I got an assignment to England, taking the wifes G8. May sell the GTO and buy a VXR8. From what I read I have to do some small light modifications to meet UK standards.

I think there was a guy who shipped his G8 overseas to Wales.

Hey, are you going to RAF Chicksands? I spent two years there. Either way make sure you go have a few snake bites in the pubs. The farther you get from the bases the more the birds (girls) will dig ya. Close to base you will be scum but further out is a different story. What is your AFSC?

Have fun, mate! Lakenheath is a good assignment. I spent a couple years down at RAF Woodbridge back in the '70s (before they closed it). Get a good car and get out and explore. I think they still have the aero club there if you want to get the aerial tour!

Maybe you can get a spot in the Top Gear audience!

Spent 6 years stationed at Lakenheath as a CE guy and I can give you a pretty good run down on how everything will work. I left March 2010 so unless drastic changes have been introduced this should be accurate on what you will have to do.

Firstly, your car will have to be converted to make the vehicle British spec, since the G8 already has amber rear turn signals and side markers the only light conversion they will have to do is mount a rear fog light and change the direction of your headlights. Should cost you about $150 at a local shop. Once your light conversion is done, You will then be able to register the vehicle.

Since it is less than 3 years old (It states 09 in your sig) you wont have to deal with the MOT which is their pain in the ass vehicle inspection. So the process will be pretty simple. SF will work everything for you at Pass and ID in the MPF. You are given 30 days upon delivery of the vehicle to get all this done. Its pretty painless but will feel like a nightmare as you will be right into your PCS.

Some other things to consider. Front license plates are mandatory. If you dont have a front plate housing get one done stateside ahead of time to save you the hassle. Also, gas prices are downright insane on the economy. Since you are already shipping one V8 I would not suggest attempting to buy another one. Get some cheap british spec 4 banger to fly around in.

Some other things to consider non car related. Dont waste your time shipping cheap 110 electrical appliances unless you plan on living in base housing. I chose to rent on the economy because you make way more money that way. I dont know your personal situation with family, kids, wife working and all that but for me living off base was better.

I can give you tons more advice than the Airman Family readiness center can provide. If you have any questions just PM me and I will give you any details you need. Good luck on the PCS, you will be busy but its well worth it. Travel everywhere!!

Congrats on the assignment. I have follow-on orders to Ramstein AB. I will take the GXP. The wife will leave the Tracker, LOL!

Check out the quarantine rules, if you have pets.

Thanks. I checked out the quarantine rules on the AB site. Looks like there is no six month quarantine. I'm going to duble check the on base vet to see what I need to do.

Quarantine can actually start stateside to alleviate the need for boarding of your pet. Just contact a local vet and have them draft up the clean bill of health for the animal and the 6 months can begin while you are still in the states.

Jealous of you guys going to USAFE. I had an absolute blast there. What ever you do make sure you get out and leave the local areas. So many people get assignments in Europe, stay behind the wire and then bitch that it sucks.

BTW, bring touch up paint. Some of those roads can be quite narrow. And passing in a left hand drive car can be very interesting!
