: Reasons, If any to not buy a G8
CaliWagon31 05-28-2008, 11:02 PM Well, the title here says it all.
Ive been impressed with what I have read and seen with the new G8 GT, and with it coming time to buy my new car (next month or so) I would like to know what you all have to say objectivly about it.
Thanks in advance,
Cali
unixadm 05-29-2008, 12:04 AM Don't buy it if you have a heavy foot and expect good gas mileage.
Don't buy it if you are expecting the feature set of a BMW.
Don't buy it if you hate automatic transmissions.
Don't buy it if you want to attract a lot of attention.
Don't buy it if you hate large A-Pillars.
Don't buy it if you need map type navigation.
Don't buy it if you can't stand a shaky idle.
Don't buy it if you don't like being an early adopter.
Great car. Not too flashy, not too many people seem to be noticing it around town. It's a fun drive, plenty of power, good brakes, good steering. The ride is very comfortable, and the car is very quiet. I'm 100% happy with mine, and for the price I couldn't ask for much more. The car seems to have a few little issues, but then again what cars don't? Even my Honda had problems.
VENOM 05-29-2008, 07:27 AM had my car for 2 weeks and no regrets. first new car and i love it. everytime i get in it, its amazing. no problems with it, no issues.
one reason not to buy this car is if your expectin 28mpg. but so far i have gotten decent gas mileage by not beatin the **** out of it and on highway set cruise control 65-70. You can get decent mileage if you dont drive it like you stole it

Those are the big ones right there. Its definately BMW style without the refinement. Its more brutish, which is a love or hate situation.

What! I get all kinds of people complementing me. People I wouldnt have thought knew anything about pontiac like younger guys saying whoa is that the new g8!
Don't buy it if you don't like the battery or oil display gauge.
Don't buy it if you don't want to beat Mustang GT's
kmag53 05-29-2008, 10:04 AM Yes the battery and oil display is rather tacky and should have never been put where it is otherwise the car is a keeper. My gas mileage isn't anything to write home about but it isn't that bad either. Would have liked a sunglass holder somewhere and XM radio also. Nav I can do without so don't miss that. The styling of the car is awesome and I do get alot of questions about the car and have only had the car for one week. Along with the Pontiac I was considering the BMW 3 series and the Lexus IS350 but when it came down to it the Pontiac was not only the best value but also the best styled of the bunch.
Rayvan 05-29-2008, 10:07 AM Mine doesn't shake at idle.

If you don't have a sunroof, look up.

I traded my 3 series for this G8.

mr_didgers 05-29-2008, 10:54 AM Here's my reason: my mom just got laid off and I'd be a little embarrassed using my new G8 to help move stuff out of the house when it got foreclosed.
VENOM 05-29-2008, 11:52 AM what is all this complaining bout car shaking at idle? my 99 WS6 shook like a mofo at stop lights and idle, cause it was a V8 and rumbled and was a beast. This engine is a V8. So if idle, your talking bout a little shake, I love that. You want the car to be mouse fart quite and not move or anything, get a honda civic. maybe your cars are broken if they shake so violently at idle it makes you **** your pants and throw up on the steering wheel. i mean come on, its barely noticeable. But if you have an uncontrollable ****ting urge because the car is shaking so bad your getting whiplash, maybe take it to your dealer and have them check it out and clean the stains off your seats
SparcV 05-29-2008, 12:43 PM My RED G8 gets tons of attention. I get compliments all the time from people.

I have the sunroof therefore no sunglass holder....how did you like the 3 series?
macgto 05-29-2008, 01:40 PM I liked my 3 series very much. I had a 2000 323i Sportwagon. It was a great car. But, after 8 years and 90k miles, I was ready for something different. Besides, my 3 was out of warranty and repairs were getting very pricey. $1200 A/C compressor. $750 for power steering pump. $450 for rear brakes (rotors, pads and sensors)
I have nothing against BMWs, but, frankly, they have priced themselves out of my range. The new 3 starts where the 5 started in 2000 and the new 1 series is just too small and expensive for consideration.

I had a 99 WS6 6-Speed in Red and it idled a lot better than my G8. That car was an attention getter back in the day. I don't mind a shake to the idle, but when the RPM starts dipping and I can see it on the tach, that does bother me a bit. It does not seem like a rough idle, it's more like a surging idle with almost a misfire.

"G8 GT Magnetic Gray Metallic, Sport and Premium Packages, Onyx interior, no sunroof".
Ssame here.
Hmmmm, apparently they made the Grey G8 GTs babys butt smooth 'cause they knew we would be buying them. :p
wreckwriter 05-29-2008, 02:55 PM Mine, also Gray, has just a tad of rough in the idle. Feels like the cam to me; not a bad thing :)
kmag53 05-29-2008, 03:48 PM Now that I am reading in here that others have a rough idle I don't feel so bad..mine is rough too but really not all that bad but you can still notice it. Thought maybe it was a bid deal but apparently not.
CaliWagon31 05-29-2008, 04:29 PM I used to drive an 89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a 401 V8, i like the rough idle. It lets you know there is somethingunder the hood, not just squirrels.
I figure I will be getting better gas mileage then either of the SUVs I have/had, so no biggie.
Thanks for the info.

G8>550i 05-29-2008, 05:17 PM What! I get all kinds of people complementing me. People I wouldnt have thought knew anything about pontiac like younger guys saying whoa is that the new g8!
Agree. Guys in their 20s are just dazzled by the car. Funny because they usually know next to nothing about Pontiacs...one even asked me who makes them. But this should be music to GM's ears.
G8>550i 05-29-2008, 05:23 PM Those are the big ones right there. Its definately BMW style without the refinement. Its more brutish, which is a love or hate situation.
My G8 is very refined. Idles smoothly so you can barely hear it. rides like a Caddy. Handles like my old CTS with sport suspension. Nice interior.
The G8 is very refined, it just does it on a budget. So no spending $1000 on wood veneers like a 5 series. Or obscure electronics that you will never use.
As for exterior styling, the G8 is far more refined than any Bangled Bimmer, most of who look like unfinished styling studies or sneakers.
G8 Ray 05-29-2008, 05:32 PM I can't think of any reasons not to buy a G8. Sorry.
unixadm 05-29-2008, 05:41 PM What! I get all kinds of people complementing me. People I wouldnt have thought knew anything about pontiac like younger guys saying whoa is that the new g8!
Must be area specific. I've had exactly one person ask me about the car since buying it, outside of the people I know. She was about 50 and just said "What is that thing?". I told her and she just went "cool" and walked away. :)

Now I'm starting to wonder if they stuck the wrong cam in mine! I can probably stand a nickel up on the engine while it's at idling.
unixadm 05-29-2008, 08:48 PM My gray GT doesn't idle so great. And believe it or not, a guy spent 5 minutes talking to me at Chevron tonight while I was gassing up the G8. He was drooling all over my car! Ironic I post about attention and then the same day... lol.
VENOM 05-29-2008, 09:18 PM i had 2 guys at the local napa store come out and want to see my car cause they never saw one. they loved it. too bad they waited for me to drive away cause they wanted to hear the V8. well, they didnt hear much cause the car is mouse fart quite. thats where a nice borla exhaust comes in lol

I had one guy at work stand behind my car while I was taking off and he yelled "get on it, I want to hear it". I stopped, rolled down the window, and broke the news to the poor guy. Magnaflow or Borla sounds good to me.
JoCh9 06-04-2008, 04:16 PM hey, im 19 and pondering between the g8 gt or new camaro. I was wondering what kind of mileage gt owners were getting overall. Any car driven hard gets bad mileage, so i am more concerned about when the car is driven easier (like while commuting to and from work) what kind of figures everyone gets. Thanks, and hopefully looking foward to joining the g8 family!
DollarBill 06-04-2008, 04:34 PM Another reason not to buy it:
No HUD!
Sorry fellows i know you all have been listening to the HUD gripe in the past but that is somethin that i cant let go that easy. For god sakes one would think that if it replaced two vehicles with HUD, It would have HUD as well! I dont care if the donor car(commodore)didnt have it, it became a pontiac! When in rome, do as the romans do!!!!

Combined cycle about 19-20, now that I don't stomp on it everywhere I go. City anywhere from 10-17 (depends on the city), highway can get up to 28. EPA estimated is like 16/25 or something.
Camaro mileage, if they indeed use the same L76 as G8, should be better as it's a lighter car (unless they somehow completely screw it up). However the Camaro will probably be geared more aggressively so mileage could be worse. You could always just get the 304-hp V6 Camaro -- in the CTS that engine gets EPA 17/26.
JoJoe 06-04-2008, 08:34 PM This car has a pu**y magnet, don't buy one if you don't want one.

Dude, you're 19. Your mileage is gonna be bad. It'll get better when you turn 60. LOL
There are some mileage threads. Try searching.
I've had up to 26 mpg.
dragon_7xs 06-05-2008, 10:19 AM if ur not concerned about the 2 door 4 door issue, id go with a camaro any day!

I love the new camaro, the only problem is im 6'8" and i'm not sure if i will fit that comfortably. I assume it will be similar to the mustang. Interior space is amazing in the g8, i sat in one in a showroom, adjusted the driver seat comfortable to my height, and i could still fit comfortably in the rear seat directly behind me (without my knees touching the back of the front seat. Thank god gm has finally built a car that i fit in!
dhessco 06-07-2008, 03:03 PM I would love the new Camero, but Im in financial sales and pulling up in the g8 is very professional compared to a 2 door hot rod :P

Eidolon 07-15-2008, 11:58 AM Seriously, DB, take a chill pill. Your histrionics get old.
A lot of the reasons not to buy this car would be subjective. Don't like the looks, don't like the way it drives, etc.
The biggest reason, obviously, is gas prices. But, then, you could say "gas prices" are the reason for just about any car-related cost-saving manuever.

Do the Commodore Conversion. Get the front bumper and hood from the Commodore. Either that - or bondo over the hood scoops and paint. Personally, I like the scoops - even tho they aren't functional.

Bondo? Will it look as good as factory?

I took one. I feel much better now. :D Wut does histrionics mean???
Anyway, gas prices could be an issue, but anyone who is concerned about that should get the V6 trim. The sticker says that the V6 only get 1 MPG better than the V8, but i think with a couple of gas saving tricks, one would be able to scratch the 30 MPG wall while driving on the highway.
BBBBGXP 07-15-2008, 11:06 PM ...one would be able to scratch the 30 MPG wall while driving on the highway.
And of course not being able to challenge every other hot V8 sedan in the country would probably help the fuel mileage too.:gears::biggrin2:
