: Stealth Subwoofer Install with Pictures - Part 1
TomPierce 07-01-2008, 11:39 AM 08/25/2009 EDIT:
Linked pictures were lost when the hosting domain died. I have uploaded the pictures as attachments on page 3 of this post, but it is too much trouble to edit the original post and do all the image replacement tasks that would be required.
Hopefully, you can still make sense of the instructions when you see the pictures on page 3.
Tom
For those of you wanting to install subwoofers in the rear deck, here is how I did it, with pictures.
There may be easier ways, but this is 'by the book'. Going super slow, doublechecking everything and taking pictures, it only took me about an hour to get everything apart.
Remove the rear seat cushion. Grab the bottom near the corners and simply pull up. The picture shows the clip and it's socket.

Remove the rear seat back nuts (1/2" socket). The rear seat comes out in 3 sections. 2 nuts secure each side section, and then lift the section hooks out of the sockets at the top. Also release the seat belt from the clip.

The center section is removed by removing 2 nuts on each side (1/2") and unlatching the center section.

Here are the results.

Unscrew the center seatbelt lower retaining nut only (11/16").

Pull the center section trim panel straight forward - it is secured with 2 clips.

Remove the 3 child restraint attachments (1/2")

Note the spacer and fiber washer.

TomPierce 07-01-2008, 11:57 AM Pry open the airbag cover on the rear upper trim panel. Remove the torx screw using a T-20 bit. Unclip it from the lower panel piece and remove it by moving it forward.
http://www.tompierce.com/10.JPG
There is a clip in the center of the upper trim panel - remember this during installation.

There are 4 of these 'Christmas Trees' securing the front edge of the package shelf. Remove them by pulling straight out.

tntempest 07-01-2008, 02:17 PM Well that is exactly what I was asking about in the other sub thread, great work, do you have pics of your new subs installed, and have you turned up the gain on factory sub amp over by the battery. One of those foam covered cables on the passenger side is going over my sub.
EC-Ryder 07-01-2008, 03:40 PM [QUOTE=TomPierce;64467]For those of you wanting to install subwoofers in the rear deck, here is how I did it, with pictures.
This should belong in the DIY section. :judge:
I’ll be using it to install a new rear seat middle section w\ a real armrest...If and when i can get it.
I have the cloth seat, with no arm rest embedded in that section. :(
Cheers!
inTIMidator 07-02-2008, 03:34 AM Very cool! Thanks. :):):):):):):):)

I have a few more Ideas for the rear seat center section....you will have to wait though...
TomPierce 07-02-2008, 08:17 AM Do you have pics of your new subs installed?
It looks exactly the same as stock - that is the "stealth" part of the install - If I can manage it, the door speakers will also look factory.
have you turned up the gain on factory sub amp
Yes, all the way up.
Now that everything is back together, I am happy to report that the rear amp does an adequate job of running the rear subs. I am not looking to set off car alarms in the next county, just add a little punch to the bass line. They are only 8s, after all. :)
CStringG8 07-09-2008, 12:40 AM i want to do this, but i'm sure i would find some way to break something when taking it apart/putting it back together.
criley 07-09-2008, 08:18 AM Great write up and pictures on how to do this. Once I got past the fear of destroying the bottom seat and pulled it out the replacement was very easy and straightforward. Thanks alot!!!
tommy g 07-09-2008, 09:34 PM Nice write up. I have gotten close to attempting this as well. After installing a aftermarket amp to the factory subs, The stock 8's are showing their weaknesses. They do a surprisingly decent job at getting some depth and impact with some real power applied, but can only take about 1/4 of the power I have (very old Rockford Punch 200, about 200 watts each).
How well do you like the Infinity subs? Do they play deep/loud enough? Do they distort or rattle? Did they mount up without any major clearance issues? I was thinking of installing some sound deadening at the same time to make sure everything is solid and can support some real power back there.
Another thing, could you take some measurements of the stock speakers? I would like to know the "A" and "B" measurements in this diagram as well as the thickness of the mounting flange if you would'nt mind. Thanks a bunch!
http://www.newfoam.com/images/speaker_diagram.gif
TomPierce 07-10-2008, 03:35 PM front door
A = 6 3/16 B=5 C=1.75 Note : C = whizzer cone
rear door
A = 6 3/16 B=5 C=2 Note : C = separate tweeter
woofers
A = 8 B=7 1/8 C=3.875 Note : C = flat paper insert
All measurements in inches
You're welcome
:)
tommy g 07-10-2008, 07:53 PM Awesome! thanks!
hotshot2003 07-11-2008, 08:33 PM Thanks for the pics and how to. I feel better about ripping this car apart now that I've seen how to do some of it. I'll be installing almost 300 sq. ft. of Second Skin Damplifier, a Kicker ZX850.4, a pair of Focal 165K2P's, and a pair of Focal 165CVX coaxs in the next couple of weeks. I'll try to take pics and document everything as the entire car will have to be taken apart. Thanks again!
granatelli 07-15-2008, 09:09 AM This post rules... and so does Tom. This is exactly what this forum is all about - people helping people helping their cars go faster, stop sooner and sound better. Thanks Tom! Great photos....

Thanks!
Lethal_427 07-23-2008, 07:26 AM Great write up Tom!
Couple of questions for you and I am going to echo Tommy G's questions. "How well do you like the Infinity subs? Do they play deep/loud enough? Do they distort or rattle? Did they mount up without any major clearance issues?"
Just one last question, what model number is the subs?
I appreciate that you took the time to document the procedure and post it to the forum!
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Cheers,
JJ
acjames 11-15-2008, 10:51 AM Finish the install in maybe 2 hours....
I replace the stock subs with Punch Stage 1 subs. I had to bend part of the metal closest to the back seat to accomodate the bigger magnet. Wasnt that big of a deal tho. Lots of rattling now but i took care of some just by putting some foam around the onstar box and in one of the holes. I am gonna get some dynamat later to deaden the whole rear deck.
But either or wonderful job writing this up. I would have been scared to pull out the bucket part of the seats without reading this. Thanx...
Paniller 12-16-2008, 02:42 PM It looks like the open air options are Infinity and RF. How do they sound compared to say, a 10" sealed? Is it worth the money?

A solid brand of sealed or ported 10" matched with a good amp will probably outperform the infinite baffle applications.
I have an older but practically new Sony Xplode amp here (500w RMS, built in sub x-over) with a pair of Kicker C12's that came out of my Camry....I think I am going to make myself a new enclosure and use them for now. They rocked the old Camry quite nicely, I am sure they will do just fine in the G8.
For those that have had subs added to the trunk, how much does the rear seat/armrest block the sound with it all buttoned up (stealthy) vs. having the armrest down? I refuse to just place subs in the trunk, the deck lid rattle annoys me, so my subs will be firing into the back seat towards the cabin, with the enclosure up against the seat to seal it as much as possible from the trunk airspace. I want them to pressurize the CABIN, not the TRUNK!

It muffles them alot.....It will still be audible ...But it will sound like garbage......and really muffled...
Mine will soon have a modified laptop tray areato allow the sub to play with the seat up or down....Just a grill of sorts...:wink2:
keperman 01-07-2009, 01:52 PM Great post. Thanks. Do you think these would fit in the factory holes of the front doors? Stealth fit? seems like the depth could be an issue, but you are the expert.

Just the thought of wizzer cone speakers im my G8 keeps me awake at night ;-)
MLozano 01-30-2009, 01:34 AM Think i could get a little better perfomance from a set of those the infinity with aftermarket AMP?
keiffith 02-19-2009, 08:42 PM does the factor amp use RCA cables?
pantherblack09 02-19-2009, 10:10 PM does the factor amp use RCA cables?
nope, and the amp only runs the 2 8" subs in the rear deck
keiffith 02-19-2009, 10:12 PM gaaa, and you cant put in a aftermarket deck..... talk about a stupid design.
pantherblack09 02-19-2009, 10:29 PM its not a stupid design, besides sure a deck may look nice but with the products that are out on the market the sound quality will be just as good or better that using an aftermarket deck
keiffith 02-19-2009, 10:34 PM its not that a deck looks nice. most come with 2-5 RCA cable hookups, which allow you to mod the audio. and i know that you can get better SQ than stock, its not hard to beat blaupunkt.
pantherblack09 02-19-2009, 10:55 PM I don't know what decks you are looking at, cause I no of none that have more than 3, other than the ones that have 3 plus an aux cable type hookup, so instead of buying the deck for the RCA's buy a product like the DQL-8, it has all you need and more
keiffith 02-19-2009, 11:14 PM i saw one with 4, but it was an alpine.
ill have to look that DQL up.
pantherblack09 02-20-2009, 12:50 AM it can't have 4 RCA preouts
it can only have 1 front, 1 rear, and 1 sub, the other wouyld of been an aux or audio out
JBoogie 02-21-2009, 09:57 AM it can't have 4 RCA preouts
it can only have 1 front, 1 rear, and 1 sub, the other wouyld of been an aux or audio out
What about the center channel??
pantherblack09 02-21-2009, 12:31 PM What about the center channel??
yes good point, but they are usually split between the sub output
I personally have never seen a deck with a front, rear, sub and center output, but I have only been in the industry for about 5 to 6 years
just front, rear, but the center and sub are on the same output, just split
LSPowered65 04-30-2009, 05:23 PM i just put in some kicker c8's thanks to this write up. Very happy with them, i used a strip of dynamat as wide as the factory sub bracket and ran it from the back window to the front of the deck underneath where they mount. Then i just went around and used it as tape on all the cables. I also poped out both of the boxes on the top of the deck lid and put it under them and re installed. I did not do the entire deck. With it up past 30 i have no rattles back there.
jackalope 04-30-2009, 06:28 PM Just use an inline converter to use RCA's. Its not hard to hook up and they work perfectly. I ran an aftermarket amp and 12' solobaric sub in my M3 with an inline convervter to run RCA's for the aftermarket amp and the sound was IMO very, VERY good. Should I choose to add the amp and sub to my G8 I'll do it the same way I did in my BMW. Splice into the sub wires, solder in the converter wires and run RCA cables from the converter to the amp.
seanmindi 07-01-2009, 05:05 PM Tom,
I saw in one of your latest replies that you turned the gain all the way up on the factory amp. Do you have a picture of where the gain control is on the amp, or notes on how to get to it? I found the amp, just being a bit cautious before I tear into anything. Thx in advance for your help.
Muff Daddy 07-01-2009, 06:22 PM Is anybody overheating the stock amp in the trunk? The one in my gto would over heat and shut off for awhile during the summer.

Mike P 07-01-2009, 08:20 PM This is a great DIY thread for a subwoofer swap / install.......
Nice write up. This is the first time I've seen this thread.....
...
jxhopper 07-02-2009, 07:02 AM Someone that has the 8" infinity reference subs installed in the factory deck position please comment on the sound you are getting. Since these are meant to be in an enclosure, how do they sound free air in the deck.
I bought a couple and want to know how they sound in the deck. They seem awfully heavy to be tacked to the deck.
Can any one speak to the quality of the bass when they are installed in this manner. I like the punch not the boom.
Thanks
CHale24 07-08-2009, 11:04 AM Where exactly is this gain knob that we're all talking about? I can't find it.
Edit- Nevermind, I found it with a Yahoo search. Never could find it because I didn't think I had to do so much to get to it. All in all took about 10 minutes and it helps...but I still need to quickly get my 12 inch sub installed in the trunk. Or maybe I should get two new 8 inch subs and just put them back in the deck with a new amp. I was going to get a custom deck built and put my 12 inch between the two 8's but as far as sound quality I've decided against that. Just going to get a single 12 inch box and put it in the corner of the trunk.
Thorn210 07-21-2009, 05:14 PM Any words of caution when removing the the air bags? Is the air bag actually in the plastic panel? Never had deal with air bags just a little unsure, but really want to replace the factory subs and amp. thanks.
Scorpious 07-21-2009, 05:17 PM what is the point of removing the trim with the air bags? i never had to do that and everything was fine.
Thorn210 07-21-2009, 07:16 PM just going by original post, but hey if you can do it without, that great thanks!
MSUG8GT 07-30-2009, 06:21 PM just going by original post, but hey if you can do it without, that great thanks!
The bags should be attached to the steel structure of the roof of the vehicle, the plastic is just trim.
I haven't done this on the G8 yet, but in some cars to get the back deck off (the carpet part) you need to remove the trim. The trim covers the carpet panel on some vehicles.
Taking the trim off a car with airbags makes me a little nervous too, but I'm always afraid to break the clips on the plastic trim and cause rattles :judge:
Scorpious 07-30-2009, 07:08 PM u do not need to remove them in the g8 u r wasting time and effort doin so
Thorn210 07-30-2009, 08:25 PM Yes, The sub install went well without removing the side panels. Was easy to do with the help of this tread. And now i have bass!

zepcom 08-26-2009, 10:32 AM I found that removing the bottom seatpart from the how-to isn't necessary because with a socket and extension (I think it was a 13mm socket) I was able to take off the seatback on the rear sides and center without messing with the seatbottom at all. I was worried about breaking those little white plastic pieces as well, so I tried it this way first, and it was fine!
Additionally, I got the job done without having to mess with the side airbags plastics as well.
Plus it was more comfortable (http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?p=332086&posted=1#) to kneel on the installed seat-bottom while I was working on removing the other trim components... :wink2:

Screw991le 11-22-2009, 07:39 AM Nice write up, I am going to tackle this soon. I am waiting for more reviews on what people are using for free air subs.
09slateGT 11-27-2009, 08:35 AM Thanks for the great write up. I just used this information and pictures to install a pair of Kicker 07CVR84's. Currently they are running off the stock amp but that will also be replaced soon. With the stock amp there is a slight improvement in sound quality but since the Kickers have an rms range of 50-200/ speaker and the stock amp is only pushing ~40 there is much improvement to be gained with more power. The subs only required slight modification to the rear deck (~1/4 of metal removed) to make them fit. I can confirm you don't need to remove the air bags but I did remove the seat bottom. You can do this without removing the seat bottom but it was easier for me to just remove it. If anyone is interested in the Kicker 8" CVR's they are BOGO at Crutchfield for $99 for the pair.

zepcom 11-27-2009, 09:17 AM Thanks for the great write up.
Just a word of caution ... as most people who added an aftermarket amp will tell you, you still need the 'stock subs amp' hooked up. The rear line inputs go completely dead as soon as the factory amp is disconnected. My install taught me that I had to relocate the factory amp (but keep it plugged in and powered up normally) and then tap the necessary wires as inputs to the replacement amp.
Hope this helps... :)

My bad, I realized after the fact that the first post had hosting issues.

I didn't know this. How are you guys tapping into the stock speaker wires that go to the amp then? Are most people just using a t-tap?
mackg8 12-01-2009, 08:59 AM Hi,which wire is the positive? Green or Yellow?
jeff s 12-04-2009, 03:48 PM Is there some kind of trick to getting the child seat restraints back in? I can't get the bolts to catch. I've already put the seat backs back on, i hope i don't have to take them off again.

Are you speaking of the rear deck latches?
You *may* need to take the seatbacks out again...
first off, you need to make sure that the three spots that line up to the child restraints DIDN'T get covered over with any sound deadning or dynamat... I had that problem at first and needed to scratch-awl through it.
Anyway, the rear deck carpet does shift side to side a little bit, and I found that for those rear deck latches (with the star pattern bolts and thick bushings) you need to put them in before the seatback is in. It may require shifting the rear deck carpet a bit, I had the most luck with starting the middle one by hand first, then I was able to manuver both side ones in after getting the center anchored first.
Hope this helps... at least this is how I did it and it worked out fine.
Good luck!
jeff s 12-04-2009, 09:32 PM Thanks. I eventually got it in there. It definitely would've been easier to do that before putting the seat backs back on.
jeff s 12-04-2009, 09:33 PM Hi,which wire is the positive? Green or Yellow?
Based on a diagram I saw in another thread, it looks like the green is (+) and yellow is (-). That's how I wired it, and it seemed to work.

HTH!
Cheers,

Rubbabubi 03-05-2010, 11:43 PM Do you need to use Dynamat or anything with this setup? I've heard that the rear deck might rattle like crazy, just wondering what you guys with this setup have done to minimize the rattle.

probably don't "need to" use any deadener like Dynamat, but might as well since you are in there already and it will DEFINITELY help! Do it once, do it right! ;)
Martin 04-26-2010, 10:39 PM Another install done, thx to all the information on this site :)
aabry 01-23-2011, 08:06 AM I did this entire uninstall and install in about an hour. I'm pretty inclined with stuff like this and I wanted to tackle it. Problem was, I didn't have any subs to put back in, so basically i wanted to see how big the hole in the metal was so I could maybe squeeze my 10s in there, no chance. I planned on maybe making a mount for the 10s, but I don't want to do that I don't think. I guess I'll juse live with the stock 8s since I can't find any free air subs to put in there. It was a pretty easy uninstall to do, (thanks to Zep.) All of you who put in your time to do this stuff and post it, god bless. I am unemployed right now, so maybe I should tear into something and post what I find?? I did this without taking the airbag covers off. Them restraint bolts are like a woman though, darn things had to be juuuuuuust right or they wouldn't start. Thanks everyone for your input. You made it easier than it really was.
aabry 01-23-2011, 08:16 AM ***I guess I didn't read enough on here about the subs. So they do have some free air 8s? alright then. My next issue. The sound deadning. I might as well do it if I'm going to take it all apart again. So, I have never used the stuff before. I assume it has a sticky side to it?? Do I cover the wires and components on the back deck? Everything but the speakers and bolt holes I am assuming. I didn't know if I had to fish it under the cables/wires, or not?
lynch8 02-06-2011, 03:55 PM great write up
G8-Prospect 02-12-2011, 09:34 PM Great writeup, the pictures were definitely a big help. It was overall a very easy project by following the directions provided. It took me a few hours but I was being especially careful. Everything came out and went beck into place perfectly. I installed 8" Kicker CVT82s. There was a definate improvement but I think I may need to adjust the gain a little more. Thanks again!
naterg8gt 02-18-2011, 08:45 AM Good stuff!
Daniel Linnett 02-18-2011, 10:28 AM thanks for the write up. If I ever get some spare cash I may just buy some new speakers :D
