: Anyone not running TPMS?

I plan to get some new wheels soon, but I really do not want to pay for TPMS for them. I was wondering if anyone is doing this.
If so, what are the drawbacks as far as the DIC nagging you about the tire pressure. Thanks!

Take the ones from the stock wheels then. TPMS is a pretty good system to have. I know a full set of sensors is about $225 from Tire Rack, but if funds are tight you already have a set that you can use.

I concur with swapping the stockers, its a nice system to have and much easier than listening to the DIC go nuts everyday :)

My wife dog has a doggie door to the garage and has chewed on all of my valve stems. What's the likelihood that they can be moved? Does the TPMS attach to the valve stem or is it one unit?

Yeah, I’m not interested in trying to ignore some nagging red light in the DIC. I’m still trying to learn to ignore my Atari gauge. J

TPMS attaches to the stem, it should be a three piece unit IE sensor, stem/valve core and cap.

Thanks!

Okay, I now know I can move it over and replaced my doggized valve stems (good for me). My dilemma is I wanted to keep my stock 19’s and get 18’s for All-Season driving but I am cheap (I’m claiming this is a disease (also why I’m opting for 18’s)), so I wasn’t going to go with TPMS. If the DIC is going to hassle me to death and there is no “leave me the f alone” alternative, I must have TPMS installed.

Does anyone have an opinion if it would be better to just but the additional TPMS or crack open the wheels each time to move them? I suppose it would be twice a year. (I have to admit I am afraid to crack the wheel open to get to the TMPS because all of the tire guys around here don’t care about scratching the wheels)

If it were me, I'd get two sets. Way to easy to damage a rim when dismounting the tires that frequently.. again just a personal preference :)

It's never easy is it? J

I agree with your assessment. Thanks!

Try calling Greg at Pace Performance. A set of the GM sensors for the G8 were less than $150 plus some shipping ($8-$10)

Oh, ****, that's funny. When my beagle was a puppy she would chew literally anything and everything that she could get her mouth around. I'll bet that if I had left her in the garage with my car she would have done the same as your wife's dog.

The dog would be BBQ'd on Saturday here! :p

None of the fun stuff typically easy :D At least for me anyhow.

What exactly happens if you don't have TPMS? Is it just a light on the dashboard that is lit at all times, or does it actually flash (in annoying fashion)? Also, what does your DIC do if there is no TPMS?

I"m about to buy my winter tires and wondering whether to spend the extra $240 to avoid the daily reminder...

Yo' wifes name is dog? And you keep her outside? $100 to you if you tell me your secret. :p

Each time you start the car the DIC will display an error and chime an alarm. The chime will go away in a few seconds and the error code will stay. It can be reduced in size so you can still use the other functions of the DIC but I couldn't get rid of it. I ran without TPMS for about a month while I was switching wheels around finding offset that worked.

Oh that does not sound pleasant. I don't think I want to hear that for 5 months of every year during the winter...

On my TBSS you could clear it, I hope that's the case with the G8 but it doesn't sound like it. I didn't bother pulling them off my summer wheels - figured I could deal with it for four months out of the year on the stockers...hopefully.

Just keep the old tires/wheels in the trunk! :)

I ended up getting the TPMS off of ebay for < $85 total. It was well worth it. Plus, you won't want to have to crack the wheels open again after you decide you cannot take the nagging anymore.

I will be keeping one of my all-seasons in the trunk as a spare for my GT, so that should get picked up by the TPMS.

My plan to avoid the nags is to get one of the cheap sets off eBay ($85 on eBay is a lot better than +200 at the Tire Rack), and then put them in some kind of pressure vessel in the trunk. Maybe solder a schrader valve on a mason jar and pump it up to 30 psi or something. I don't really care if the car monitors the tire pressure, I just don't want the nags.

I'm not sure what kind of presurre vessel you have in mind, but you might want to read on on to reset the TPMS and make sure that your vessel will allow that. (you have to active the TPMS by letting air pass throught the schrader valve.

Hmmm. Well, three Mason jars then (plus the spare tire in the trunk) ;)

One way or another I'll beat it :)

OT slighty, what is the part number for the TPMS sensors for our cars?

Someone should make a dummy TPMS sender to fool the system into thinking the real sensors are installed ... I'm sure with the number of people running aftermarket rims or two sets of tires, there'd be a market. Kinda like the CAGS bypass.

There has to be a simple fix as in removing one fuse that would disable the TPMS. Anyone try this yet?

Does anyone know the range of the TPMS? I always start from home, so storing the original tires @ the front of the garage then starting the car may work, at least for the ride to work.

That's not a bad idea. I might have to look into it. I don't have the TPMS in my wheels, it's not that bad. You clear it when you get in and it just says something at the bottom of the DIC and keeps the yellow tire on the dash.
