: Silencing the Atari gauges…Revisited
EC-Ryder 08-14-2008, 12:55 PM This maybe my easiest mod so far, and since I’m mechanically challenged I thought I’d post pics of the offending wire and panels that U can remove to silence them if U wish to do so like I did, and other force members before me.
For premium sound system, this only takes a few minutes with no expense, other than a few minutes worth of time and no other consequences have I encountered in the 3-4 months or there about I’ve had them disconnected.
Pic1 shows the left driver’s side panel in back of radio\front consol. They simply snap down and off, bottom panel comes off first, then the upper.
Pic2 shows the offending wire U simply disconnect and presto! No more Atari!
To re-install reverse procedure top panel snaps in first…
You may now put XM, I pod GPS or whatever, in front of them and have a more OE look to them with the bracket I mentioned in my recent GPS mount post, or just drive darker without them. All of the info on them maybe redundant If not useless via dash light, and\or engineering mode.
Have a quieter, darker, happier motoring with the force!
P.S.
My thanks again to bigdaddyg8 who inspired me on his post to send them (the Atari) to the darkest side…
Cheers!
wreckwriter 08-14-2008, 12:56 PM Now if someone would just come up with a way to dim them instead of disconnecting 2 critical pieces of info....
EC-Ryder 08-14-2008, 01:06 PM They are not very accurate to be of any REAL benefit to the serious player, or for every day use for that matter.
But U could splice a rheostat switch if U really wanted them there.
Moreover if GM decided they weren't really useful for the 'o9's...
P.S.
I'm keeping (saving) mine from burnout for future memorabilia value 20yrs from now LOL!
But that's just me!
Cheers!
wreckwriter 08-14-2008, 01:07 PM GM dropped them due to overwhelming complaints I expect, not due to usefulness or lack thereof.
EC-Ryder 08-14-2008, 01:38 PM One of the problems I noticed was that under certain idling condition particularly on very hot days, the oil pressure would show real low, an alarm to the casual user, but of no concern at all and quite normal. Hence I believe the general saw real future complaints coming their way…I know they’ve heard them all too often before.
I would trust my ears (and my big butt) more to tell me the truth as I would hear an abnormal knock and shake from the engine more than the Atari gauges.
Same for the volt gauge, I’ve had most OE show well when there was actually a concerned with the charging system.
They are worth nothing to me for now…But to each their own…
It’s all good!
Zaphod B 08-14-2008, 02:11 PM I do like having an oil pressure gauge. Even if its off by as much as 15%, at least it's there to tell you when you have no pressure at all.
But I agree with wreckwriter - I just wish there were some way to dim the damned thing. It's way too bright at night. I'm thinking maybe some transparent smoked film?

If only I could find some. I thought it would be easy but hasn't proven so. Tint film is nit a good option because you can't get in there to work out bubbles.
Zaphod B 08-14-2008, 02:13 PM But U could splice a rheostat switch if U really wanted them there.
It that input signal a DC voltage similar to what a regular analog gauge would use?
roSSco 08-14-2008, 02:38 PM I can't figure out what I am seeing in pic 1.

Me either. :drink:
TomPierce 08-14-2008, 05:24 PM Me either. :drink:
Pic 1 is the vertical panel next to your right knee when you are sitting in the driver seat. It is the side panel of the console 'stack'.
Here is a much better picture with it taken off and the long panel below it as well.

Me too, if they just a bit less bright at night I'd be perfectly happy.

Could some sort of tint be applied somehow?? I think it's too bright also.
appletonrc 08-14-2008, 09:48 PM Window tint is a common fix. I haven't tried it yet, but I think that is the path I'll go.
wreckwriter 08-14-2008, 09:48 PM How you plan to get in there to work the bubbles out?
SRG963 08-15-2008, 05:43 AM How you plan to get in there to work the bubbles out?
Just buy some transparent plastic (color of your choice, mines blue) and cut to fit. You can still see the info, just not as bright!

So far unable to find any other than clear.

Try an office supply store for plastic report covers
wreckwriter 08-15-2008, 07:11 AM Try an office supply store for plastic report covers
My local Office Depot has about 50,000 covers, every one clear. I will keep looking but I expected these things to be common, hasn't proven so yet.
jcbeckman 08-15-2008, 07:53 AM Why don't you put the tint on a piece of clear plastic? That way you can take out the bubbles then fit the plastic in place.

Now that's a thought. Thanks!

I started this thread to help those of us who want to place more useful items in that space than those F*#kers.
It that input signal a DC voltage similar to what a regular analog gauge would use?
Don’t know, don’t care, Don't give a rat's A$$, OHOooo!
I just want the F*@kers out of my view…I’ve provided easy enough guide to get to it, and knock your self out with your own mod.
Moreover, if you screw them up with the rheostat You'll be better of without them and you will be part of my gang by force! OHOoo!
I can't figure out what I am seeing in pic 1.
Me either. :drink:
The instruction is easy enough for the ones with necessary skills to get the job done. If u cannot figure it out you have no business fooling around with this mod.
Did I answer all the questions?
BTW…Sorry about the delay, I had forgot about this thread LOL!
Now move on to another party!
Cheers!

:ftw::worthless:
Ya’ll need start your own thread! :banghead:
This is about eliminating those useless F*@ks and for those of us who want something more useful like the dashhawk, GPS, satellite, I pod or whatever fits your pie hole and makes U smile. Heck a compartment to put your sunglasses would be more useful for us with sun roofs than those F*@kers.
But that’s just me!
Cheers!
wreckwriter 08-19-2008, 10:17 AM Did you take too many rude pills this morning?
roSSco 08-19-2008, 10:21 AM I'm thinking of this. Has anyone measured the dimensions?

EC-Ryder 08-19-2008, 04:05 PM Did you take too many rude pills this morning?
But I didn’t wake up with a smile this morning on account of that two bit harlot named Fay, who is giving every body a blow J@* all up end down the southeast and thinks she can come back to me, but now I don’t want her to give me the gift that keeps on giving! OHOoHOo!

Now there’s a more useful item...Unfortunately, it must be trying to tune-in to Oz land as I usually prefer listening to my locals, the rare times when I even listen.
The G8 seems to have the poorest, lousiest radio antenna reception of any vehicle I had for as far back as I can remember. LOL!
But that's just me!
Cheers!
