Has anyone brought a vehicle up from the US in to Alberta? I'm wondering which crossing I have to use, as well as the times/days that are eligable.

My buddy just picked up a 04 GTO in Montana last Saturday, came up through Lethbridge ( sweetgrass ) at noon. It is a 24 hr crossing so you should be able to come thru at any hour . Make sure you paperwork is done . They must have all paperwork min 72 hrs in advance.
What are you thinking of getting

I am considering a 09 GT.
Anyone have any idea about license plates. I contacted the state that I'm of buying from & they can issue a temp permit but no license plates...do I just use Alberta ones?

Use an Alberta plate. Good idea to insure it for your travel

I brought mine back with Cali plates. In California the plate stays with the car, no transit permit was required, just had to make sure I had my own insurance on it.

Call the DMV from the state your purchasing the car from to see if the plate stays with the veh or not.

Do you save that much buying it in the U.S.? When I quickly compare prices on autotrader.ca vs autotrader.com, I don't see a major difference in GT's. I would love to buy one but the prices need to get better for me.

So you finally pulled the string and are getting one eh Wrecker. Congratulations, you sure will have a fun trip home.

I used an in transit sticker, which got me from Iowa to Sweetgrass. Then I purchased an Alberta one in Lethbridge to get me home.

See if you convince them that you don't have to pay the 6.11% duty. I know a couple guys where able too.

On Thursday I'm buying a G8 from Pittsburgh. Driving to the Niagara border, through Toronto, and back home to Montreal.

U cannot just cross the border ..... follow these steps.....

1. Call US customs, they will instruct u which border to cross, and give u the
fax #. Or go to the web site, it's also there.
2. U must fax a copy of the "title" to them, with a letterhead (get it from
their web site) 72hrs in advance, so they can clear the car for export.
if u can't find the letterhead, give me ur email, I'll send it to u.
3. On ur way back to Canada, u must stop at the US customs 1st.
It must be business hrs (mon-fri, 8am-4pm) and go to the office.
U must have the original "title" with u, and ur passport.
4. Once ur cleared to go, u will cross, then u will tell the Canadian customs
ur importing this car. They will pull u over, u will go into there offices.
5. U will fill out some form, pay GST, A/C tax, RIV fee, and the damn
duty tax (6.1%). Of all GM cars this one had to be made is Aussi.

I have to get a "temporary transit plate" good for 30 days.
Ontario accepts this, but not Quebec, I don't know about Alberta.
U have to call ur licence office.

good luck......
I'll let u guy know how it went, when I get back home.....

Its not official yet. I'm still trying to get everything lined up here, but I'm hoping it comes together. It pains me to see G8's driving around without me behind the wheel.

For those of you that brought a car up from the US, how did you pay? My bank is telling me a wire transfer will be held for 48 hours....I sure don't want to sit around the dealership for 2 days.

My bank wouldn't even give me the money till the car was registered. They suck!!! Had to ask my dad for a huge favor. Paid cash then paid him back when the car was registered.

I wired the money using Globex foreign exchange...Got a great rate, can't remember if there was a hold or not, but I paid for the car well in advance of seeing it.
