: DIY - Rear Aux install & Factory XM antenna...
BobmG8 11-22-2010, 04:04 PM I finally figured out the rear aux audio connection. I made up this cable, plugged it into the Rear Aux male connector located just below the speaker wire connections on the right side of the radio and the other end to my Sirius radio. Then I activated the rear aux feature in the radio menu. What I heard next was sweet success. No more cable plugged into the front of my radio. My aftermarket Sirius antenna is gone as well, I am now using my factory XM antenna. If you too would like this setup, below is a list of parts you need.
Newark Electronics www.newark.com (http://www.newark.com)
(1) 94C0550 WIRE-BOARD CONN RECEPTACLE 12POS, 2.54MM
(12) 52F5443 CONTACT, RECEPTACLE, 30-28AWG, CRIMP
Valley Enterprises http://valley-ent.com
(1) S6-B41 2' 3.5mm Gold Male Right Angle Plug to 3.5mm Female Jack
Cut the cable in half and strip the cable ends.
My Radio Store myradiostore.com
(1) 243-3507 Factory Single Lead Antenna to XM/Sirius Adapter Cable
See diagram for wiring directions. The 3.5mm cable gives you both connection styles depending on your application. My radio is a base single CD (no screen) model. This will obviously also work for the premium sound system.
The Factory XM antenna connector is located behind the right rear seat along with the other connections for a factory XM radio if you wish to install it. That is plug and play as well. You will need your radio reprogrammed for the XM interface.

deiz29 11-29-2010, 11:44 AM bomb when u did this did u need to remove the silver strip as well to get to the side panel or can u get to it without removing half the dash?
BobmG8 11-29-2010, 12:17 PM There is a side panel that runs the length of the console, on the right side pull down on the area under the glove box. After that is done then remove the upper right side panel under the glove box. There is a lip at the top so push in a little so it will clear then down to remove. Open the glove box and you will have better access for this second step. The upper side panel has two white push in style clips, one at the right and one high and left. No other trim pieces need to be removed to access the Rear Aux Audio connector. The Video connector requires a glove box removal.
deiz29 11-29-2010, 12:51 PM thanks i just went down there and i couldnt really see since its cloudy here today i removed those pieces and i saw a black pannel which is for the audio im guessing. i dont think my hands will fit in there so it looks like i will have to remove the box. thanks alot tho!
Nevermind, figured it out!
DougoD 12-01-2010, 04:34 PM Is there any way to control my IPOD through the factory sterio? Do I need to plug in through the back of the head unit?
Thanks

I don't think this ever came to fruition.
Sorry.
edfiero 12-04-2010, 11:39 AM I'm using the factory XM antenna from the right rear passenger area to power my Sirius Sportster. The signal strength is down about 30 to 40% from actual Sirius antenna that comes with the Sirius unit. Is there any RF amp that can be used? Any suggestions in boosting the signal? I'd love to be able to use the factory antenna, but its just too annoying to have the signal drop out everytime I don't have a 100% clear view of the sky.

I would call TSS-Radio.com or myradiostore.com. I searched both web sites and could not find an amplifier for a satellite radio antenna. They could tell you if it exists. My signal strength has diminished some but not enough to bother me from using the factory XM antenna with my Sirius Stratus receiver. Although I did find an interesting option, PAC Stand-Alone Power Interface AUX-SAT56 at myradiostore.com that could provide a solid power supply and sound filtering to the stock radio rear aux input. Here is a description of the product. "Use the AUX-SAT56 to provide power to a Satellite Receiver eliminating the need for a cigarette lighter adapter. Both 5 and 6-Volt power connectors included. In addition, there is an audio signal boost and noise filtering to provide the best audio possible from your Satellite Receiver. The 3.5mm male stereo plug for connection to the source unit and the 3.5mm female jack for the audio output."
ohsixbrazengto 12-10-2010, 03:33 PM Which color of the headphone cord is left and which is right. Your diagram shows red, white and black. Your pic is yellow, white and copper. I assume white is still white, yellow would be red, and copper is ground? Thanks

Every cable has different colored internal wire. Use a meter (Continuity) to figure out which is which based on the descriptions in this diagram. Sleeve (ground), Ring (right) and Tip (left).

ohsixbrazengto 12-10-2010, 03:42 PM Duh, I don't know why I didn't think of doing a continuity check. LOL I do hvac/electrical for a living too. lol Should have been the first thing I thought of. that's how we check for breaks in t-stat wire all the time lol.

Did you purchase the rear aux terminals and housing I listed in the write up?
ohsixbrazengto 12-10-2010, 03:49 PM Yeah. I'm going to use it for the navi.

scruff24 06-28-2011, 10:44 AM Bob, I believe what I see w/ the cable is your XM antenna cable isn't it? Looking for the rca jacks/connectors to do audio and video...I will look in another thread.
ShineG8GT 08-02-2011, 01:21 PM Okay, I'm resurrecting this thread. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Please don’t bash. I have a scenario and a couple of questions.
My scenario:
I currently have an aftermarket Sirius Starmate in the front aux port. I plan on eventually getting the VIM unlock and using the rear aux with RCA cables to run an Ipod touch on the front LCD screen (and possibly later on, a backup camera). I would like to remove the Sirius radio from the front aux for cosmetic purposes. I also do not want to have my stock head unit "retro-fitted" for Sirius/XM because I take my Sirius radio with me in my other vehicles and into my house. If I got the "retro-fit" I would have to buy a separate GM Sirius receiver to go in the trunk since my '08 G8GT is not "XM Ready” (if you’re not a Siruis/XM subscriber, it is very inconvenient having multiple Radios since each radio you own, you have to pay for a separate subscription, aka more $$$).
Since the rear Aux will eventually be used by the VIM/Ipod, I will not be able to use the front Aux anymore solely for my Sirius (to my knowledge, you cannot use both inputs at once). So my theory is to buy a FM-Modulator and hook my Sirius receiver through the car radio antenna connection behind the radio so that I can use the Rear Aux/Ipod and the Sirius in tandem. I also plan on ditching the Sirius antenna on my roof and using the car’s stock antenna.
My questions are:
Am I right by saying that you cannot use both front and rear aux inputs simultaneously?
Can anyone with aftermarket Sirius receivers chime in about the FM-Modulator sound quality? Is it better or worse than using one of the Aux ports?
I don’t think it’s possible, but can the Sirius and Ipod both be wired into the Rear Aux together?
I need a Rear Aux audio/video connector, I don’t want to make one, where can I buy one at a reasonable cost?
This would be my list of parts to connect my Sirius receiver using the FM-Modulator and to use the stock satellite antenna:
And yes I’ve read the DIY articles for the Sirius radio installs (this very thread and this one: http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4522), but I feel I have a different scenario in what I’m trying to accomplish. Again, thanks for any help, and sorry for the long post!
LS1 Sounds 08-02-2011, 01:27 PM 1) I don't know of a way to use both the front and rear Aux ports simultaneously.
2) I haven't used an FM Modulator with Sirius, but I have used them with other devices and the sound quality has been sub-par.
3) You should be able to buy the connectors, but you will have to search for the one you like. There are a few people making them, some of which use OEM wiring plugs and others use connectors on the ends of wires that just slip over the aux port pins. Personally, I got a bag of free sample parts and made my own using OEM plugs.
Depending on how many total devices you want wired to your rear aux port, you could always wire them to a selector switch. The switch could be mounted within easy reach, and you could use it to select any of your sources while the radio remains set to the Rear Aux input
BobmG8 08-02-2011, 02:53 PM This is how the front and rear aux ports work. I use both of them for music. The rear aux will be permanently connected to some sort of sound input device since you do not have access to it normally. When you plug a connector into the front aux port the radio senses it and automatically changes it's inputs to the front. When you remove the connector from the Front Aux port the radio switches back to the rear aux input automatically.
The FM Modulator will not sound as good as a direct line into the radio. I just won't.
I have not created a video cable because I have a base radio with no screen, other have so I know they are available.
Good Luck with your install.
BobmG8 08-02-2011, 02:56 PM Bob, I believe what I see w/ the cable is your XM antenna cable isn't it? Looking for the rca jacks/connectors to do audio and video...I will look in another thread.
Yes, the cable I show from behind the rear seat is for the stock XM antenna. I connected up to it by using a Sirius to XM patch cable. No video here since I only have a base radio. Good Luck.
ShineG8GT 08-03-2011, 10:03 AM You know, I just thought of this, even using the FM modulator with my Sirius and having an IPod hooked up to the Rear Aux, I wont beable to listen to the Radio and have my IPod running both at once on the LCD screen. Our car only allows us to have a single playing source at a time, i.e. when you hit the "src" button on the steering wheel, it cycles through the inputs (FM, AM, Front Aux, Rear Aux)...I guess it's like a TV, you can't watch TV on one Input and play Xbox 360 on the other input both at the same time on the same TV. So I guess If I hook up my IPod to the Rear AUX and am using a third party software, I wouldn't be able to listen to the Radio at the same time :(
Oh and is the "Vehicle Factory Single Lead Antenna to XM/Sirius Adapter" 9ft long enough to get from the trunk to the front of the vehicle?
matthewo 08-08-2011, 05:50 PM im confused, i bought a extension cable for my aftermarket xm radio addon for my pioneer deck. i hooked it up to the location behind the rear seat and got nothing no signal.
Treyg8owner 12-11-2011, 11:17 PM Thank you for providing this great resource. I've used it for a JVC external HD radio here in DFW and it works great (I used your idea and added a noise cancelling cable from Kensington) for the radio. It allows me to hook up the ipod to the front Aux (using the Belkin Bluetooth Aircast - which sounds great as well).
pit viper 01-26-2012, 08:47 AM This may work better for me than the stock head unit route.
98mkiv 02-20-2012, 08:01 PM someone should sell this as a little kit.
Dictatorsaurus 03-08-2012, 06:19 PM Besides the JHP cable, anyone else sells a cable for the rear auxiliary?
Not looking for video capabilities. just connect my mp3 player which has a 1/8 Jack input.
