: Underdrive Pulley Install
Dr. Dana Miller 07-25-2008, 09:00 PM I just had my dealer install my Powerbond underdrive pulley yesterday. When I dropped the car off at 7 A.M. ( I did make an appointment prior ) I told them that I would wait for the car while the work was being performed. The porter pulled the car out of the write-up area and directly into the service garage as I watched. Within 5 minutes I see a technician begin to work on the car. Satisfied that no would-be "test pilots" would be driving the car I walked over to a local restaurant to grab some breakfast while I waited. Upon returning I see the tech still diligently working away. After waiting patiently for an additional hour I break the rules of the dealership and walk directly up to the tech and ask him how it is coming along. He tells me that it is going O.K. and he will be finished with it in another half an hour! I ask him why it is taking so long and he proceeds to show me a print-out of the factory recommended procedure which includes removal of the radiator, starter (???) , belts and finally the balancer. Book time for this job is 2.5 hours!! This is what I get for not asking what the book time/procedure for this operation was before bringing it to them. Could have/should have just borrowed the right puller and done the job myself. I'm not criticizing the dealer, as i've been very happy with them in all of my dealings with them and their work has always been very good, but any of you who have given thought to taking your car to the dealer for this install would be well advised to make note of this before hand so there are no surprises. Expensive install!!
GRRRR8 07-25-2008, 09:12 PM They go by factory published times and procedures. Not me! I spent more time sweating and smoking cigarettes then I did working on it, seems to be that way on everything I do on that car! LOL Well, do you like it?
Mike P 07-25-2008, 11:15 PM I still need to get this underdrive pulley installed on my car.....
..
SteveXKR 07-26-2008, 12:04 AM yeah I took it to the dealership too for an oil change, tire rotation + pulley install and it took from 7:30ish to.. oh.. 11:00/11:30? WAY longer.. at least it's in but I've GOT to find a shop locally to do this kind of work

Hi Charlie:
I noticed that the motor seems to pull just slightly better over 5K. Nothing dramatic of course, but a slight improvement. Hopefully it will give a slight improvement in M.P.G. as well.
GRRRR8 07-26-2008, 09:34 AM It will. I see KOOKS came out with the shorties and hi flow cats for you! There goes my crown! lol

Charlie: The minute you install the ARH's your crown will be in no danger of changing locations. I really don't think it was in any peril anyway. Contact Kirk @ Vector about their new cams coming out in the very near future. One will allow AFM to stay intact and give 6600 RPM shift points. Could 12.0's or maybe 11.90's be too far behind? With 12.70's as a starting point, converter w/ tires worth maybe .3 seconds, headers worth .2 sec. , a cam worth at least 30 rwhp..... the math works.
GRRRR8 07-27-2008, 10:44 AM Oh, I think I can hit high 11s with no cam! :)
Dr. Dana Miller 07-27-2008, 04:22 PM Oh, I think I can hit high 11s with no cam! :)
In street trim with no power adder??
GRRRR8 07-27-2008, 05:55 PM Yes Sir! Torque converter - .4 headers and tune -.3 Cooler weather -.2 = 11.80..... Hopefully! I will be happy if I can get an 11.99 with the stock motor/cam/heads. If not cam will do it for sure.

Yeah, with only flagging 100 hrs a week most weeks for the past 10 years I have to figure something out. :)
G8 Ray 07-28-2008, 05:27 AM No wonder I didn't see this thread. Dana had 2 cylinders removed from his V8.
Dr. Dana Miller 07-28-2008, 09:06 AM Your math certainly works, Charlie, but I'm not entirely sure that there's going to be .4 sec. in the converter, depending on which one you decide to go with. I'll be the last one to argue that it can't happen, however. If I can run 12.1's without a cam swap I will be doing back flips in the pits!! Keep us posted. I'm pulling for you all the way!!
GRRRR8 07-28-2008, 10:22 AM I you pick up .10 in the 60ft its .15 on the big end. .4 is a little high I admit, but then with a 10in Drag radial not such a big number! I will be doing back flips if it runs under 12.20 stock! :)
cobrakiller 07-29-2008, 10:15 AM do u have to tune car with the pully installed
no... tunes are only needed when airflow within the motor is affected... the greater the change in airflow (like a cam) the greater the need for a tune.
foreosu 07-29-2008, 10:43 AM Ignorant question... what the heck does an underdrive pulley do? What are the benefits?
GRRRR8 07-29-2008, 10:46 AM Reduces parasitic drag and weight on crankshaft. The alt stops sounding like a Vortech blower also!

Which means the engine is allowed to produce more HP due to the reduction of drag.:)
GRRRR8 07-29-2008, 11:06 AM Yeah, What he said!
