I was thinking about getting the VMS ECM. I won't be able to do the crank relearn for a while. Is driveability affected by the code? How soon do you need to get it cleared?

Thanks

It should be drivable without the relearn, but VMS would have to confirm that. I would ask around the forum to see if any members with DashHawks can come and do it for you. I have one and it only took a few minutes.

good idea. Any Atlanta guys have a DashHawk?

You can drive it with the code thrown, but I don't think its a great idea. I am not sure what is going on in the engine while it has not had the learn. Then again, it might not be anything major but something like horrid mileage.

what exactly is the crank re-learn? You mean there's more to the VMS tune than just up-loading the tune? I was going to do the FlashXpress system rental but not if there's more to it then just up-loading the tune to the ECM/TCM. I am new to this stuff and really don't want to mess up my new car with which i love

Not too sure about the V8's ... but when I got the VMS tune in my G6, the only thing that was different (besides the CEL) was the fact that misfire detection was disabled .. everything else was ok ... as long as you can keep your foot out of it and use appropriate octane gas you'll be ok ... or you could just go have a re-learn done (better option).

The CASE relearn (or crankshaft variation learn) has NO affect on the performance of the engine. It is only used for diagnostic ability of the Tech 2 GM scan tool (or Dashhawk) to detect cylinder missfires.
It will light the "SES" (service engine soon) telltale on the dash though.
A CASE relearn will take care of the code. After that the ECM will never need the CASE relearn done again. Even if removed from the vehicle.

The FlashXpress is excluded from this process since you never change from the stock ECM.

Hi Kirk,

It appears that in spite of your explicit instructions, I for got I had my laptop set to close down in 10 min. when on battery power. I never use it on battery so when I did the FlashExpress a few days ago it crapped out in the middle and I had to reboot.

What do we do now? Thanks.......Randall Matthews order #1272 (I think)

I will call you this morning.

So what was the fix? This is something that could happen to others so the fix should be public.

When you follow VMS instructions you won't have any problems. I had the laptop plugged in to an extension cord just in case. Still, when I transferred the files to my desktop and then e-mailed them to VMS, they were corrupted. So, one has to e-mail them directly from the laptop to VMS and have them directly returned to the laptop. When I did that everything went "swimmingly" and the entire process to download into the G8 took about 15 min. Must have a Laptop, unless you have your desktop in the garage next to your G8!

I have a new word now- swimmingly :)

In addition to the crank re-learn, I understand a security re-learn procedure is also necessary when installing a new programmed ECM. Can anyone who has done this explain it?

Most of the new ecms from Vector have never been put in a vehicle before, therefore, not needing of a security relearn. If you do happen to get your hands on one that does require it, it's just a cycle of key on/key off for a given amount of time for a certain amount of times. Vector includes instructions in case you need them.

I also noticed that code 0315 shows up. Wont clear until the oil change monitor is reset.
And don't forget to do the security relearn with the doors closed.
Ask me how I know :ohsnap1:
