I'm getting confused on what I need to look for concerning speaker sizes. I know that the size in the front and rear doors are the same and they're 6.5". But I'm trying to figure out what that means.
Here's where I'm getting confused. Some people seem to be putting in a standard 6.5" speaker and others are using what is considered a true 6.5" speaker. The difference being that the standard is using the mount or frame as the 6.5" dimensional reference and the true 6.5" uses the actual woofer size as the dimensional reference and then the mount ends up being closer to 6.75".
For example: JL Audio VR650-CXi is a true 6.5" speaker where the woofer measures 6.5" and the mount or frame is actually 6.75".
The JL Audio VR600-CXi is considered a 6.5" speaker, but the woofer size is actually only 6" and the mount or frame is 6.5".
What do I need to look for here? Something that fits in a 6.5" opening or something larger that can fit in a 6.75" opening?
Also, what about mounting depth? Based on what Crutchfield is saying, I see that some speakers don't fit, but their slim fit counterparts do. I also see that some two ways don't fit, but their component systems will (obviously the tweeter is separate).
EDIT: Just to clear these two points up, according to Crutchfield again, the Polk db651s fit in the rear doors only, but the db651 doesn't fit in the front or the rear. The JL VR600-CSi (component system with separate tweeter) fits, but the JL VR600-CXi (built in tweeter) doesn't fit in either location.
Just looking for some insight here from all you forum members who have already swapped out your speakers.
