: Tune on 87?
brad02ss 07-21-2008, 12:43 PM I'm drooling over all the cars with the intake/exhaust/tune who seem to be running really well.
My problem is that becuse I drive my G8 GT a lot I also put a lot of gas in it and I want to avoid having to run 93 octane.
Can I get a tune for 87?
Would the power gains be worth it?
How difficult would it be to get a tune for 93 and swap back and forth for racing and regular driving?
What HP and 1/4mi time would I gain with intake and exhaust but no tune?
Thanks
VectorMotorsports 07-21-2008, 01:03 PM The G8 is already tuned for regular unleaded so to do a tune for 87 wouldnt be the most cost effective. The good news is that with our 93 tune the increase in fuel economy should more than offset the price difference from 87 to 91/93. Hope this helps!
brad02ss 07-21-2008, 01:09 PM Thanks, I did see that on your site as well and also sent an e-mail, which I guess you can ignore and just answer my questions here so others can maybe gain some info as well.
What kind of fuel mileage gain are people seeing?
Is this all with stock exhaust? ie- was the 40hp gain on your site done with stock exhaust on the car before and after the intake/tune install?
VectorMotorsports 07-21-2008, 01:20 PM 3+ MPG is typical the tune alone is good for 25-30+ RWHP on 91/93 the tune AND intake is what nets the 40+ RWHP on 93 octane. All of our test vehicles are stock other than the modificatiosn we make for the test so yes a stock exhaust ect.
brad02ss 07-21-2008, 01:25 PM I just did the math, switching to 93 would cost about $4 a tank (even without a gain in fuel mileage), I can deal with that. I'll be getting the tune and intake in a month or so...just bought the girlfriend a stupid chunk of jewelry...
Thanks

tgb321 07-21-2008, 02:01 PM I noticed you have a black car, is it really that much of a pain in the ass to keep it clean? (I've always wanted a black car)

Yes it is.
I live on a dirt road (for now, house is on the market), my car is always dirty.

Yeah its not bad, even if there wasnt any gain. I think I can safely say none of you bought the G8 GT with GREAT fuel economy in mind :) Also there is no such thing as a stupid chunk of jewelry; thats a bargaining chip for later! :D

Really? Can you send a certificate with your tune, stating this? LOL

I got black and love it. First time after two silver cars.
The black color with the chrome gives the G8 an upscale look that makes it look right parked next to a BMW or Lexus GS...which the G8 styling seems to be a combination.

And itis intimidating from the front as well.
Black is a complete PITA, wash and wax at least once a week to keep it acceptable...
A cleanish car in any of the other colours looks better than a black G8 that is as dirty
BUT right after that third layer of wax goes on each friday afternoon there is nothing that can touch it... not even close.

Welcome to the club. It turns out you're not allowed to call her a girlfriend anymore though. If she hasn't started yet... :judge:

He claims he dyno tuned a G8 GT using 87 octane and got 34 rwhp gains.

I'm working on that- trying to get her to return the favor by buying the intake and tune for me.
On the black car subject...yes I have to wash it often to keep it looking good, but it doesn't bother me with a car like this, and when it looks good I absolutely love it. Its worth it. I love black cars. Had a black Tahoe and a black Vette is probably next. They especially look good with dark tinted windows, nice wheels, and plenty of shine on the tires.

Very interesting. Anyone have comments on this? VMS?
I never heard of a tune safely making gains like this on a stock motor without changing fuel, expect for forced induction and diesel motors, but thats different.

Well I think all you have to do is a little searching around here to see that nearly everyone HERE that has tested that theory found very little difference between running the car on 87 and premium. We have never heard nor seen gains like that...

Honestly judging by the baseline and the after power numbers my guess is it had premium in it maybe everyone didnt know ect.. Just saying, we've never seen that before but then again anything is possible :)
