: Roto-Fab CAI Check engine light?

I installed a Roto-Fab CAI and after about 100 miles the Check Engine Light has come on.

I double checked the installation and the MAF sensor and it all looks good.

Anyone else had this problem??

I'm going to reset the codes and see if it comes back.

Should I have reset the computer after the install?? Could filter oil be getting on the MAF sensor??

Any ideas would be helpfull.

I'm going to get the specific codes when I get home (thats where the code reader is.)

I don't think anyone has posted a code after the install. I just installed mine.
Lets get that code posted up. :D

pull the code or go to autozone and have them pull it for you and post it up! It may not be a result from your CAI install.

I am interested in this...since i have the rotofab...I think once the other day I got a wierd hesitation..it did it twice..kinda wierd....but that was a one time deal...Id like to know if the oil in the filter is causing any problems...

I installed mine last week.. no codes, but yeah one time a weird hesitation on an on ramp. haven't had it since

I Checked the codes and I think it was my fault I got the light. The codes were:

P0201 -- Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 1
C3101 -- Fault Def Not available or Manufacturer Specific

Pending codes were/are:

P0171 -- Fuel Trim too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 -- Fuel Trim too Lean (bank 2)

So, It looks like an Injector wire must have been bumped the wrong way while removing the engine cover I guess. I wiggled all the connectors and reset the codes and it didn't come back.

Sorry for the false alarm, The CAI is very well made and the instructions very easy to follow. I highly recommend it.

Thanks to all who replied.

i have a roto fab kit as well and sometimes when i try to rev the engine, it seems like it does not build the rpm's like it should. Almost a hesitation. Has anyone had that problem?

Once I did the air mods and and tune, it was gone. Would u hesitate if u took a huge gulp of hot air?

I had a weird hesitation today as well, where the car bogged. It's the first time I've had that happen, and the RotoFab has been on the car for about 150 miles. I'll have to keep an eye on it. All I know is, the A4 (my buddy driving) took me while my car choked on itself.

I was looking to see in everybody's posts if you have a tune to go with your roto-Fab. Didn't I read that one of the reasons it makes better than expect power is that it leans the overly-rich OEM mixture? When i saw the report of Fuel Trim too low, i wondered if the R-F in conjunction with other mods but no tune might lean it out too much.

Found this thread today as it relates to me I think. I installed my New Roto-Fab CAI last week with great success. After about 100 miles, I was on my way to work this morning and the check engine light came on. I havent seen many other people with the same issue but thought I would post it up here and see. How can I check the error codes? Do I need a dashhawk tool to do it? I am not that technical with new cars, so Im kinda lost. FYI car has 4k miles on it. How can I reset the check Engine light without bringing it to the dealer? How can I check the error codes without bringing it to a dealer? thanks fellow G8-ers

Go to Autozone and pull codes. More then likely the passenger front injector plug is not fully seated. Make sure the rubber hose is attached to the Roto-Fab.

Thanks GRRRR8: I will take to autozone asap. As for the hose, that sucker is ON THERE! When we installed the CAI I remember having to really give that sucker some force to make sure it was on all the way and flush on the connector, so I don't think that is the issue. Both ends are connected nicely.

I will post here if I find anything out.

no. Just hit the onstar button and ask them what it is.. they'll tell you.

UPDATE!

Ok, got the error code, it is: I=MORON

So, I could not sit here in my office wondering what the hell is wrong. After reading some threads here, I went out and checked the gas cap, I knew that was not it. i started the car a couple times, light stayed lit. Popped the hood, started to look around, checked the hoses....well WTF is this? My CAI inlet elbow had come loose from the hose it was clamped to. I guess I did not tighten it enough! I was afraid to really torque on it, but that mother is getting the air wrench tonight!!

:banghead:

Although I am embarassed to admit this "slight" oversight, I had to be honest here and take the blame. The CAI unit is fantastic when installed by someone other than me.

Having never made a mistake myself I can't see where you're coming from but have to give you kudos for coming out and admitting it.:)

Yes, I love these boards. I have been coming here since I was thinking about buying my G8 and read through it daily to hear what people are doing with their rides.

I hope to get to your lower panel and hood scoop mods this weekend! And then my VMS tune! :)

Thanks again!

Hey, since we are discussing it, can anyone advise the BEST place to locate the hose clamp where the air inlet elbow connects up to the motor intake? It would be that clamp around the rubber hose piece that the inlet elbow slips inside of. I know that the directions said to push that inlet elbow all the way in, and flush with the intake, so should the clamp be closest to the motor? Or closest to the end of the rubber hose that it is around?

Thanks all u cool G8 cats

My clamp is about 1/4" back of the throttle body. I think it could be moved closer, but it's on there solid. Just don't over tighten.

I will say I like the clamps that NEP provides with their CAI over the RotoFab clamps.

Having had both, thats my opinion.

Thanks. So what exactly is overtightening on these clamps? Obviously I was TOO cautious the first time since the inlet elbow slipped out of the hose. Should I torque it by hand until it is snug? Or tighten until it becomes difficult to turn? Or clamp down until I cant turn anymore and then stop? Im a pretty big guy and routinely twist to maximum allowable torqueage :)

As tight as u can without breaking!

The best clamp location is about 1/4-3/8" back from the end of the elbow. You want the clamp behind the lip at the end of the tube. The lip is for hose retention. You may have had the clamp on top of the lip, then when it shifted off the lip, it would be loose. We supply non-perforated clamps because they don't damage silicone hose. The downside of them is they don't have the worm gear engagement that a perforated clamp has. Therefore, they are easier to strip out. I like to grasp the head of the ratchet with my hand to tighten the clamps. It makes me more aware of how tight I'm getting them. You should clearly see the hose indent when tightening, but they will strip if you overtighten! BTW, I am sending you a pm about your other things. Your engine covers will ship tomorrow and the look really good!

I just had the same problem driving home - "Check Engine" light came on, and OnStar said it was "lean fuel" (didn't tell me the exact, code, and I forgot to ask). When I got home, I looked under the hood and my elbow had come loose from the air intake. I don't feel bad though as *I* didn't do the install<g>.

So I just put it back on and tightened it up. Hopefully, that will take care of my warnings.

This problem ended up being a bad fuel pump in my car and nothing to do with the CAI.

I'm Putting the Roto-Fab CAI back on when I get my car back someday (in shop waiting for part).

I did actually take a series of pics while installing mine. I guess I will get my lazy butt around to posting it up for a DIY. :) Hope your install went well, if not, Ill have some pics up soon. The install directions were excellent and pretty straight forward, so not a lot to post I guess. The one thing I found tricky was needing to actually bend the metal tab hanging down off of where the negative terminal is. it needed to literally be bent around to the top side in order for the new box to slide into place. once I figured that out it was easy to get in. hard to see here, but the little tab you can see bent up was originally pointed down and was in the way of the box sliding into place.
