: Baby's First Dyno
GXPaycheck 06-05-2008, 11:49 AM Of course I picked the hottest day of the year, 94 degrees air temp, humidity around 20%.
1st run: 280.38 hp and 293.65lbs torque
2nd run: 299.99 hp (Arrrgggghhh!!!! So close!) and 314.62 lbs torque
Still bone stock, no mods. Not quite what Pontiac advertises (maybe I should sue!).
A couple of the techs were very impressed. Did I mention none of them have seen a G8 before?
Gonna do a run after each mod to see what the gain is for each.
Many thanks to Ryan and the folks at RPM in Garner :boink:
Torqued 06-05-2008, 12:03 PM Your car dynoed what it should have. The manufacturer lists horsepower at the engine. You measured horsepower at the wheels. The wheel horsepower will always be lower than the engine or NET HP becuase of the losses in the drivetrain. Rule of thumb for autos is 20%, manuals 15%. Its a general rule becuase some transmission and differentials are more efficient than others.
4gasem 06-05-2008, 12:19 PM Uhm... Ok how did you gain 19hp and 22lbft with no mods?
Someone holding a bottle of nitrous in front of the intake?

How'd ya guess? ;)
Only difference between runs was putting a very BIG fan in front of the car to cool it off a bit. Other than that I don't have a clue. But I'll take it!
GXPaycheck 06-05-2008, 01:45 PM Here's the chart....................
G8GT594 06-05-2008, 02:25 PM Right where it should be. How much did it cost you for your pulls?
SRG963 06-05-2008, 03:07 PM The fan (or fans) should always be used on the dyno if it's hot outside.
How much $?
GXPaycheck 06-05-2008, 03:07 PM Charge is $75, but they gave me a break since I want to redo them after each mod.
G8 Ray 06-05-2008, 04:08 PM The 1st run is most likely low because of a warm engine. Engine pulling timing. 2nd run is much closer to my dyno runs with a New Era Performance Parts intake.

That would be more like life right with the wind of driving at those speeds right? Love this car. I want the VMS tune and the Roto-Fab CAI. I heard header's is a good thing to get but....I don't know exactly what that is or what it does lol. It sucks to be a noob.

Thanx for the info. Who says you can't teach an old fahrt something new!
Next time I will bring my portable air conditioner and park it in front of the car.
Is there any rule of thumb for temp vs HP? I hear 70 degrees vs 90 might bring another 10 HP.
radz282003 06-06-2008, 09:27 AM Those are pretty good numbers :) Being new to this community and to this car, I wonder if these numbers are pretty common with these cars. I know that GM underrated Camaros/Firebirds and Corvettes in the past and wanted to see if that's the case with these cars too.
Thanks ;D

GM SAE Certifies all engines on the dyno nowadays. There is no more over-rating or under-rating engine horsepowers. :wink2:

For every 10º you gain or lose 1.03% power...
Hot=lose cold=gain:)

Speakin of some facts, I heard for every 100 lbs. you put in a car, you loose 10 hp. Is this true?????

Then i'm losing a bunch!!!
Where's that weight loss thread................... :)

There isn't one. My friends friend told me that. didn't seem possible especially with 5 passengers with 1000 pounds in it. what does that mean you loose 100 hp? yeah right. That would mean if i put that many people in my old car I would have a 45 hp car.

I think you meant, 100lb gain is 0.1 slower in the 1/4. That is a general rule of thumb for cars, SUV's are a little different due to the excess weight.

really? I'm about 250 lbs so does that mean me breaking 13 seconds is not gonna happen?
