I purchased a leather wrapped center console lid from RedLineGoods.com about a month ago. I finally got around to installing it! Happy with the result, leather is nice and tight. It also matches the seats.

I decided to put together an installation guide for the lid, in case anyone else would like to do the same modification.

I believe they will be listing the product on their website, not sure what pricing will be.

Anyhow, guide below & attached.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Tools Needed:
Phillips Screwdriver

Time Needed:
10 Minutes

Instructions:
1) Open console lid (Figure 1)
2) Unscrew 6 screws circled in red (Figure 2)
3) Separate console lid from backing plate, tabs circled in red (Figure 3)
4) Connect new leather wrapped lid to backing plate
5) Begin to screw in leather wrapped lid; the lid will “click” into the tabs.
6) Finished! (Figure 4)

FYI - I believe you have to install the padding yourself onto the new shipped cover. This is to make sure it fits correct with the increased height due to the new padding. They explain it on the site, and i think i am reading correct?
This requires a bit more work. However they say you might want to have a profession interior shop perfom this?

Here is quote from site
"Before you purchase, please take the following into account: what you will receive is a leather armrest cover, made taller according to your selection of padding thickness and the necessary padding foam sized to the base of your armrest. It will be up to you to install it on your armrest. Depending on the shape of the armrest you might need to trim the edges of the foam slightly (any sharp knife will get the job done) and glue the foam to the armrest and/or the two layers of foam together. You might want to consider having the padding installed professionally in an interior shop."

Hey CntryClub. Does the 3/4" pad make the console lid the same level as te arm rest, or will it take the thicker padding?

It looks like those 6 screws and the clips hold it on. I'm assuming when you order the regular thickness it will come with the cover attached to a backing plate that will clip on and them screw on. Correct me if I'm wrong CntryClub007.

Looks great. I just saw a post on a Redline console on the GTO forum and was wondering what the G8 lid would like....The answer? Fantastic!! I think this is on my short list of mods as the stock console lid seems very cheap and out of place in the G8.

If this is anything like the one I did on my car (the Magnum) the cover will fit snuggly over the lid. If you got padding you can use glue to hold it in place but not always necessary (tape might work). You will need to work the cover some to get it tight and wrinkle free. The edges of the cover would fit behind the backing plate and when attached, it would hold the cover tight. You can also use tape to keep it tight while attaching the plate if you prefer. Mine was only two pieces so this may be a little different. I also removed my stock rubber cover.

So got my cover on Saturday, just got it installed. Black is def the color to get, matches perfect.
Product is good leather with some elastic around the bottom that slips over the current lid. Was a little lose at first, but i just worked it a little and it smoothed out.
Only problem was after getting it on tight the elastic covered the slots where the tabs click into. I just took a little pocket knife and cut slits in the elastic. Reattached and its looking good.

Sorry I'm a little confused, if ordered with the padding you have to glue/apolster it yourself? But if you order the standard height with no padding its just a clip in deal? I want to order one and would like it to be taller but I don't really want an apolstry job.

The pic I posted was colby's.
By the sound of it, these have elastic around the edge to hold it tight. When you order it with padding, I believe they make it alittle taller to compensate for it. I could be wrong but maybe someone who got the padding will confirm it. Mine should be here this weekend with padding so i'll update if someone hasn't by then.

I purchased the padding with mine and it seems like more leather but still not enough (some elastic showing). I am going to remove the rubber cover and get another piece of foam and then install the cover over just the foam, I did this on my SUV years ago. It is nice cover, I just need more leather.

Top Gun

Its not a hard job even with padding. You will get the cover and padding seperate. YOu just place the padding on the stock lid, and then place the cover on top of that. Once it is reinstalled it will be tight. The use of glue or tape is just to keep the padding from sliding around during the install. Some trimming of the padding might be required as well.

Ordered mine (black on black - no extra padding) on 2/21 and received it yesterday. The color matches pretty good, not 100% in my opinion, but close.

Installation wasn't too bad, but my cover was a little too big and the elastic was in the way of the little tabs that snap the lid to the console tray. I didn't worry too much about it because it seems that the 6 screws that hold the lid in place keeps everything tight.

Received mine yesterday, black w/silver stitching & 3/4" padding. I tried it with removing the stock rubber cover and padding but the sides didn't seem right (hallow or bulging). I tried with both the stock padding and new padding and again, it bulged on the sides. I trimmed the padding narrower and used the stock cover and although it isn't perfect, it's better. I'm going to get other padding and try a few other ways. I tried fitting it between the plastic on the lid and like was stated, it will interfere with the screws/clips so I left it on the outside of it. The cover is fine quality but the seams on the top are narrower than the base so the padding will have to be angled, I think. To remove the lid, it's easier to work on, I've added some pics. Top piece is and center piece are held in with clips. Remove the 4 outer screws as seen in the pic. The rear piece will then pull off. Pry the tabs holding the lid in place, can be a pain, to remove the lid.

If you look at my previous pics, i had buldging on the sides too. Last night I trimmed a little more off the padding to round off the corners and I used some duct tape to hold the padding tight against the stock lid. I also pulled the leather a little tighter. Buldge is gone and looks alot better to me. I'll take some more pics later.

When I first tried to install the cover over the factory lid using their foam I had a tough time trying to make the cover look adequate with the foam they supplied, so I ended up going to an upholstery shop and purchased the proper foam (according to them) and affixed the foam to the bracket with Super 77 and then cut it the exact size of the bracket. I then sprayed the edges of the foam with Super 77 and slipped the leather cover on, it was not easy since the adhesive was clinging to the leather quicker than I imagined which made getting seam straight quite a challenge.

Got mine in yesterday. Went with the Voilety Blue for the top and Black for the sides. The color is a bit dark but I wanted a darker blue so it works for me. The finish is excellent. Its very nicely put together. The fit is a bit off. 10 minutes to install is optimistic. It took me well over an hour to do this. I ended up using a spray adhesive to keep it in place, but I still couldn't get the sides to stay tight. I only got 2 of the clips to click back into place. The others won't fit cause the leather prevents the sides of the panel from setting back into place. I had to cut small slits to even allow the clips to click back in. It's a tight fit but it worked in the end. I might end up taking it to have it professionally installed but for now it will work.

So i ordered the 6/8 foam and yes, i understand that's the same thing as 3/4 but whatever. My impression is that the additional leather that they give you when you order that thickness of foam is actually too much leather. Once you stretch the leather enough to properly compress the foam into a good looking shape, there is basically too much leather and elastic in the way underneath, preventing proper re-assembly of the plastic backing plate. It's almost like what would be perfect is the 6/8 foam without additional leather. That way when you stretched the holy hell out of the leather in order to make the foam conform to the proper shape, it would be tight and not interefere with re-assembly. Hopefully i explained that in a way that makes sense.

So if i were to do it again I would order without Extra padding (and thereby no extra leather) and then just buy some foam from hobby lobby and install the stock leather but with foam underneath. All of the above is assuming that you leave the stock rubber pad in place.

As is, it will still work, it's just that stretching the leather hard enough to make the foam look nice is going to mean that when you put the plastic backing plate back on you probably wont be able to get the clips to clip and you will probably be screwing right through the leather. Neither or those are a big deal, but less than ideal imo. I will probably go buy an even thicker foam and cut it so that when i stretch the "6/8" leather tight enough to give the proper shape i wont have extra leather impeding the re-assembly process. Hope this makes sense.

I just bought some thicker foam and am going to trim to fit. I think it will look and hold fine if the elastic isn't interfering with the clips. I know what you're saying rhedd, I thought the same thing.

To me it looks like Burgundy matches the red of the shifter the best. I didn't show the red next to the shifter because it is a brighter red than the perforated red is. The black matches the seats the best. It has the same texture. The Charcoal isn't dark enough and the perforated black is too dark. This is my opinion through my colorblind eyes, so I could be way off. If anyone wants to see any of the other colors offered, let me know.

Hi,

I don't think you're color blind at all, what you said makes perfect sense and fully agrees with what's shown on the photos!

Have a great day,

Thank you. That was my disclaimer because the colors I see are not always what the colors really are, especially with shades of colors.

I went with Black Leather & Alcantara piping with 6/8 padding. I wound up trimming the supplied foam and placing it on top of the factory foam.

Here's a pic:

http://www.g8board.com/forums/album.php?albumid=1298&pictureid=7149

Which of the 2 colors is the closer match to the seats/interior: in your opinion?

The black is an excellent match. The Alcantara appears slightly lighter and doesn't really match anything else in the car, but it looks OK as piping.

Although at first I thought the regular stitching (without piping) looked better in pictures, I've notice the piping lines up with the rest of the console and it looks fine as well.

Got mine installed last night. I really like it. Fit is not perfect(but its close and for $65--awesome), but looks very good and is much better than the stock looking rubber lid. Took some time to get it stretched tight enough and it is much easier to take the whole assembly out of the car to get it installed.
Black with black stripes and black stitching and no additional padding installed over the stock padding and rubber lid.

I got mine in black. I replaced the stock foam with 3/4 inch foam and did not reuse the plastic cover. Fits good, feels much better. Pleanty of leather to cover the thicker foam.

Installed mine today 'cause I finally had 10 free minutes, LOL. Black with no extra padding. Looks great, but a little loose fitting. If it doesn't shrink a bit, I'll just restretch it later. Overall, great product and well worth the money!

Installed mine today. Black with 6/8" padding. Ended up throwing away the padding that came with it and used upholstery padding. Fits well and looks much better. I may need to do a little more trimming at the front as the first time I latched it shut I couldn't get it open. Took quite a bit of maneuvering to get it open. Nice inexpensive mod.

FYI, I ordered the leather samples and the black is a much closer match than the charcoal.

I haven't decided on padding thickness yet so I'll wait a bit longer nefore ordering.

Go with 6/8 inch. I personally like it a lot better. It's just definitely comfortable enough and doesn't make the armrest look too big. I ONLY recommend 1 1/8inch if by default the armrest is too low in the car for your seat position and your elbow hangs over it rather than rest on it.

Funny thing is, the Nissan GT-R is considered an ultimate sports car. I'm a trained autocross driver and I always push my seat all the way down to feel the car more and I also drive in the correct racing position. Despite all that, the armrest on that car was too low for me. An interesting design mistake to have made on such an awesome car. And no, didn't buy it, out of my pricing league. :)

Just installed mine. Black with Orange stitching. Looks and feels much better then the stocker POS. Did the extra foam over the stock cover and foam. Took all of 15 minutes to install using the write ups in this thread. Much easier to install after removing completely.

In my case, not as long as they estimated. Mine shipped on the 14th and this is part of the email they sent:

Your order is in the mail and it shouldn`t be long before it arrives. Thank you for your business.

We ship from the European Union via priority mail. It should arrive within 6-10 business days from the day of dispatchment. It`s a very good shipping method but there is NO TRACKING NUMBER.

Their website said it should arrive on the 24th, but I got it last Saturday (19th). It did take about 4 days or so after I ordered before it shipped.

Just received mine (I'll try & post some pics after the snow melts & I can take a picture outside...too dark in the garage). The quality is quite good, but to fit it properly is beyond my abilities. I ended up taking it to someone who knows what their doing, cause it takes a bit of working to get the thing taut. Also not sure how well he'll be able to get it worked in around the "indent" in the front to access the button to pop the lid open.

Mine showed up in the mail from Poland on Tuesday and I set about doing the install.

I decided to not use any adhesive and used a heavy duty sewing kit to stitch it together- all the stitching is hidden under the plastic plate pulling the leather tight.
I placed it over the original foam and rubber to give it a little more padding. Than I cut the slits in the leather to allow the plastic tabs on the base plate to pass through and here is what I ended up with..

I bought one of these covers, it's awesome, just follow those instructions and that way the cover is nice an secure under the bottom black panel. It wraps right around the original rubber top lid part, than screw the two parts back together and everything comes together with a nice factory look. Only minor complaint is it's a little difficult to open the lid, but well worth the new look... perfect match...

Ben, I found if you spray the inside edge with contact cement and stretch the leather it will conform to the recess in the original rubber top and allow the latch to open easier. It also keeps the cover tight I glued it all the way around while stretching.

Tom,

That's smart advice. I got the thing in one night after work and rushed to install it not thinking through more final solutions. Since it's easy enough to take back apart I think I'll try your solution, great idea, and I'm sure it'll help provide that extra little bit of over all tighting I'm wanting.

Otherwise, I love the look. It looks completely like a factory design which is just how I like my cars to look...

Ben, also I would recommend putting it in the sun or using a heat gun/hair dryer to warm up the leather. It will be much easier to stretch.
