Can anyone offer ideas for the most low end tight bass without a huge enclosure? Is there some type of enclosure I can mount beneath the open air subs thereby enclosing them and saving my trunk space?

Kicker Solobaric is what I'd go with if I didn't already have some Fosgates.

You can just put a box under the deck on one side and it will be perfect!

Not meaning to hijack your thread, but this question is along the same lines.
Does anyone know what ever happened to "bass transducers?"
I remember seeing them years ago. They were small devices that were small enough to fit under your front seat, and were used like subwoofers. I don't believe they were a typical "cone" type speaker, but some other sort of electronic, bass emitting device.
he concept was terrific because of there small size, but I have never seen anything else about them.
Did they not work as advertised?

Just curious if anyone else ever heard of them.

I think if you installed better small enclosure subs in the deck and made a custom enclosure they would kick ass but rattle the deck like a S.O.A.B..
How about something like a small enclused bandpass box in the spare tire well?
As for the bass transducer,a speaker IS a transducer,so...what the heck is that supposed to be?

Thanks for the feedback. What about a custom enclosure within the space between the fender wheel well and the interior of the trunk. I saw an RS6 outfitted that way, does that sound like a feasible solution? I ask as I have little stereo install experience.

Look at Memphis Audio and JL Audio. They both make subs that are thin.

Did you want to install yourself or take it somewhere? If you want to take it somewhere, then you can use their dealer locater to find someone in your area that you can talk to. Of course, if you are buying it from them anyways to install yourself, I'm sure they'll be more then happy to help ya plan the system out.

Ok, I found them.

Thanks Mac. I like that on the page in the link someone had hooked them up to their water bed - LOL. I am taking the car to a pro installer as I want some custom things done. I am thinking of by passing the factory head unit completely, to my ears it sounds like the raw signal has been fiddled with. Not a very natural sounding unit, but it could be the speakers.

bass-enhancing seat shakers?

I think they just vibrate along with the bass, not sure about actual sound coming from them.

My installer came up with an enclosure that gave me big bass with minimal loss of space....

My boot is still very useful. I lost maybe 1/4 of it at the most ;)

Bob.au,

Is that a box sitting above the original carpeted exterior wall, or a box recessed into the original wall?

It's recessed into the wall....

Only pics of the box I have on-line, but you get the idea.

Yeah, it took my Installer a couple days to knock that up. Mind you, it looks a lot better than a box in the boot :wink2:

I used to be really nutty about my trunk, engine bay etc....but then after 7 years with my last car I realized that nobody gives a ****. Its nice at first and then it just comes down to convienence. My trunk slowly got eatin' up by my tools and equiptment and after awhile I was satisfied with having a great system to listen to -not look at.

not to take away from your sub,it does look great.

That is the direction I am going in - thanks for the photos. Damn that looks expensive, mine telling me what the installer charged you?

Hey Bob.au can you do me a favorite and take a picture looking into the trunk from the top? And is that a 12" sub?

That looks good. I think ill go to my installer and get the JL Audio 13TW5-3 and maybe it wouldn't be so consuming!!

MTX, Kicker, Infinity make good subs for the price. Make sure you get a bandpass box. They hit a little harder.
Rockford can be a little pricey but are worth if it if you have the cash

I absolutely would not reccomend a bandpass box.

I would reccomend sealed for tight hard hitting bass with a small enclosure or a ported for more output with a little more efficiency.

The ported enclosure is designed to give more output at certain frequencies. It is tune-able to your desired tastes.

Bandpass-while it can be designed to sound decent or even good at that matter, it will be the biggest of the three and will not IMO sound as good as either of the other 2. It takes some serious design considerations to get the BP to be musical and not just boomy.

I have designed, built and tried out all three with different assortments of subs and I still prefer the musical sealed box. If I want it Loud yet still decently clear I go for the ported...but only if I have the midbass to make up for the "tightness" that will be lost.

Looks Damn Good. Where did you store the amp?

Morris

Looks like he has it mounted under the rear deck (you can just see one of the wires). That's where I put mine too (exile 400x1). I put a jl 10w3 in a sealed enclosure in my trunk and that was just right for me. Anything more would have been over kill and the rest of the system would be lacking. Because the factory radio didn't have a gain for the subs I ran one from the amp to the underside of the steering column.

I bet this guy could redesign the front radio mount so I could do an in dash NAV where the Atari gauges are taking up precious dash real state. :whine:

It’s a cinch and shame GM won’t do anything anytime soon. But now there’s hope! :)

Some day I’ll have it all!

I feel it coming!

Cheers! LOL!

Not quite Morris. See the blue lights in the pic below.... those are the amps, they have they're own enclosure with the processor :wink2:

But once we sorted it out, we didn't bother. The sound is amazing and I couldn't be happier :)

Ahh, I see it now. I should have looked at all the pics closer. I looked at the one of the trunk straight on and saw the yellow wire (or what ever it is) and figured you took the easy route like me. Very nice clean looking install.

That's the manual release for the boot :)

Thanks!
