Has anyone who has done this had any problems with the charging or A/C system. The HVAC on my car sucks compared to the last few vehicles I have owned and my car goes into batery protect if I let the radio run too long with the car off... so will underdriving these components by 25% render them completly useless?

No sir. The a/c is not underdriven. The batteries in these cars suck. I am about to put a optima in mine. I had 2 charge mine 2 times before pullies, but not since. I know the alt will last longer because the alt does not scream anymore at hi rpms. Charlie

Weird, I haven't had a single problem with my battery.

GRRRR8
07-02-2008, 08:05 AM
A lot of times the batteries are not fully charged, or are weak due to the time the car was built, to the time u actually receive the vehicle. I have had 2 new cars that the 2nd day I owned them I came out and the car was dead. Not a nice phone call for them.:slap: Anytime you have a trunk mount battery make sure its a good 1. It is not an issue due to location because M-benz and BMW have them in the back as well as other cars, I just think it is not holding a charge correctly. Like I said, this has nothing to do will the pullies.

SO would you suggest upgrading the battery when going with the pulley?

p.s. I had the StolenFox H-Pipe installed yesterday and same thing: You have a what.? G5 or G6? no.. G8GT! idiots haha

If u are not having any issues, no need to worry. i am just doing it because I have a weak battery, and I will have a few power draws in the future.

Ok ...soo for a non mechanic..never put one of these on...and I have only..basic tools...how hard is this install?
DOes it need to be "timed" and tuned ?

GRRRR8

No timing or tuning required. Takes more then basic tools. U might have a professional do it.

how is the ac not underdriven? the whole point of an underdrive pully is to slow down the accesories...

Different belt same pulley. On my LS1 the 25% underdrive pulley required a smaller A/C belt. An underdrive pulley will underdrive the A/C on LSx engines.

You only have to change the main drive belt, alt-p/s-w-pump. I have this pulley from New Era so I only bought 1 belt and only the outer part of the pulley toward the radiator is underdriven.

The underdrive pulley does not underdrive the AC on G8's , and on all c5 and c6 corvettes , case closed .

The SLP/Powerbond pulley that I have is the same diameter for the A/C drive section as the stock pulley that I removed.

I just finished installing this pulley today.

Give this one careful thought. You will need a three jaw puller, I borrowed one. It was a pain in the ass to install. If you don't have access to air tools, I'd seriously pay someone else to do this.

I think Mike at New Era has posted he gets $60 for the install, trust me, it's worth it.

Yes. After assisting on a few log distance I have found that just beacause I say its easy, does not make it so. I have 250k in tools, and over 25 years experience, so yes its easy for those 2 reasons. For 60-100 bucks, let the pros do it

Charlie, I can't thank you enough for the tips and tricks.

I grew up in my fathers auto repair shop and worked on cars for many years. I helped him build two drag cars (one that held both ends of the NHRA B/Stock record for 4 years in the '90's).

This was a pain, now I remember why I cook food and sell booze now...

I had the A/C belt come of a few times after installing the powerbond balancer and put a slightly smaller belt on to fix the issue. Whilt the new balancer is supposed to be the same size for the A/C it's isn't exactly so, in my case anyway.
The stock A/c belt size is 4pk 1101 and I have a 1090 on it now but have a 1080 to replace it with next time I decide to get my hands dirty.
Main belt is 6pk 1900 but when I can source an 1880 I will replace it.

cheers

Wait, wait, wait...you mean this thing is harder to install than one on say a 5.3 in a truck??? How is that possible when its basically the same engine or have I not looked hard enough at the LS2's/L76's??? I think I need to go look in the garage for a second...

Got 8?

Got 8?
07-05-2008, 10:06 AM
No installer tool just a three jaw puller to remove it, but wait...I thought I remember somewhere reading awhile back about the pulley being different on the LS2 and it WAS harder to pull, something about the puller having a harder time grabbing hold of the newer pulley. Ah...I've been out of the modding scene a few years and I think it's catching up to me. Thanks for the tips and sorry for the rant...

Unfortunaely I am going to be in Iraq over fall and winter so will not be doing much modding until early next summer. Unfortunately I am "stuck" with a stock car until I leave. The down payment took a little more out of me than I was expecting, and I had a couple of unforseen expenses. I should have a litle spare change to order parts online whilst I am over there and I can have them all installed as soon as I get back. I figure a bunch of new stuff will be out by spring as well. Then hopefully I can get up to Michigan and have VMS do a custom tune on their dyno as opposed to a mail in one.

I do have a lot of experience with single T,TT, Whipple and Procharger. You cant go wrong. U have to watch the longevity of trans, short block and diff if u abuse the car. It will last if tuned correctly and dont exceed power levels of stock components. Hope this helps. Charlie

New Bolt? did I miss something? Thought you'd only have to get an extra belt?

If I go and buy the belt, and take it to any local shop like say a 'Walts' do they need anything else? Would they have the right puller etc? Now i'm starting to get worried they'll take the car apart and not be able to put it back together haha

Torqued
07-10-2008, 10:36 AM
If I remember correctly the bolt is a torque to yield and needs about 250ft/lbs. ASP has install intructions on there website. The new bolt should cost less than $10 at the dealer. Don't skimp. You don't want that coming off or loose and messing up the end of the crank.

SteveXKR
07-10-2008, 10:43 AM
OK so besides the pulley I'll need the belt and now this bolt.. any part#?

G8 Ray
07-10-2008, 03:18 PM
The part number for the GM bolt: 12557840
If you go by the instructions GM provides it's 2 bolts. Install new pulley
1) Torque bolt to 240 ft lbs. Remove bolt
2) Install new bolt and torque to 37 ft lbs
3) Torque 140 degrees

Charlie or someone else can chime in here. I believe he used an ARP bolt which is not a torque to yield.
GM book hours are 1.2 for R&R pulley's.
