On a recent trip I noticed a new noise in the rear end. My G8 GT has 3000 miles and this just started happening.

On a smooth road I can hear what sounds like gear noise coming from the rear end (?). This noise only happens at steady state throttle (like cruise control). If I am decelerating it disappears, and if I am accellerating it diminishes but does not go away completely.

It sounds like a muted rapid metallic tapping that changes with speed - it goes faster as the car goes faster.

I would like to know if anyone else with a few thousand miles has noticed this - if they all do this then I won't worry about it - if not then it is time to go to the dealer to be checked out.

...and no, you don't need to do anything weird with the tranny, you can light 'em right up in Manual 1st

Wanna bet! Drop in manual 1, traction off, power brake...and fry them tires all to hell...

I had rear end noise yesterday but I had beans for lunch...:p

Just kidding, that kind of sucks. I hope it's just a fluke.

These trannys will have a whine. The 4L60 didnt but the 4L80 did. My understanding is that it is a variation of the 4L80 so I am not worried about the whine.
