I realy want the 6 speed manual, but any body break the 6 speed auto yet. I wonder how much power has been put through it already. What other car is the new 6 speed in?

My Corvette ( 2007, with this trans. ) required a "solenoid pack" replacement at ~ 12,000 miles. It is stock ( 400\400) and never abused....

Not real sure, but a lot of the A6 Corvette guys say that 500whp is about as far as you want to go before you start having problems. I guess we won't know until we try. I'm planning on pushing it right off the bat, so hopefully it will hold up.

The 6L80 can withhold an awesome 650ftq:

A GM Representative at Carlisle, in 2006, while answering questions about the A6 (6L80) transmission, reportedly said, "The A6 was designed to withstand the 650 lb. ft. of torque of the Duramax Diesel, and they had tried to break the A6 transmission, with no success." His final words were, "You don't have to worry about the C6!"

Saw this post from a while back....have had mixed feedback on the A6's...from great to troublesome...but you generally hear 100% of the problem ones, and 10% of the no trouble ones. There are guys running flat 12's in A6 VE's with no problems. Also twin turbo packages. The auto generally gives a 60' time that is hard to beat.

Maybe my post will stir up some '08 feeback on the subject...?

Cheers.

Actually, the STS-V uses this tranny (6L80). The CTS-V will be using the 6L90. I wonder if this has the same case with uprated clutches/etc. or if it is a completely different transmission. I have to believe that the 6L80 is pretty stout. It has been GM's solution for towing apps. There may be a few that break, but that would most likely be from defective parts and not a defective design.

6L90 is the same trans with a longer case...maybe 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" longer - both case and pan. Thicker gears/more clutch plates for higher torque/power capacity. ~75% of the parts are the same from 6L80 to 6L90. Not sure whether that 75% means by weight, quantity, cost or what.

Cheers.

Okay.. You spent around $60-70g's on a Vett, and they give you a Malibu for a rental?? What's wrong with this picture :eek2:

Trying to hit a median price... Regular Vett's are starting at close to $50gs and the Z06's close to $80gs. I thought the Z06's had an automatic option. Obviously I was wrong about that..

But still you can get a "base" regular '08 Vett that Sticker's for $50g's with A6 or one that's optioned out for $68g's

Although this may be a bit off topic here, I think the relevance is that the trans in the G8 GT does have the same designation as the Corvette’s. And there have been instances reported that were similar to mine. Not a huge #.

My hope is that they have addressed the issues in the G8 GT.

As well as improving a few aspects of the Corvette’s trans. behavior that I find less than 100% satisfying.

And, regarding Corvette prices - FWIW:
The ‘base’ Corvette coupe now starts at about $47K.
As I recall ( without the paperwork in front of me )
mine had an MSRP of just over $50K – with a moderate options load:
A6, top option group [ 3LT ], clear top, metallic paint – but no Nav & no Z51 or F55 suspension, & no chrome wheels.

I paid approx $47. – a year and a half ago, from a local dealer.

Actual prices have fallen further since.
The largest Corvette dealer in the country . .

http://www.kerbeck.com/

http://www.kerbeck.com/kerbeck/kerbeck.nsf/corvette_special_offers

. . currently has an interesting ad, w/prices.
Their reputation is very good – and these prices are “real”.
Assuming that you do not have a trade.
So – with purchase of a $100 to $150 plane ticket, anyone in the US can buy a ‘base’ 2008 Corvette, with a reasonable selection of options, for less than $45K – and a ‘stripper’ for less than that.

A Coupe, with the 3LT option package, like mine, with MSRP of say $51 - 52K would now sell for roughly $44 - $45K.
And a completely loaded Coupe looks like MSRP around $63K – and could be purchased for $56-ish. That is with Nav, a more luxurious interior [ 4LT ] & much more expensive option group than was available when I bought mine, chrome wheels, dual roofs & the A6.

Similarly equipped ‘vert would run more, of course . . .

The Z06’s actual transaction prices
( base MSRP more than a ‘vert )
are much more.
It is not available with an automatic –
Z06s are not typically discounted nearly as much as the ‘base’ Corvettes.

Waited as long as I could wait before pulling the trigger on the Corvette . . .

GM thinks everyone in the good ol' USA that wants a true sportscar should have one available to them. Vettes sell for triple our price in other countries.

AFAIK, GM makes little to no profit on domestic sales of bare base Corvettes. They make some money on Z packages and options but dealers get them for very little.
