: Wood Dash installed in White GT
Rob Moser 07-09-2008, 11:24 PM Installed a real wood Platinum Burl kit in my G8. Hoping photos appear, first time trying to insert photos in my posts. Install was rather easy. Very hot day helped the pieces stick.

A couple different angles. The wood is attached to 3M tape. It has a heavy burl look.
RRM
Rob Moser 07-09-2008, 11:54 PM Thought the interior was a bit plain. There are many alternatives including many real carbon fiber kits that compliment the red-black interior. Realize it isn't for everyone. Personally wish a neutral interior was offered, but only available overseas. Got this from a non-sponsor, but there are similar kits available from G8 Board Sponsors.

overdone and I don't like(hate) stickers
but the actual wood is not as bad as I was expecting
Stingpac 07-10-2008, 03:35 AM Sorry .. don't like it ...
and if it HAD ta be done .. the wood should've been darker in color.
Looks like a well designed and well installed kit. Good job.

Where did you get that kit and what company made it? I am getting the red/black carbon fiber kit.
97DARKKNIGHT 07-10-2008, 06:35 AM Where did you get that kit and what company made it? I am getting the red/black carbon fiber kit.
Post pics when you do
G8 Ray 07-10-2008, 06:35 AM Wow, what a huge difference. That IS a lot of pieces. Do you have a price or location to where you got them?
Madhatter73 07-10-2008, 06:38 AM It looks higher quality than many kits I've seen... Personally, if I was into wood in my car, I would have only covered the brushed aluminum and used a darker wood, but to each his own...
Nice clean install.
97DARKKNIGHT 07-10-2008, 06:39 AM Nice job Rob. It makes the car look more classy as if it wasnt already. Id like to see different ones too. Where can i go to see other options? You said that was real wood? not stickers or some cheap crap right?
VENOM 07-10-2008, 07:18 AM Looks almost orange to me. I agree that a darker color would look better, but nice install and nice pieces
PMD G8 07-10-2008, 07:54 AM I'm not into wood grain dashes on a sporty vehicle like the G8 but this doesn't look THAT bad. I'm not feeling the steering wheel though, should have just left that alone. In all, it would probably look better if the interior was a lighter color.
foreosu 07-10-2008, 08:05 AM Yikes, not a fan of that. Workmanship looks good, but I'm just not into the wood. Doesn't seem to fit this type of car. Just my opinion.
4gasem 07-10-2008, 08:25 AM Not my taste but if we all liked the same thing then this world would be a boring place!
Jag has a nice smoky looking burl they use in one of their cars that I think would lend itself to the G8.
Personally I like the aluminum look but would prefer it to be real.
Oh and if someone goes C.F. it HAS to be real or you're just a poser! Even the under bonnet stuff needs to be real...:)
RacerxG8 07-10-2008, 08:41 AM I've been thinking about doing the same thing to mine. Thanks for the pics! Looks like it suits this car perfectly. However, I do agree one of the darker woods would look better.

Rob Moser 07-10-2008, 08:49 AM There were several pieces that I didn't install. I got the company name from a previous thread. Would describe as blonde, but definitely not ORANGE. Agree there may be too much wood. They actually offer 2 more optional kits to cover even more items. You can also get "fake" wood look for about 30% less. Cost of the main kit and opt. door kit was just under $320. shipped. Carbon fiber kits are same price as real wood. Took 3 weeks as it is mfg. to order.
RRM
PMD G8 07-10-2008, 09:01 AM I think something darker, like what was used in older Denalis would fit the interior better.
http://images.minitruckinweb.com/features/chevy/0702tr_06_z+chevrolet_avalanche+custom_interior.jp g
asylum 07-10-2008, 09:27 AM looks better than i expected actually! definitely brings the interior to life, even if its not quite the grain i would have chosen.
i guess they do kits with other materials like carbon fibre and brushed alloy for everyone else :D
Rob Moser 07-10-2008, 09:52 AM I have an 03' Denali XL with the "darker grey-brown wood look" THERE IS NO COMPARISON IN QUALITY! DENALI looks like plastic. This product is wood. Pix don't do the product justice. I would have installed something a bit darker but all of the other woods had a lot of reddish tones to them. I have had those woods in other cars over the years and I just wanted something different. There were 6 real woods, 10 Real Carbon Fiber, and 11 fake woods to choose from. Carbon Fiber look would perhaps fit the car better, but I still wanted wood. To each his own.... If I get sick of it, I can take it out and replace it with a diff. look.... Presto..... "A NEW CAR" !!!!!!!
RRM
G8 Lover 07-10-2008, 10:15 AM I think it's well done and looks good. I would have held back on the steering wheel and the door pull surrounds though. The rest looks great.
I also was wanting a lighter interior as the show in pics from down under. This does help lighten it up some.
PMD G8 07-10-2008, 10:27 AM Do they have a website so I can look at the other choices? If you don't want to post it then you can PM it to me.
RacerxG8 07-10-2008, 10:48 AM Don't know if this is the same one he's using. I don't see any vendors on here selling this kind of stuff, so it should be ok to post this.
http://www.wooddashexperts.com/customer/home.php?cat=19243
Russo 07-10-2008, 11:05 AM not my style, but it looks like it's put together well... i would personally put an aluminum kit or maybe CF if the pieces were authentic material and not a stick-on...
Rob Moser 07-10-2008, 11:10 AM Place looks familiar.... And... they have metal kits also.
Wife thought I should take the piece off below the idiot lights but it's so smooth, I can get great suction for my Garmin mount without the "puck". Steering wheel and speaker accents look better in person but jury is still out on whether they stay. Long door accents make interior look much larger.
No matter what finish, color, etc. If you like a change you will be happy with the quality and relative ease of installation.

+1. I'm not a fan of the color, but props for doing something different. Black wood (as someone mentioned before) might look really good. And real carbon fiber.
tntempest 07-10-2008, 01:35 PM It reminds me of a '83 cadillac coupe deville interior my grandfather had.
With that said it looks extremely high quality and a value for the amount you get, one of the darker colors as said before may look better. All the factory fake wood in my 540 sport was cracking by the time I sold it. I would like to see it in the dark mahogany that was posted above.
RacerxG8 07-10-2008, 02:19 PM Just ordered the dark mahogany kit for the dash, and the carbon fiber for the overhead sunroof control area. Will post pics.........:driving:
G8>550i 07-10-2008, 03:17 PM There were several pieces that I didn't install. RRM
Thanks for posting it. Yes it looks good but I would have left off a couple more pieces. Like the console and center stack very much except for the piece on top, would have left that off, looks tacked on. Ditto the pieces covering the front dash corner vents...but maybe you need them to make the door pieces look good.
How is the fit on the doors? I thought they would do the entire area where the "technical" material is. Looks like they leave the top alone. How is the seam between the wood and the technical material on top look?
If this is all held on just with 3M tape, will it fly off after a couple of years of enduring the G8 GT's G forces?
not my cup of tea, but nice install.
OrangeTiger 07-10-2008, 04:07 PM Just finished mine last night. I used real "African Zebra" wood. Dark like mahogony, but has straight grain.
I'll post in a new thread tomorrow after I get pixs taken. But I love it, the dark wood really dresses it up. I'm still playing on which pieces I keep. I bought another center stack and the lower plastic around the shifter, so I can mix and match a little. I haven't put the large pieces on the doors yet, still undecided.
I got mine from Wooddashexperts too. The kits is a Sherwood kit, which is the best out there, IMO.
Great job on the install though! And yes, it's a "to each his own" thing with dash kits, but I love them. I've had them in my last 6 cars, sometimes wood, brushed alum. and CF.
Slizzo 07-10-2008, 08:23 PM I like the look of the trim, I just think there's too many pieces of it in your car.
Could have done without the trim on the steering wheel (maybe black out or mute the silver trim on the wheel) and around the shifter.
Well, and around some of the other areas in the center of the dash.
Ha, I think there's just too much going on with all that you have attached to the interior.
I do like the trim on the doors though! Makes some nice contrast on the door where it's really needed in my opinion.
RumblingG8 07-10-2008, 09:29 PM Great job of installing! I did not find it that easy when I put a kit on my GTO. I ended up ordering three kits from Wood Dash Experts. I started with the same color you have, didn't like it so I pulled it off (my fingernails were killing me by the time I was done). Then I installed a darker wood and didn't like that. Ended up with real carbon fiber. You can remove it but you better be ready to install another kit as it does ruin the plastic underneathe. I actually wished I had never done it but the GTO is a much different car than the G8. I did it to a 2000 Grand Am I had and really liked it on that car.
I'm eager to see the Zebra dash pics as I have been strongly thinking about buying one of those kits for my G8. I thought I would only put the pieces on that they show on the kit at JHP so if the exchange rate ever comes down and it becomes affordable, I could order it and replace the pieces.
Monaro@JHP 07-10-2008, 10:04 PM Don't know if this is the same one he's using. I don't see any vendors on here selling this kind of stuff, so it should be ok to post this.

supersport79 07-11-2008, 12:24 AM You did a great job installing the kit. I just would have done the center console and left the aluminum look materials alone (stirring wheel and dash trim). Anyway, great install and looks much better than I though it would.

To me the red doesnt match the seat red or red of the gauges.
Gingerbread Man 07-11-2008, 12:36 PM hmmmmm at least it doesnt look like crap quality. Thats what sets it in. Hard to really come up with an opinion.

Yeah. I thought about it until the price made me laugh. I'd rather pull out the existing trim and have a local paint shop do it for half the price, with it matching. (that red doesnt flow in the pics above)

i like to see you try to get anywhere close to that quality and finish for half the price.
it actually matches interior very well and that's one of the biggest things people drool over when looking at my car. The lightest specks in the carbon fiber image is pretty good match to the interior too. Of course they have metallic in them and interior is matte finish.

Dede, just put some jets on it and make it fly already!! I love the car man. It's a great example of what you can do with hard work and time and passion that goes into modifying a car.
appletonrc 07-11-2008, 07:29 PM I think I would like it better if it was a darker wood grain.
Rob Moser 07-11-2008, 11:02 PM I removed the u shaped piece at the top of the dash surrounding the speaker. On a trip to Illinois the past 2 days (23.8 mpg) I looked in every high end car to compare woods. Black Lexus 460L had black interior with dark mahogany wood. Way toooooo dark! Older Lexus 400 with neutral interior had burl like mine, though it was not as yellow. Have decided this look is more sporty than a darker color. The edges of the door panel wood are rounded and fit quite tight, not perfect but close. Wondering if it will change color over time and if so, will it be lighter, darker.
After 5K I finally saw another GT on the road. A loaded black one, driving of all places, in my neighborhood. Poor sucker was from Minne - soda so he had a front plate.....(A skeeter deflecter!) Now my wife wants black.

Your dash looks great. You can always say 'what if', no matter what you do. My experience with wooddashexperts is that it will stay true to color for alot longer than you own the car.

Attorneyguy 07-14-2008, 08:53 PM At first I thought the wood grain looked like a monstrosity. But now I'm starting to really like it upon second glance. In fact, it reminds me of my Atari 2600 from 1983 with the black case and wood grain trim. (Remember those?) And with the Atari dislay in the middle of the G8's console, this totally makes sense! Now if you get Pitfall to start playing in the center display, that would be the ultimate!
