Easily the best thing to come out of the now-defunct Pontiac brand in recent memory was the G8 sports sedan – based on the Australian Commodore. Not only was it an impressive performance machine, but it gave North America a taste of just how good a job Holden is doing down under.

Looking to satisfy that appetite, General Motors will reportedly re-introduce the rear-drive sedan in 2013 as a 2014 model year car. According to GMInsideNews, internal documents regarding the development of the car (code named 'SS Sedan') now have it listed as an approved program.

Delayed several times, the new launch date is designed to follow with the introduction of a new Commodore in Australia.

With the Pontiac brand now gone and no indication from General Motors to revive it, look for a Chevy bowtie to grace the grille of this new rear-drive machine.

This would be great news, just unfortunate it's under the Chevy name :( I went to the car show here in Columbus a couple of weeks ago and I can honestly say outside of the Camaro Convertible and The Corvette, there wasn't a single Chevy I would want to get. They had a Volt there that looked better than I expected, but it's still a 40K Greenie Feelgood car. Screw that

The rest of the line up looked so freaking boring. I could have fell asleep just looking at all of them. A couple of the Buicks looked OK, but again they looked like everything else on the road. Plus I also can't get over the fact that a Buick to me is still a "Grandpa Car" The Grand National is the only Buick I can think of that truly breaks away from that stigma.

The Cadillacs I will say have escaped the Grandpa stigma. A few of them looked great. I'd love to have a new CTS-V, but then I saw the price tag and remembered why I won't be in a Caddy anytime soon LOL.

I know it won't happen but I'd still love to see them bring back Pontiac. Ever since I was a kid, Pontiac to me always represented performance and excitement the GM lineup lacked elsewhere. They always looked better than there Chevy counterpart and always had a bit better performance, well at least in my eyes. LOL. They should have kept the name plate around even if for just a few cars like the G8 and the solstice, although the Saturn Sky actually was the best looking of those two. It would have looked great with the Pontiac logo!!

im guessing its a total redesign of the holden commodore. not just a refresh like the new models that came out last year with the touch screen and all the new goodies

Why don't they wait a few more years. GM are a bunch of clowns. Now is the time for American muscle cars, who knows in a few years. Once again they are missing the boat.

yep i knew it. why would gm bring back a car that was first produced in 2007 this late in the game. gm is going to take the new commodore once holden releases it. cannot wait to see the new commodore. and if its even as good as this one, hopefully i will have a new car choice in 3 or 4 years..

I hope they approve the UTE soon, I been waiting on G8 ST until they canceled it after approving it in Dec 08, was suppose to start manufacturing it in April 09. I have almost given up on GM and waiting for the UTE to come over. I’m starting to look at FORD F150 with Ecoboost engine. The full size truck will not look that good next to my goat, I would prefer to have the UTE next to my goat and full size truck is bit bigger than I really need. But I have to replace my daily driver soon (not that I’m having problems with it, but its 10 years old now), I would like a RWD with lot of power and need lot of cargo space (lot more than what a sedan has).
Got to respect that Ecoboost engine, 365hp 420tq and still gets 16/22 EPA on 5500 pound brick. If I get the F150, I would have to put 5-10K of mods into it right away (first thing is to lower that thing) and almost $40K for the truck. I would really rather like to get the UTE, it would be lot cheaper, but I’m not going to wait forever.

I agree with everything you said. I test drove a new regal (just to get the $50 visa card) and was not impressed. It was ok...but nothing stood out and it carries that ugly Buick grill. In our area, whenever you see a Buick lesabre, get out of the way, cause it's usually some 70-80 year old cruising down the highway. It's doubful i will ever be a GM customer again without Pontiac....but i should never say never. As i get older who knows, maybe i'll start liking those Buick LeSabres.

This "GM Insider" probably heard a rumor, assumed it was about the Commodore, then blabbed to the blogs. Show of hands: How many of you think that Chevy will be announcing something about a U.S.-bound Commodore tomorrow?

If I were a betting man: Next-gen Malibu or even Impala. They're both up for replacement very soon, but Impala's already pretty much doomed to another large FWD platform - so I say Malibu.

I don't know why they don't just hit the market right on with EIII comoddores?!

This car is one good piece from GM -regardless of which GM brand it carried, and serious I don't see a good competitor among American auto industry, and it and has obvious market segment.

The G8 is already outwith pontiac brand for 2 years now ...why waste another 2 or 3 years?!

I can't really diss the Malibu having driven too many of them from Rental Car Agencies. It's an excellent family type car especially for the starter family on a tight budget. Its been talked about for a while that the Commodore would be making a return as the Chevrolet Lumina. I was right about making the call the Caprice would be coming back to the States just rather stupid it's not available to the public. I would have taken that over the G8 for a bigger and better family car. I would like to see more of the Holden line come over.

I'm looking forward to being able to get another car like the G8. This thing is awesome. I know there is a market for it. It's not like it gets bad gas mileage, even with having the v8. That's what a 6 spd auto and high gear ratio will do for you. 26mpg on the hwy is unbelievable. I'm sure they'll add the 6 spd manual as an option when it finally does happen.

Police only an only 13 or so made it into public hands because if a technicality. Chevrolet said they have fixed this issue and from here on out it's police agency only. They are detective models only so far in the states but the cruiser model should be here real soon.

Here's the thing though, the public can get a hold of Police Fleet Vehicles. If you work for certain companies you're automatically credited ''stock'' because of their use of fleet vehicles from such providers of Ford and GM and or so on. This allows you to access Fleet Stock and purchase Fleet Vehicles for your own use because of the company you work for. Like I working for U-Haul allowed me access to purchase Ford and GM Fleet Vehicles if I wished this would include Police Interceptors. If you purchased normal vehicles you got the X-Plan.

From my understanding they're 100% off limits to J.Q. Public. I wish I still worked at U-Haul I would have gotten my paperwork and sent an inquiry as to if I can purchase a Caprice. And yes it is factual, you just had to have certain paperwork to present to the fleet managers for purchasing vehicles when I worked for U-Haul.

Not only that, but new and almost-new police cars get sold if they get damaged during shipping: for example, a car is driven off the truck and scrapes up its back bumper. Even if there's nothing really wrong with the car, the bumper will get fixed and then the car sold off with no miles on it (not sure if that only happens if the customer complains or not?). A number of agencies in the U.S. carry "new" police cars for sale to anyone, even the general public. So, it won't take long for new Caprices to end up in public hands.

Hey I've seen the new caprice in some photos from a dealership and there is no way in this world i would by one. GM has changed the grill to accomadate the bow tie and also changed the hoods on them as well. The only way i would buy on of these cars is if they let holden do the dang bodystyling of the car and for gm to leave it the hell alone. oh yea, and if i'm not mistaken the actual new caprice's are longer than the G8'S. GM and the LA County Sherriffs Dept. were working together on this car specifically for PPV use. LACSD is the only law enforcement division in the US to certify a vehicle or a tire for PPV use. Learned that in a Bridgeston/Firestone training class online through their(BS/FS) TIRESTARZ program. Had to know that before I could sell the Firehawk GT Pursuit Tires to local and state police agencies.

to date, gm has no CREDIBLE replacement for the g8 in the pipeline. the proposed SS is nothing more than that.....'proposed.' as g8's are now increasing in mileage and running out of warranty, buyers will be looking for an attractive and higher performing rear drive replacement in the 1-2 year window. gm has nothing that will be here in that time frame. meanwhile, chrysler is marching on with more powerful restyled chargers and 300c, and gm will have lost thousands of buyers to dodge, and late to the party .........again.

wake up gm...you were able to bring someone like me back from nissan and toyota with the g8, now with no replacement in sight, by the time my warranty runs out, my new car $$ could be going into the pockets of infiniti or chrysler. if you want customer loyalty, give the masses what they are asking for. this is as simple as it gets in marketing 101.

Looks ok but kind of bland-ish. The G8 has that look too, a bit of "every car". Like the new Mazda 6. B-b-b-boring. The previous generation looked better. Dodge/Chrysler at least makes attractive or distinctive looking vehicles regardless of how good they are besides.

And in the age of so many new and everyday cars having so many creature comforts and luxuries (trickle down is lovely) the G8 is seeming a bit bland and boring. It's nice and big inside-and I can get a speeding ticket easily. That, I don't need anymore.

Surely it would be better to privately import a Middle Eastern Caprice SS or Royale rather than pay $100k for a stripper Caprice?

The Caprice's headlamps are conventional incandescent with low-beam projectors, and would not fit a Commodore. In Australia the stock Caprice parkers are blue-tinted incandescent with the main beam a "bi-xenon" projector with auto-levelling & washers, plus incandescent high beam.

Cheers.
