep under the car, right on the chassis frame which worked like a charm. So, then we jacked the car up which seemed like it took forever and the car was 80ft off the ground. After all that, everything was a breeze. Once you lower the car, you got to drive it around the block cause the suspension keeps the car in the air like you could go off roading with it lol. Drive around block, chassis and suspension go back to normal. Took maybe hour and a half on each wheel. Calipers and lots of parts were clear coated to prevent rust. In the end, I think they came out terrific and look really good once the car is in motion.
Let me know what you think :)

LS2GTO 05-25-2008, 05:43 PM :ohsnap1:
They resemble the calipers like on the 05-06 GTO's. Looks fabulous!
What type of paint did you use? How durable is it?
I've been using this durable epoxy brush on paint specifically design to paint calipers. Brush on is easier and takes less prep work in masking off everything and you don't have worry about overspray.
LS2GTO 05-25-2008, 05:47 PM Aren't you gonna paint the rears calipers too?
GT-610 05-25-2008, 06:09 PM looks awesome!
where did you get the paint, what type, etc.?
VENOM 05-25-2008, 06:24 PM Paint is "Duplicolor Caliper Paint." Very very durable. I used this stuff on my 98 Camaro and 99 Trans Am. Never faded, never got dull, never chipped or rusted. Stuff is very easy to put on. Biggest thing that takes time is masking stuff off. I think we bought it at Pep Boys. Had it for a long time.
No I am not going to paint the rears, maybe just brighten up the silver. I think it looks a little over kill or too much when you have red calipers everywhere. Im happy with just the front 2.
Attorneyguy 05-25-2008, 06:35 PM THANKS FOR POSTING! LOOKS FANTASTIC!
By the way, I don't think it would be overkill to do the rear.

Looks orange ??? am i the only one?
SRG963 05-25-2008, 06:43 PM I think it would look better with all 4 painted.
Looks good now too.
VENOM 05-25-2008, 07:08 PM yes, red looks orange in the light. look at the car in the pictures in daylight. When sun hits the red, it looks orange. trust me, its red.
not a fan of all 4 painted. these front 2 took enough time lol
thanks for compliments guys
GT-610 05-25-2008, 07:30 PM all four red!!do it now!
VENOM 05-25-2008, 07:36 PM lol how bout u come over and do them for me? took me all day really to do the fronts so, we'll see. My 99 TA I only did the front and I liked it. So we'll see. For now, that will have to do
Attorneyguy 05-25-2008, 07:57 PM All for red!
All four red!
All for red!
All four red!
SilverFox 05-25-2008, 09:51 PM yeah, I would do the rears !!!
TriShield 05-25-2008, 10:30 PM It's weird that even the GXP doesn't come with red-painted calipers from the factory. Hopefully that changes between now and production.
Gfrom8 05-25-2008, 10:51 PM Nice work, Do The Backs!

I wouldn't be sad if they didn't. Red painted calipers is such a goofy gimmick.
However this thread makes me kind of want to paint the ones on my MGM car a similar dark gray... should look sort of similar to the '08 Bullitt Mustang...

VENOM 05-26-2008, 12:10 AM goofy gimmick?
G8 Ray 05-26-2008, 07:05 AM I can't believe you didn't do the backs. The fronts came out great!
:)
racerx 05-26-2008, 07:26 AM I'm painting my silver, the same color as the factory. ;-)
Rue_G8GT 05-26-2008, 09:42 AM Excellent job man! They look gooooood especially with the lettering.
I agree with the majority...... DO THE BACK ONES! Lol!
VENOM 05-26-2008, 09:52 AM Thanks for all the compliments guys:)
Ausstar 05-26-2008, 01:42 PM that is so risky spray painting them. Did you cover your car??? I would wager that you have at least some minnor over spray on the car somewhere if you didnt. How come you didnt take the caliper off?? Is it a pain to do on these.?
Anway, great job it DOES look good and you DO need to do the backs. I want to do mine black all round. which is not as flashy...
HardEight 05-26-2008, 02:03 PM I swear your car looks like IOM. I have liquid red and have never seen that shade come out in mine no matter what light I am in. Maybe its your camera??
Batman 05-26-2008, 02:04 PM OP you are a much braver man than I. Because those pics look like they are missing a key ingrediant to spray painting: Tape. As in Lots of. I may be called overcautious, but when I do anything I am guilty of going WAY overboard with the blue tape in a "better safe than sorry" move. Kudos on it turning out so good.

no over spray as the car was waxed and polished prior to that and there was no wind all day. When myself or my dad was spraying, we help news paper over where the spray was. even if the slightest amount got on the car, it would not stick really or cause a problem because it was so minor. I can feel the paint and its still flawless. No need to take the caliper off. Then you gotta work about the brake lines and brake fluid and all the ****. It is not a pain as you just gotta take your time and have a good setup

Take your car and on a bright, bright sunny day, take some pictures of it and it should look orange. Maybe its my camera, but I have a very good camera and takes great pictures. Just the sun, no worries lol

You only need to tape off the close areas. You dont need to tape your entire car off unless your sprayin it in a hurricane. You just spray in short, very short, controlled bursts. I didnt just hold the car and go to town lol. I did my Camaro, Trans Am, and even Dodge Neon this way and all came out great.
Thanks for compliments everyone :)
boostedG8 05-26-2008, 07:26 PM I commend your effort but I think it looks cheesy.
That pontiac lettering needs a different font for sure. I guess I'm just not a fan of painted stock brakes. It will be a big brake kit all the way for me...
At the very least I'd paint the backs to match. C'mon mis-matching colored calipers...?
l3gofr3ak 05-27-2008, 01:06 AM looks awsome i was thinking about doing that to my G8 but my cars white.. so what do you all think for mine Red, Whte, or Black..? i have ASA AR9 rims with carbon fiber inserts. oh and also where did you get/ how did you make the pontiac lettering. i like that alot.. and personal opinion is to paint the back same color otherwise it looks to un even from a distance. plus your car is red so just matching them would look good like the front. looks good.
G8 Ray 05-27-2008, 06:06 AM I would do black on your white G8.
Looks classy.

I would do red. White is going to blend in with your car and after lots of brake dust, could get a little funky looking. Black, you wont be able to see because you have carbon fiber inserts, plus the wheel well is black and darker. I am going to do the backs prob next weekend.
http://www.xenonmods.com/
That is the website. It was $9 including shipping and they got tons of colors. They also make custom ones so I am going to work with him on possibly a G8 GT decal for the silver bar that runs infront of the passenger seat on the interior. Something the same color as the 888's, but with G8 GT I think would look cool.
Thanks everyone for the positive and constructive criticism. I personally like it a lot and really makes the car have a more "bad ass" look. I WILL be doing the rears. Just need a nice weekend to do them.
Zaphod B 05-27-2008, 10:24 AM Hey, NikeAir, I think your caliper paint job looks good, and I like the Pontiac logo as well. I do think you should paint the rear calipers as well - otherwise it looks mismatched.
Good job!
Zaphod B 05-27-2008, 10:25 AM I've been thinking about painting mine yellow, actually - that would really stand out against the black paint.
VENOM 05-27-2008, 11:19 AM With black you can paint them any color. Black is a neutral color so any color brake calipers would look good.
yes i am goin to do the rears. to me mismatched would be blue in front and green in back. Red in front and the stock silver which blends in with the wheel isnt noticeable, but I will paint them when I get some time :)
webbar 05-27-2008, 08:01 PM Looks great!..and I agree with the others, the back wouldn't be overkill

48548 05-28-2008, 04:55 PM I needed some adivce as I am going to do this also this weekend.... I picked up a can of caliper paint red duplicolor and spray not the kit. I also picked up two cans of engine clear coat... I am thinking of doing exactly what you did on my gf's g8, same color are yours with the 19's also. But I want to clear the silver pieces and the calipers with clear coat when I am done paiting, what do you think about that? Also the rotors, I notice on yours are black in the center, except where the wheel mounts and I am thinking of painting that back or all aluminum color and then clear coat? Also I noticed you took the pads out, but why not take the caliper arms(not sure if that is what thye are called) that you left silver off and then I can clear coat them and also make it easier to paint the caliper with? Just an idea.... Let me know if there is any reason to not do this.
G8>550i 05-28-2008, 05:31 PM Better left as stock

Ok, well first, I didnt remove the brake pads. All I did was put blue painters tape all over what I didnt want painted. When we took the wheel off, we noticed some rust around the center area, so we used a little wired tooth brush to get the rust off, then sprayed it with clear coat to prevent rust again. Then after everything was taped off, we sprayed very slowly in short, controlled bursts over the caliper. Waited about 15 min to dry, then hit it with another coat. Waited 15 min, one more coat. After that dried, we put the decals on it, then sprayed clear coat over the caliper and decal. Its really not that hard, but we also clear coated and cleaned up a bunch of suspension stuff inside there. If you want it done right, you gotta take your time and do it right the first time. Don't worry about over spray because all you need to do is go over your car with a clay bar and your fine, no worries. Hope that helps!
AND YES I WILL BE DOING THE REARS NEXT WEEKEND! lol I will i will:driving:
VENOM 05-28-2008, 09:44 PM today was the 1st real day of driving the car, and when i parked it and looked at the wheels, it looks so good and so awesome. My friend hadnt seen a G8 yet and when he saw mine he thought the brakes came like that from the factory, he loved them. It really does look so good when you stand back and look at them. I love them and thinks its one of the simpliest and cheapest appearence mods you can do to really add to your car.
48548 05-28-2008, 09:56 PM I am going to paint the inside of the rotors, I have have noticed the back are getting a little rusty or not painted well. The question is aluminum color engine paint or gloss black? Also I am going to take the arms off the calipers, I think I might be able to paint it better, should be two bolts or nuts, so not a big deal and I want to take the pads off also, when I paint. Let me know what color for the hub on the rotors, thanks. I will post some pics when I do it sunday. Again I have a week or so to get it done so I can take my time.
BBBBGXP 05-28-2008, 10:29 PM I am going to paint the inside of the rotors, I have have noticed the back are getting a little rusty or not painted well. The question is aluminum color engine paint or gloss black?
You might want to consider High Temp paint, regardless of the color.:wink2:
48548 05-28-2008, 10:38 PM I am using duplicolor engine paint and engine clear coat and maybe a can of engine primer for the rotors to help the paint stick after I wire brush a little surface rust off the back, near the air vents.
VENOM 05-29-2008, 09:42 AM yea we sprayed some clear coat in there to prevent rusting. If you want a color, i would do silver. i dont like messing around wit brakes and taking them off or anything like that, so i just taped everything off. but if u can and know how, more power to u dude, go for it.
Rue_G8GT 05-29-2008, 09:43 AM You might want to consider High Temp paint, regardless of the color.:wink2:I have to agree.
Used it myself. Works well and is cheaper.
Here is a pic of a brake caliper on my Stang. Did it 4 years ago without a touch up and still looks great(the caliper is a little bit dirty because I was just washing the car when I snapped that pic).

G8GT721 05-29-2008, 05:16 PM looks awesome!
do you think that the decals will eventually fall off from the heat?
VENOM 05-29-2008, 09:04 PM those decals aint goin anywhere. I had CAMARO decals on my camaro and TRANS AM on my TA, and they never budged, never flaked, never did anything. Look great for years. Just spray clear over them and your good to go. no worries :)

thats good to know!
i mentioned it to my father and he said it looks good now but wait until heat gets at it and they fall off. since you've already done it before and there fine, im goign to order them today
VENOM 05-30-2008, 09:38 PM yup, no problems ever wit them
unixadm 05-30-2008, 10:38 PM I'm going to make a trip down and buy some high temp paint. With my 20" Breytons on the way, I think painting the calipers will help offset some of the grey on grey look these wheels give.
VENOM 06-01-2008, 09:00 PM yea def go for it. I get more compliments on my brakes then anything else hahaha everyone loves them and think the car came like that
48548 06-01-2008, 09:30 PM I was working on the brakes today and started painting the brakes in back and cleaned off the rotors, but noticed, that there was a lug painted black and also a mark on the rotor, but I noticed this on the second one, not the first one, just curious if the rotor has to go on a certain way? I have never heard of that before.... Here are some pictures.... Thanks for the help... You can't really see if as I grinded the rust off and the mark, but it on there and I remember it on this one where it was.
VENOM 06-02-2008, 07:21 AM looks really good. great job!
48548 06-02-2008, 08:47 PM Here are some pics of the front and back...
48548 06-02-2008, 08:51 PM Here are a few more, it was more work then I thought... Also I primered the rotors engine paint gray and then painted black again to get rid of the rust.... So you might see some primer in the pictures as it was hard to tape in a circle, but I figure it will burn off or get brake dust on it, hahaha. Not bad and I have the decals, silver but not sure if I want to put them on, what do you think?
VENOM 06-02-2008, 09:39 PM they look realy good. i would put the decals on them. i got so many compliments this weekend at the carshow. everyone thought the G8's brakes came like that from factory
LS2GTO 06-03-2008, 01:41 AM Looking good there 48548!
front and rear are the only way to go.
I like flat black high temp brake paint.
48548 06-06-2008, 10:30 PM I would have posted more pictures, but not sure how to post higher res pictures.... I took them with a canon 20d 8.2 mega pixel, but had to reduce the size to post on here, if anyone knows how to make them look good an post them, let me know...

Is there any reason not to paint everything red, including the silver portion in your photo above, as well as the black portion? I've seen only one person so far paint everything red (our friend with the Black Breytons on the Pacific Slate G8...see: http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12685).
It seems it would be easier to paint everything red (no need to put tape in that round crevice), plus I like how it looks...
Thoughts?
Audiophile1178 04-12-2009, 02:39 PM ^^^^ +1 on that question. Why doesn't everyone paint everything? Just to let the poster know that the black part is the brake pad so I can understand why that's not painted but why isn't everything else painted.
Attorneyguy 04-12-2009, 02:59 PM The photos below are the ones that prompted my question. Why not paint everything red? Any reason not to? I think it looks really good.
Isn't the black brake pad painted in these photos?

Personally, I think all red is too much. To me, the silver sets of that red really nice where if you paint everything red (like above) it just looks like a big red blob (no offense, personal opinion). I like having that contrast which is why the majority of people only paint the caliper part.

VENOM 04-13-2009, 10:21 AM it really does make a nice subtle touch to the car. they look really good when the car is in motion.
Gwizzy 04-13-2009, 03:09 PM My old SVT Brakes.... (These are after a couple years of wear on the paint) ...I might do the same thing on the G8.. (But in Red)
