: Be Careful With Cam Swap
Pontiac888 06-10-2008, 08:56 AM Anyone who was thinking about doing a cam swap on the G8, know that the DOD/AFM lifters will only allow you to go to an absolute maximum cam lift of 8mm on the lobe (approx. .535 total lift with the 1.7 rockers.)
Though, I believe you can deactive DOD full-time through the computer, and then go to a larger cam.
Just a heads up.
h3llphyre 06-10-2008, 09:18 AM My guess would be that you'd have to take the AFM hardware out (lifters) to get a decent cam in there.
GTXgp 06-10-2008, 12:27 PM I was tinkering around with the idea of a cam and here is some useful info that I came across:
Stock L76 cam: 200/208......0.472/0.479
1.70 Exhaust Rocker Ratio
1.69 Intake Rocker Ratio
Lift:
@Cam @Valve
Exhaust: 0.282 0.479
Intake: 0.279 0.472
Cam Timing@0.004" Tappet Lift:
Open Close Adv. Duration
Exhaust: 71 BBDC 33 ATDC 284
Intake: 11 BTDC 91 ABDC 282
Cam Timing@0.050" Tappet Lift:
Open Close Duration
Exhaust: 40 BBDC 12 BTDC 208
Intake: 17 ATDC 37 ABDC 200
This thread says max lift for DoD is .590:

This thread says you have to replace the lifters and disable DoD:

AFM (Active Fuel Management) cylinders have slightly different grind (a bit taller) to accommodate additional compliance of AFM parts --intent is lift event equivalence.
There is a GM Part number for a "HSV" L76 cam... GM Part #12574519 ($139 at gmpartsdirect.com) The specs for this HSV cam are supposedly: 200/203 .500"/.500"
Atlas 06-10-2008, 01:12 PM ^great info...
jsalbre 06-10-2008, 03:11 PM What kind of difference are you looking at with a .500/.500 cam over .472/.479?
Mr. Sandog 06-10-2008, 04:04 PM What kind of difference are you looking at with a .500/.500 cam over .472/.479?
A decrease in duration, by the looks of the specs.
GTXgp 06-10-2008, 04:12 PM Small decrease in duration with an increase in lift.... of course, I am not sure how accurate those specs are. GMPD.com lists is as an available part, someone needs to buy it and measure :stickpoke:
Gee...............
Why go to all that trouble?
Just get a Vette.
GTXgp 06-11-2008, 11:23 AM To start with HSV have never used an L76 in their cars.
Secondly #12574519 is for an LS2 cam
Thirdly you may find the correct specs for an LS2 cam are 204/211 0.525" 0.525"......if you google the part number you'll find conflicting numbers quoted.
Good to know :)
I wonder if any of the vendors are going to make L76 AFM-compliant cams... since it seems like there is a some lee-way available before having to disable AFM.
Panther 2 06-11-2008, 08:08 PM It's refreshing to read solid experienced information, thanks !

I would have myself.. But one tiny problem... I call it my better half(A.K.A. "Wife")
SPARKYBOY5X8 06-14-2008, 05:06 PM His impala also has a truck motor, but it's the same as the 5.3 in my Silverado, same motor in the GP GXP to and I highly doubt it makes that kind of whp with out some power adder, no way in the world!
Mike P 11-28-2008, 05:05 AM I did a Google search for "Pontiac G8 GT cams" and ran accross this thread. I thought I'd give it a bump. Some decent stock cam info. to compare to after market ones....
Mike @ New Era 11-28-2008, 09:13 AM You can run more lift with the proper lobe. But, generally this is the case at .535. Our low lift DOD cam package utilizes this much lift.
Also, to the guy from Kuwait, Are you using the patriot dual gold spring kit(assuming because you said "gold spring")? The super seven lock/keeper does not have the correct radius for the l92 valves, and if you did actually install these, you are not going to have the correct spring installed height not to mention possible sheared metal shavings.
