Move over Nascar! Here come the Aussie V8s

Speculation is firming that V8 Supercars will burn fuel in United States’ famous oil state of Texas.
Australia’s V8 Supercar series is heading for the land of 10-gallon hats and JR Ewing.

The local touring car championship is believed to be on the verge of announcing it will race in Texas – the US state made famous by the 1980s television oil drama Dallas.

The Holden and Ford teams will race at an all-new race track in Texas’s capital, Austin, called the Circuit of the Americas. The venue is already confirmed as the stage for a Formula One
United States Grand Prix from 2012 and a round of MotoGP bike races from 2013.

V8 Supercars boss Tony Cochrane has made no secret of his desire to expand the series’ appeal beyond Australia. In recent years there have been rounds held in the Middle East and China, in addition to closer neighbour New Zealand.

V8 Supercars spokesman Cole Hitchcock said the US race was “all speculation at this stage” but admitted some new venues were closer to being confirmed than others.
“We’ve been talking to a number of venues and circuits all around the world, for the best part of 18 months,” says Hitchcock. “Some of those arrangements are closer [to being confirmed] than others. These things are difficult to negotiate; but sometimes things can move quickly, sometimes they can move slowly
“Tony [Cochrane] has said anywhere east of Turkey is a potential destination. Now our international status has been confirmed by the FIA, there could be up to five or six overseas races each year, certainly something without alienating the Australian V8 fans and not eliminating any of our Australian races.
“There are circuits all over the middle east, sub-continent, Asia and US who are all looking at us and talking about potentially running us. Obviously as a one-off - we’re not going to challenge the likes of Nascar.”

The FIA has approved expansion of the V8 Supercars championship to 18 races by 2013, with up to six of those to be held at international venues.
The 5.5km-long Circuit of the Americas is a purpose-built grand prix track in the US. F1 races in the US have typically been held on converted courses, such as the Detroit street circuit in the 1990s and, most recently up to 2007, the country’s famous Indianapolis speedway – which combined parts of the high-speed oval with a twisting infield section.

The venue’s owners say the track is “designed for any and all classes of racing”.

Motorsport series outside of the US, including F1, have struggled to appeal to US fans who are typically devoted to homegrown oval racing-based championships – notably Nascar.
The Holden brand will also be unfamiliar to Americans, though many will recognise the Commodore that was sold as the Pontiac G8 in the US in recent years before the latter brand was axed as part of General Motors’ bid to stave off Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Commodore is also expected to be sold in the United States as a Chevrolet from as early as 2013.

V8 Supercars in Texas?! So jealous! Bring your state closer to mine.

Edit: you're in NY, push mine farther away!

This would be a great reason to have a national meet in Texas in 2013!

I would fly to Texas to see this race. :turbonaughtdy_1: Even though I'm "just a yankee".

All that needs to be done to make that happen is for somebody to take the reigns.

Any takers?

Its quite a long drive for me but how cool would it be to say to the person next to you that I have one of those in my driveway. Or in the parking lot outside.

So I may have missed the first thread about F1 coming to Austin, but I did make mention of the Aussie V8s coming over here!

http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33904

Either way, I want to go to the first F1 race, I want to go to the first MotoGP race, and I REALLY, REALLY want to go to the first V8 supercar race, if it happens!!

YESSSS!!! This is some great news...I've been following the V8 Supercars on Speed whenever it's on, and it's a great series. Lots of drama, talent, and best of all, the G8. Hope the people that have been working on could work something out to have the meet in Austin...that would be a great marketing ploy for the series leadership to have the US version of their cars in attendance, especially if Ford were to bring over the Falcon for US consumption by then.

No idea what I'm going to be up to in 2 years but I'm a huge race fan and would definitely look into road tripping from NY down to Texas for this, I have really wanted to see the V8 Supercars in person. I'm sure someone will plan some kind of G8 meetup around the event too.

i cant imagine the community building a huge
track with all the amenities, and ONLY have
f1 racing. i think they'll try and lure all the big
championship points series to the track, and
really hoping all of them sign on for a few years
at least. would LOVE to see some live moto gp!

The deal is done. It's a 5 year deal with 2 races a year.

Hmm.... Should set up a monster G8 meet there for the race. Pedders is located in Texas and if it isn't to far away, it would be cool to have a Pedders Day up there. Pedders is a huge sponsor, so I would imagine something could be made to work.

I'm thinking about flying back to the states to see this if I don't goto Aus to see it first. I had a trip lined up this year to see Bathurst before other plans trumped it. Been a huge fan of the V8's for years, I need to see one before they goto the COF.

Austin is a GREAT town. Very quirky, in fact, there is a billboard on the way into town that reads "Keep Austin Weird!". The food is great, the weather is awesome, and there are a lot of college kids with piercings and interesting tattoos to look at. We should hit the race, then roll over to 6th street for some libations and aforementioned people watching. I am IN on this one depending on the dates.

Come on Zep, "Fly down"??? Who's going to lead the road trip?

A road trip consisting of G8's sounds like a lot of fun. I watched the Capital City G8's roll into Carlisle this past weekend and it was impressive. Great job guys.

I'll make the trip.

This is freak'n awesome. I've actually been sending emails to V8SC for years that they should race here in the US. There's so many great tracks, like Laguna Seca in CA, Sebring in FL and Road America in WI. I've been watching V8SC since 1999, and it's really evolved from then. My personal believe is that it really is one of the best racing series in the world. It's a true battle between 2/3 of American engineering. A G8 may be a rebadged Commodore, but it's got the heart of GM. I can't wait to hear if whether or not Cochron does seal a deal here in the US. I would gladly drive down to TX just to see that weekend...watch the qualifying, top-10 shoot out, and the races for the entire weekend. If they could secure 3 races here in the US and then 3-4 in Europe, it would allow their franchise to grow.

LOL -- I guess you're right!!

I have really been working on the wife to try and let me attend the g8gone.com event this year (I'm registered) but we already have other "family" commitments around that time of the year... :slap:

I've driven to Charlotte a number of times, and ridden in the back of the family truckster to Florida when I was just a young lad, but never gone to Texas unless it was by plane. It's gotta be a 15-20 hour drive from where we are, ESK... don't you think?

Gotta save up all those "brownie points" so that I can maybe go...

I have to agree, a DFW G8 road trip down to the race would be awesome. To have as many G8's as we can on the highway cruising down there would be too cool, and the race should be incredible too. I just found out about this series coming to Austin over the weekend and am totally pumped!
