I want to know what cameras you guys use that show the actual track layout, speed, g's, lap times, etc in the video.

I have a good HD camera that the wife uses, but i want a camera to mount in or on the car that shows all this information.

What are you guys using, how much was it, and where did you get it from?

If you have a smart phone the Torque application has this ability. I just bought it picked up the OBDII bluetooth unit it needs. I haven't had time to take it to the track but so far it looks pretty sweet. The video would only be as good as the camera on the smart phone though. Cost $25 total.

Is this a actual camera and everything, or just some software thing?

I think Vegas meant Harry's Lap timer...

It's software that runs on the iPhone (and I think Android).. That's what I used on my vids in that VIR thread. It works well, but the GPS unit in the iPhone is a little too slow for my tastes....

Basically, you record video with the iPhone while running Harry's application. It gathers the GPS info and overlays the video with the data right there on the phone. It is a really nice application.

I want to know what Eidolon used to get his data and record with and where it was positioned.

BTW, nice Avatar pic! ;)

Right now you can get the Flip brand HD camcorders really cheap. Like 39 bucks cheap. Then you could get a Qstarz GPS receiver to log the laps. Make sure it's a 5Mhz receiver so it can handle the speeds.

I think from there you can get software to overlay the data onto your video.

Might be cheaper to get a smartphone! ;)

I am running Harry's Laptimer on my iTouch 4g with the UltiMate GPS unit.. It passes 5 mHz GPS data to the Touch and it's gyros and accelerometers fill in the blanks nicely. Adding OBD2 data is possible but for the cost I don't need the rpm's displayed.

When I run two cameras in the car you can use a program called RaceRender2 to make it PIP. It can even combine multiple camera and data feeds into one display. And as long as your video is less than three minutes use of the program is free.

I have a bunch of GoPro HD cameras and a Race Technologies DL1 Data Logger (http://www.race-technology.com/dl1_8_936.html). I generate the overlays from the logged data and then use Final Cut Pro to combine all the video and make the final videos.

Pros: Data logger is extremely accurate and can be integrated with the OBDII/CAN and other aftermarket sensors to log vehicle data as well as GPS/G-Forces. Because the cameras are self-contained I can position them in multiple locations (without rewiring). I can also use the video cameras by themselves and not have to deal with the data logger.

Cons: The data logger is not cheap. It takes a bunch of manual steps to create the finished product because the video and data are separate.

Other products that I've heard of are:
Video VBOX (http://vboxusa.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3&zenid=41dfd70fa075d2cfe903ba48b44437ad)

OK, so if I am understanding this right.... I can use any HD camera? Then the data logger system is what overlays onto the video?

If that is the case, how hard is it to sync the video and the data?

It seems like some of these systems mentioned actually work with each other (integrated)?

That would be awesome if I could use my camera already (Sony HDR-SR1).

How do you like your gopros?

I have been hearing a lot of negative feedback from users..... They say they are getting error codes when they go to record, or it won't record at all. Then they say the tech/site support is terrible.

Correct, that is one way to do it. There are also data loggers with integrated video cameras, but they are not cheap. You are also "stuck" with something that only works in the car.

If that is the case, how hard is it to sync the video and the data?
I sync my multiple video streams together with a horn honk. I then watch the video to see the frame where I start to accelerate and match that to the data (change in speed). It's not too difficult, but it's not an automated process.

Most data loggers these days have the ability of generating video gauges (but may charge for Third-party or HD video). There are also quite a few aftermarket programs that can also do it.

If you're only goal is to make pretty videos, that's great... if you want to have the video alongside the data (within the native data logging software) it becomes a little more restrictive.

How do you like your gopros?
I've had zero issues with any of my GoPro HD Hero cameras. I have no experience with the new GoPro HD Hero2. My favorite thing about the GoPro is that I can easily mount the cameras anywhere I want... in any weather... on any vehicle...

I would highly recommend going this route, buying a purpose built setup is extravagant for the rookie level.

What editing suite do you use? I've used Vegas for years upon years and it's the best entry level video editor I've ever come across. It's EXTREMELY good for simple edits and doing all of the cutting & placing work- though for effects it leaves much desired as other programs to that better.
