Not G8 related but drag racing related: Scott Kalitta was killed yesterday in qualifying. I used to watch his dad race when I was a kid.

Ouch....Pretty serious blow to the NHRA. He was, like his Dad, and his Mom, a super competitor, and a great person to the fans. He will be missed by all who love the sport.

A sad day for racing for sure. I read that this morning.

Sports can be dangerous. I was at a 100 mile relay race (running) yesterday and a participant died. One day you're having fun. The next you're not here.

Two in two years, one of John Forces drivers was killed in testing in Florida two years ago. John almost did himself in last fall in a really bad crash after his chassis came apart in the lights, I think he was running Kenny Bernstein. I drag raced for about 15 years, no nitro like these guys, car ran 9.70's and never really had any close calls, but, many times I was in the staging lanes right behind someone who crashed. Its an uneasy feeling when your the next in line to stage after a crash. The Kalitta's have been racing for decades. Its horrible to see the crash, if you watch tonights finals at 7pm central, they will probably show the crash. I was watching final qualifying yesterday when it happened. There was no chance after watching the replay that he was gonna make it. Very bad explosion in the traps and the shut didn't deploy after the body blew off and that was it, big time crash in the sand trap. Bad day for all involved in the sport. Thats the first time that I know of that the remainder of the 4th qualifying session has been cancelled, unless in involved bad weather. Just a sad day.
