: G8 GT to be $40000???
shorod 08-27-2007, 03:39 PM I hope this is some type of misprint or just a plain old misquote, but on some of the other boards, a thread about future Buicks has GM's veep LaNeve saying that the G8 GT will be at or near $40000?? If that's that case, I'll be buying a Charger R/T for about $34000!!!! They are crazy at GM if they think they can sell the G8 GT at anywhere near $40000!!! This is just like GM, get all of us excited about a car that might be something to really be proud of, then just drop cold water on all of us. No one will buy this car at $40000. Oh well, maybe if we wait a few years, and the lots are full of unsold G8's at that price, the dealers will have a fire sale, buy one, get one free!!!!!
r1owner 08-27-2007, 03:57 PM I doubt it'll be that expensive, but then again, they are approaching 30K on the new Malibu.
Aussie G8 08-27-2007, 04:17 PM That would be a bad move for GM, its would be like the GTO all over again.
Cool_Hand_Luke 08-27-2007, 04:22 PM That would kill the G8 model and doom it right away. A GXP starting around $35-36k and fully optioned for around $38k seems possible.
r1owner 08-27-2007, 04:28 PM If it approaches 38K even loaded for a G8 GT, I'll be looking at a lightly used M35 Sport model or 335i.
chiefpontiac 08-27-2007, 05:57 PM At $40,000 a CTS at $35000 looks impressive.
OzHolden 08-27-2007, 07:31 PM ... the G8 GT will be at or near $40000?? If that's that case, I'll be buying a Charger R/T for about $34000!!!!
I agree, to be price competitive with the Charger they will have to do much better than $40k.
A Charger with the R/T Performance Package (Hemi engine, 20" wheels, f&r spoilers, performance seats, etc) is only $34,665 MSRP. With the current $3,500 rebate and just a slight discount from the dealer ($1,500), a realistic sales price is under $30k (plus ttl).
I'm just waiting for the "real" prices on the G8. If they're bad (like too near or over $35k), then I'll go get a Charger or left over GTO.
appletonrc 08-27-2007, 08:45 PM Yep, a charger would be in my future if the GT was that much. Lutz said well under 35K for a GT though, I don't think the 40K holds any water.
immortal 08-27-2007, 09:37 PM $40K is ludicrous. It ain't happening.
need4spd 08-27-2007, 11:24 PM During the intro in the windy city, Lutz said that fully loaded it would be about 35K, 40K is not about 35K.
At 40K I'm out also.
Sluggz 08-29-2007, 12:22 AM As far as I am concerned, this is GMs last chance. If they price it too high, or in any way screw this up, I am done with GM forever.

The Oz base price without options (see below, some of which you will probably get on the GT as standard) of an SS auto is 46,990.00 which at today's rate of 80.81c/$ is US36,394.66 (even if you take off our 10% GST and put on your own taxes a few of the options below and it's more exxy over here).
Not so long ago (third week of July) it climbed up to 88 cents to the dollar (with 90 looking possible) so maybe they took that into account when they mentioned 40K? But I believe they "hedge" these things to avoid being stung too much on currency variations (perhaps now with the US-Oz and NA free trade agreements we should combine currencies - "Pacific peso" anyone?).

Okay, so they must price it to the market it's selling in - they did with the GTO (the sums were even more favourable to the US market then) but didn't discount enough for the "old and unexciting" styling of that model.
Perhaps they are just trying for the "pleasant surprise when it's not 40K" tactic?
There is no way this is going to be 40K. The hype for me wore off however when the news started coming out that there will be no nav option. The RT has Nav why the hell cant GM let the consumer decide if they want to use onstar or an inbuilt Nav?
DevilYellow 08-29-2007, 07:07 AM mang01 - you cant take the retail price and do the currency conversion. Pontiac gets the 'bulk discount' ;) Plus overall everything here costs less. Sorry. But hey, thats what you get for living in a beautiful place :p
chiefpontiac 08-29-2007, 11:39 AM I agree with DY. The price will be whatever they set it at and will not be based on currency conversion. Even the German cars such as BMW and Audi cost much less here than they do in Europe. And teh reverse is also true, you cannot do a conversion on the Sky Redline and get close to what the Opel GT sells for (much, much more)

+1. The reason why they are priced so high in Aus. and NZ is because they have through the roof taxes.
I got my Lumina SS with leather seats, 6 CD player and a T56 for $32K.
T-Bones Goat 09-19-2007, 08:14 PM I think if they decide to make a GXP version with a LS3 to compete with the SRT8 then it could go over $40000 just like the SRT8. The GT wil not be that expensive.

I don't know how true this is. Mercury Marine sued japanese boat engine manufactures such as Yamaha for selling engines cheaper here in the U.S. than in Japan. There is some law against that and Mercury ended up winning. But I don't know about a rebadge. Brings up a good point. Although BMW and Audi are not rebadges I would guess it has something to do with taxes or something on that line. I do not know for sure though.
The Zeta Chassis that the Commodore, G8, and Camaro are based on will be a complete failure if they price it out of reach. To waste a $billion on a global chassis that just wouldn't make sense. My expectations are for the base G8 V6 to come in below $30k, a G8 GT to start around $30k and the ability to be well equipped for less than $35k, and the GXP model to start under $40k but any options will take you into the $40s. In the car world numbers mean everything, if the base price is too high people won't even come to the showrooms to look at it. You need to offer the low base price and let the options take the price up. If people see on the internet or magazines that they can get a similarly equipped Dodge for significantly less money elsewhere then Pontiac dealerships should close the doors now. The GT won't be anywhere near $40 unless you check every option box from the factory and the dealership and it might be a struggle then. The future of the Pontiac brand depends on the success of mass market cars like the G8 and, naive as I may be, I think GM is too smart to price themselves out of the market again.
TriShield 09-23-2007, 03:06 PM The pricing will likely mirror the Dodge Charger and Magnum.
A V6 G8 will likely start in the mid 20s and top out in the upper 20s completely loaded. A V8 G8 GT will start just over $30k and top out over $35k with all options.
Dodge doesn't have a problem moving loaded HEMI Chargers over $35k, Daytonas and SRTs can be ever more expensive. Most RWD performance cars from foreign automakers cost even more. That's what cars of this caliber go for.
injunraiv 10-02-2007, 02:44 PM The base model — priced from $27,595 — features a 261 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with 250 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful G8 GT — starting at $29,995 — delivers 362 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque thanks to a 6.0-liter V8.

shorod 10-03-2007, 10:42 AM I don't mind saying that I am VERY GLAD to be wrong about the pricing!!!! Make mine a bright red GT!!!
