I'm getting confused on what I need to look for concerning speaker sizes. I know that the size in the front and rear doors are the same and they're 6.5". But I'm trying to figure out what that means.

Here's where I'm getting confused. Some people seem to be putting in a standard 6.5" speaker and others are using what is considered a true 6.5" speaker. The difference being that the standard is using the mount or frame as the 6.5" dimensional reference and the true 6.5" uses the actual woofer size as the dimensional reference and then the mount ends up being closer to 6.75".

For example: JL Audio VR650-CXi is a true 6.5" speaker where the woofer measures 6.5" and the mount or frame is actually 6.75".
The JL Audio VR600-CXi is considered a 6.5" speaker, but the woofer size is actually only 6" and the mount or frame is 6.5".

What do I need to look for here? Something that fits in a 6.5" opening or something larger that can fit in a 6.75" opening?

Also, what about mounting depth? Based on what Crutchfield is saying, I see that some speakers don't fit, but their slim fit counterparts do. I also see that some two ways don't fit, but their component systems will (obviously the tweeter is separate).

EDIT: Just to clear these two points up, according to Crutchfield again, the Polk db651s fit in the rear doors only, but the db651 doesn't fit in the front or the rear. The JL VR600-CSi (component system with separate tweeter) fits, but the JL VR600-CXi (built in tweeter) doesn't fit in either location.

Just looking for some insight here from all you forum members who have already swapped out your speakers.

651's fit,its just that the stockers are 2 way in the rear and 1 way in front-2 ways are fine in all doors and most 6.75 will fit as well.if crutchfield says no fit,do not get em unless members have tried and succeeded.there are alot of threads with this stuff...search is your friend

Kappa's with mounting brackets= no problem! Crutchfield says no. Reality, it was a piece of cake.:popcorn2:

That's what I was looking for. Without tearing it apart myself and measuring everything I had no way of knowing what would fit. I knew that you, GT-610, had installed the Polks in both the front and rear, but I didn't know if they were the db651 or the slimmer db651s.

And I knew that you, inTIMidator, had installed the Infinity Kappa 62.7's.

Telling me that the regular Polk db651 fits means the tweeter and mounting depth isn't an issue. Telling me the Infinity Kappa 62.7's with mounting brackets fit tells me that the opening is actually 6.75" and a true 6.5" speaker should fit. (with a few exceptions I'm sure)

Exactly what I wanted to know. I had tried searching and seeing what people were installing and then looking at Crutchfield (they're usually fairly good at telling you what fits and what doesn't, but not 100% accurate all the time). And I didn't know who was installing brackets, who wasn't, etc. That's where I started to get confused because I was getting contradictory information.

GT-610, out of curiosity, did you end up using the mounting brackets for the Polks? If you did that would pretty much confirm the openings are 6.75".

Thanks again!!!

Only bummer was no wiring adapters from Crutchfield, had to do the old school cut and splice.

Some 6.5's will not fit the factory mounting brackets;however, new ones can be made easily. Look in the DIY Tech section at my article that is entitled door panel removal/speaker installation. Should help you out and the pics will give you an idea of what you are working with.

My speakers did not fit, they would not fit all the way down in the factory mounting brackets. I was just making a suggestion if for some reason he purchased some speakers that did not fit properly.
