: New G8 GT Owner Here.
Sting2114 05-29-2008, 10:42 AM Hey everyone...I just bought my G8 GT black exterior, with black and red leather interior. I love it! I also still own my 2005 GTO of course, but I decided to ditch my winter car, a 2002 Dodge Durango 4x4, for this...How smart is that? Okay -- but I got the package with 19 inch summer sport tires. Yeah, slap me please lol.
I love the car, but one problem. The dealer did the infamous jerky idea of letting it get "cleaned up"...Why is this a jerky idea? Well the car now has serious spider webbing all over the paint.
I think what I'm going to do today is wash the car really well and then use McGuire's NXT 2.0 (excuse my spelling)...Does that sound like a horrible idea? According to their website, it does help with scratches/spider webbing.
Please don't say I have to clay bar, I don't want to even attempt that..I fear I'll f up my paint big time.
redhed 05-29-2008, 10:48 AM congrats on the ride! my g8 sounds very similar to your's except i have the all-season 18 inchers. so far i'm enjoying the car.
don't know what to tell you about the scratches. i'd almost be tempted to go to the dealer's body shop (if they have one) and ask them about it...
HardEight 05-29-2008, 10:51 AM There is a member of the forum who is an expert at paint refinishing, I think his user name is AUSTAR or something like that. See if you can look him up or maybe he will chime in on your thread. Judging by his pictures of before and after he really knows what hes doing.
FL_G8 05-29-2008, 11:39 AM Congrats!!! I am loving my G8!
kmag53 05-29-2008, 01:00 PM Congrats on the new G8...had mine almost a week now and it is one fantastic car. When I recieved mine the paint was very neglected so I did clay bar it first then added a good coat of wax. It feels and looks a lot better now. Might be worth the effort.
TomPierce 05-29-2008, 01:19 PM You probably can't f up your paint with a clay bar even if you tried - at worst you'll just leave clay all over the car that has to be washed off
If the dealer neglected the vehicle prep that badly, take it back and complain. The worst that can tell you is NO but maybe they'll do something about it.
If you do wind up having to do it yourself, start with a clay bar. Yeah, it takes time but there is nothing better for prepping the paint to take a good coat of wax or polish.
G8 Ray 05-29-2008, 05:31 PM I would have the dealer fix it, but that's just me. Without the proper equipment, it takes a little work to remove those spider webs.
VENOM 05-29-2008, 09:24 PM My father owns his own detailing business and it has rubbed off on me and I am crazy bout detailin my car.
First off, is it spider webbing or swirl marks? big difference.
If the paint is spider webbing, take it back to them because that shouldnt happen and even a ****ty detailer would have a hard time making spider webs in the paint.
If they are swirl marks, as long as they didnt go through the clear coat, you can buff them out slightly. you will never fully 100% get rid of them, but over time it will happen no matter how hard you try. first thing you should do is wash you car of any crap that might be on it. then clay bar the car first. make sure to spray some quick detailer, i prefer meguiars. You spray that on an area and then slide the clay bar over the area. wipe dry with soft towel. make sure to do the whole car. after that, if you have a buffing wheel, get some meguires scratch X or meguires swirl remover. Do a little area at a time. if you dont have an orbital buffer, buy some soft circle or square buffing pads from like pep boys. work in small areas, same thing. let that all dry and then wipe clean. when your on the hood, work from the headlights to the trunk, vertically. when working on the sides of the car, work vertically from bottom to top. dont go in circles or left to right. after thats all done, throw some wax on the car to protect it. I like using Zaino but there are so many brands you cant go wrong with a name brand like meguires. let that dry, then wipe clean with a microfiber towel.
swirl marks never go away but you can minimize them. clay bars wont get rid of scratches either. hope this helps!!!!!!!!

Solid advice!
Sting2114 05-31-2008, 01:48 PM Wow, thanks for all the advice...
I just took it today to a local detail professional shop (A&K Detailers in Louisville, Kentucky off Shelbyville Road) and they got most of the imperfections out, not all but most...It cost me 150.00, they used all Mcguire's (sp?) Mirror Glaze line products on my car I believe.
Anyway, it looks good enough I suppose. I'm for now on, just simply take it to them once week to get washed really well, wax it every three months, and then twice a year have them buff the heck out of it like they did today.
If ya live in the Ville, I highly recomend them. They're reasonable on price and do great work. I plan on taking my GTO to them some point this week.
Sorry about no pictures for the thread, I have had major digital camera memory card issues lately...I think its the reader or windows ultimate 64 bit install because its a new sd card.
Blackbirdws6 05-31-2008, 03:02 PM Glad you got your issue straightened out even though it cost you money to do so.
My new combo is Menzerna Super Intensive Polish with an orange pad on my orbital. I then apply some Wolfgang Glaze followed by Wolfgang Sealant 3.0. Lastly, I wax the car with either Souveran Paste wax (for dark colors) or Souveran Liquid wax for light and metallic finishes. The finish comes out amazing.
