So from what I'm reading, AFM (DOD) will not be used for the 6 speed manual versions of the G8. My first question is Why? Also, if this is true, then the L98 sounds more like what the engine will be. From Wikipedia:

L98
For the tuned-port Generation I engine of the same RPO, see Chevrolet L98
The L98 is a slightly modified version of the L76, devoid of some redundant hardware relating to displacement on demand. Power increased to 362 hp (270 kW) at 5700 rpm and 391 ft·lbf (530 Nm) at 4400 rpm.

Applications:

2006-2007 Holden VE Commodore
2006-2007 Holden WM Statesman / Holden WM Caprice
2007-2008 Chevrolet Lumina SS
2007-2008 Chevrolet Caprice SS

I'm just wondering what the differences will be in the engine if auto G8's have AFM and manual G8's do not have it. I don't understand what "redundant hardware" is. Anybody?

Using the L98 would make sense if they don't want AFM with the M6. The AFM uses some hydraulics to collapse lifters enough that valves don't open, I think. They can put the normal lifters in and leave out anything else that changed with the AFM.

+1.

The l76 and l98 are exactly the same except for the AFM related hardware.
